I’m not a Sunflower shipper at all, but I definitely think that Sunny grew up admiring his friends to the point of small crushes. The only thing that takes away from it is the fact that Sunny didn’t get to experience puberty like a normal child, he never left his house or talked to other teenagers. Sunny would need to learn stuff after the story of the game, so I can’t see him being in a good relationship with anyone until he finds stuff out about himself. (The ramblings of a gay guy who has gone through this exact thing in the past)

So Basil being killed would represent the corruption of the innocent person he was before or the damage it did to him mentally, and the guilt shows because Omori leads Basil to all of the deaths or directly causes it by some action

Basil is the one that carries the truth to Mari's death. That's why he is always erased from headspace. And still Omori tries to get him back every time, and every time is forced to reset headspace, but he refuses to reset it without Basil, hoping that someday he will stop reminding him of the trauma and they will live there peacefully. Thinking that Sunny/Omori hates Basil is literally not getting the headspace as a whole. He is literally the reason of the adventure.

their relationship is so interesting. i always figured that they never exactly _hated_ each other, they just...didnt really know how to feel for a very long time because trauma kind of ruins relationships. or at the very least, REALLY complicates them. because, like. youve got these positive memories, that make you feel so happy and fuzzy, and at the same time youve got these negative memories, that make you feel sick and sad and angry and fearful. you want to be around this person because you love them _so_ much, but youre afraid to because theyre directly tied to something that makes you feel _so_ horrible. its very frustrating because its tainted, and a small part of you may even hate them for it, but you cant erase the good times and the bonding you had with this person. you cant get rid of how much they mean to you. so now youre just stuck in a weird teeter totter state of not knowing how to feel. not knowing whether you should reach out or stay away. not knowing what you actually want. its pretty much the same with sunny and mari, actually. he still keeps her around in headspace because he loves her so much, even though she torments him on a daily basis.

It allows Sunny to keep her just as he wants, or at least try to keep her as he wants, just as he does with Basil, maybe trying to reconcile with her being and stop having something after him

You can portray abusive & codependent relationships without romanticizing them. You can even ship them, in theory that just means you like seeing the characters together and interacting. It’s fiction, you’re allowed to explore things like this (think Jasper x Lapis from Steven Universe). Of course you have to be cautious of HOW you portray them so as not to romanticize something toxic, but I’m just so sick and tired of seeing this intense hesitance to even _touch_ these subjects.

@@StrongestLibrafluidAlive it’s not ever drawn attention to, but if you pay attention to the smoothie descriptions, you can see that they are not organized within the game’s healing amounts by either sunnys tastes or healthiness. However, since the one that heals the most is strawberry, and we know that Basil loves strawberries from the birthday memory, and the lowest heal is the banana smoothie, with Basil seeming less than enthusiastic about a banana popsicle in the photo album, we can ascertain that sunnys mind has organized them by Basil’s tastes. In addition, there is an NPC only accessible from two days left onward by the name of Budgirl in Vast Forest that takes the form of a pink tulip and meows when you interact with it, adding a smoothie at random (other than banana) to your inventory. Strawberry smoothies aren’t sold, so if you want one other than the two findable in the overworld or the two percent chance from fighting strawberry short snakes, this is the only way.

I thought the the whole dream auby crush and slime girls was Sunny trying to make himself seem straight, like he was trying to convince himself he couldn't possibly like Basil (or maybe even Kel) especially considering how one of the mostly featured female characters that is widely considered to be popular and attractive(sweetheart) is very annoying or even downright disgusting in behavior to Sunny/Omori. That alone feels like when your a closeted gay and a family member goes "Oh she's cute why don't you date her?" And you immediately cringe inside.

To add to the "maybe Kel" thing, one reading of Aubrey's behaviour in Headspace is that part of Sunny wants to be "rescued" from his depression, so he casts Aubrey as his Manic Pixie Dream Girl. She's endlessly supportive, she pulls him towards adventures in Headspace and Omori's complete inability to return her affections does nothing to hurt their relationship. Who ends up playing that role in the real world? Kel. It's Kel who drags him outside. It's Kel who offers unconditional love and support. It's Kel who does enough of the talking for the non-verbal Sunny (he only has one line in the entire game that is unambiguously spoken aloud by him, at the very end of the good route, and Basil's comments in the real world imply that Sunny's essentially gone mute from trauma) to start mending his friendships, forging genuine connections with the townsfolk and developing the support network that allows him to confront the truth. It's interesting from a meta perspective. And given that, as mentioned in the video, Aubrey starts coming onto him a lot stronger after Kel gets back in touch, it's easy to square that with the reading that Sunny is trying to convince himself he's straight. For the record, I don't think Kel's actions have to be read as romantic on his part, I just bring it up because a lot of men fall into the trap of associating these things with romantic relationships. Sunny might have interpreted this as romantic and been unsettled by it.

I love the analysis of sunflower specifically in this video, and debating with the people who say it's a toxic ship. Sunflower has been a huge comfort ship for me since I got into Omori. It's the fact that it is a screwed up ship that makes it comforting for me, but it's also a really wholesome ship from other angles. If I'm being real I always kinda interpreted HS Aubrey's crush on Omori as more like, "comphet" than anything. Like maybe when they were kids Sunny felt pressured into a crush on her because everyone said they looked cute together, or they incorrectly interpreted his affinity towards her as romantic attraction rather than just really admiring her as a friend. (*glares at Basil*) Even the car ride example, where he puts his head on her shoulder. When my lesbian ass was that age, I def thought I had crushes on boys just because het was the current meta lmao. I remember doing that exact same thing with one of my brother's football friends (tall 'n athletic dude, very much the kind of guy people ""anticipate"" girls liking) on a car ride when I was like, 9, long before I actually understood what romantic attraction actually was, because -- "girls like guys like this." So maybe Omori's disinterest in Aubrey's affections -- and the Letter Room sequence -- were manifestations of the stress that the prospect of "needing" to have those feelings caused Sunny. ......Not that I don't still find the ship cute. as someone who has recently been sitting in the Umineko fandom, it's actually baffling to me how people can be so against a ship just because it could be unhealthy. the three main ships here are unimaginably toxic and pairing up very traumatized people, after all, and no one even bats an eye. either way, quality video. Thank you for this! This was fun to watch! My two cents as a trans person on the whole gender swap potion: I always viewed it more as a "The girls room is a forbidden place, so what if I could ACCESS that forbidden place?" curiosity type thing. But what struck me as interesting is the girls room looks... incredibly similar to BASIL'S irl room (same hanging plants in the same locations, same strung up photos, same WALLPAPER), so to me, it felt less like a gender exploration thing, so much as a "What if I could see the girl place, and the girl place was like BASIL, because what if Basil was a girl so I could have a crush on him?" sort of vibe - like maybe he's not 100% comfortable/aware of being bisexual yet, and this is his mind's way of exploring a possibility where it feels more comfortable to have a crush on Basil. But, I can also see where people view it in more of a trans angle as well. That's the fun thing about fiction - it's open to interpretation :)

I also like your take on the killing Basil thing on Blackspace because I also see that: Omori's just trying to put a stop to Basil. IDK if somebody else picked up on this but the amount of times the gang just forget Basil (except the hikkikomori route) is meant to be reflected in the amount of Basil's dead bodies found in Blackspace. The same way the love letter cutscene is meant to show Sunny's conflictive feelings about Aubrey- The amount of times Basil has been yeeted to Blackspace and then the thing loops over and over again is meant to mean Headspace can't repress things for long especially Omori killing him again and again He's trying to get rid of the truth! he just yeeted Basil out because he mentions the truth! He can't escape it because Sunny can't stop seeing the truth in Basil! Killing Basil is meant to represent the negation of the negation of the negation of the negation! When he kills the fictional Basil in the real route it represents a stop to the masking! And killing Stranger in the Omori route is meant to represent the complete avoidance! Think about it: We kill the Stranger, rescue Basil and go to bed forever VS Kill HS Basil, face the Stranger, gain access to the truth It's more of an allegory to me since I see many of the things in Headspace as allegoric instead of idealized projections Maybe he Hates how much he Loved Basil; Maybe he's trying to get rid of the idealized Basil. Have you ever fought against violent dreams or intrusive thoughts? Cuz' that's what they look like to me: Just get rid of the bloody thing.

As someone who personally likes Sunny x Kel as much as Sunny x Basil, I was slightly hoping you would reach more into how close the two were as well - although Sunny's possible romantic feelings for Kel weren't as clear in Headspace, so I can understand why many people don't talk about it. Also, as a transmasc myself, my thoughts on the Mystery Potion handed by one of the Slime Sisters is that it's an easter egg showing an old design of Sunny that was scrapped and never used for the game. It could also be him trying to be effeminate in a way that reminds him of Mari, or how Mari used to be. I do really like the possibility of him being genderqueer and pushing the possibility down and hiding away a gender-changing potion in Headspace, as that lens is easy to see through and honourably valid.

Also, literally every relationship Sunny and Basil end up in within the group would be toxic??? They covered up a manslaughter. Even if Aubrey, Hero, and Kel forgive them and work towards being good friends again, Sunny dating Aubrey would still be hard, Sunny dating Kel would still be hard, even if Kel is the healthiest in the group. Admitting that their friend didn't kill herself and instead was killed would reopen wounds and make the mourning process so much worse and difficult. There's just no reason to argue that Suntan would be better than Sunflower.

Hey, this is a bit off topic for the video, but still, what do you think, about Suntan ship (Sunny x Kel)? I realize this is at first glance the most unlikely and most rambling spike, but listen. Suntan is the most unlikely but very healthy love match. Kel is a sloppy person (probably suffers from ADHD), but overflowing with energy and optimism to help in the most difficult situation you can have (don't forget that he saved two people with his actions) Sunny is a calm and thoughtful person, willing to listen to everything and be passionate about what his friends are passionate about (and more than friends), but he really needs someone mentally stable and warm. Sunflower ship is good too, but I'm still of the opinion that Basil would love Sunny to date someone he'd be really good with. Still, Daisy in the language of flowers symbolizes the phrase: "I'll be happy when you're happy". I'd love it if you'd pay a little attention to this ship in your brain system :3

Well, like she stated in previous video Kel and Sunny isn't as healthy as people thought. If you think Kel doesn't have massive mental health issue, you're wrong. Kel has a lot but he hides it far better than others. He mentioned about his fight with his brother and he laughed it off like it's not something serious and left him traumatized, that's not healthy. He buries all his problems The problem with them both, they ignore/hide whatever problem they have for the sake of others. And Sunny would definitely never say anything to Kel about that. They both would end up bottling their problems, and see who ends up explodes first. So yeah definitely not without trouble and baggage. Side note : Sunny has more likely chance to help if he sees someone in trouble, if not he will just ignore them.

He's the only person besides Basil who reached out to Sunny despite 4 years of radio silence, and the only one who actually got Sunny to open the door. He was willing to be vulnerable/risk rejection, if his hesitant response is any implication, and physical injury if you interpret the Hooligans' AI targeting Kel as Kel tanking punches for Sunny.

I agree that the whole killing Basil in black space thing isn’t resentment at all, I see it more as Sunny worrying about the fact that he is too scared to “save” him. In the real world when Basil is freaking out, he backs away in fear like he doesn’t know what to do and how to help, and when Basil dies in black space later on it’s almost like he feels this massive guilt weighing on his shoulders about it. And the dream Basil talking about how much he wants to be saved is like Sunny’s own mind rubbing the salt in the wound for it.

I think of Stranger as a representation of Sunny's guilt of abandoning Basil. It's why he, just like Something, is black and white, and why his name is so similar in that it implies something unknown. Headspace being centered around saving Basil again and again is Sunny trying to fulfill his desire to save Basil in real life. Something he can't do. Stranger is the one trying to push Sunny not just to accept the truth, but to save real Basil as well. Many of the things he says are what Sunny himself imagines Basil is thinking (to, possibly, a ridiculously accurate degree). He knows of the weight of the burden he left him with, he knows that Basil can't possibly handle it alone. It's ultimately what pushes Sunny to seek the truth in the main route, right before breaking the bulb and facing the Truth Sunny has a vision of Basil begging for help. That's when Sunny finally realises that he must face the Truth, or else Basil will die.

Sunny's admiration for Hero is also prevalent in the real world sections of the game. There are multiple instances where Sunny let's his true thoughts bleed through the narration when he is awed at Hero's actions. An example is in the beginning of one of the days (don't remember which one) Hero cooks breakfast for Kel and Sunny. His reaction to this is "Wow..." Which has always stood out to me because it happens several times. This combined with HS Hero, its safe to say that seeing Real Hero has not changed Sunny's high opinion of him. Although, I think deep down Sunny does actually know to some extent how Mari's death effected him, even in the hikikomori route. Hints like how Hero is depicted as the sadness emotion in the Emotion Chart. The depressed Pluto seen in Black Space 2 - it is heavily implied that Pluto and Hero are connected (Pluto acting as a mentor to HS Kel and Real Hero has a sprite where his expression is literally Pluto's). I find this one a lot funnier to the last one and a lot more made sense, because you have more depth to see how Snuuy is overtly bi due to headspace. It's all in his head, so you can't exactly say "THAT AIN'T TRUE, NUH UH," because it's right there. With Basil, it's a little more complicated because we don't see into his headspace. Either way, still like it, and find it fun. Gonna add personal experience below: As a Bi-Femboy, I have not experienced what others have and lived a completely normal life with no hatred towards me for being either of those things. Yes, I'm a white guy and I'm not trans in any way, so I can't speak on those matters all too well. The only thing I've experienced differently is SKIRTS and DRESSES. Those things are a nightmare to find in the right size, especially for a "manly man" like me lol. Other than one thing, I've lived practically a normal dude's life, as if I was never Bi or Femboy. My secret? I don't tell anyone unless I feel it's important to speak what I am to others, which is MOSTLY, not all the time, people I am actually interested in dating in any way. I don't dress feminine all the time, because I reserve that for whoever I'm actually with at the time. Anyways, I had fun watching this video, and I still enjoyed the last one, I just found this one a lot more funny and "professional." (No angi outbursts lmao.)

The mystery potion really caught me off-guard. Sunny/Omori plays it off as a joke in a way, but it is also reasonable to think that this may be traces of a desire to be female. For Sunny, a character that likely has little knowledge about trans people, he only is allowed this after completing a long and painful journey, and even then it may be a joke. Most people become confused by their own feelings and out of fear, suppress them, even if there is no transphobic influence. Sunny could indeed be transgender! Those are the last of my thoughts on this.

I'm saying this as a person who has looked into their sexuality for multiple years, dated multiple genders and has a deep love for OMORI. I agree with many points of your video, sometimes I find it hard for me to watch a full video that is over 20 minutes but your analysis pulled me into it. The one thing I have a question about is around 12:36. I think the main focal point as to why Basil is so important in the game is because, as you said in the video, their stories are intertwined. No matter what, Basil is important because he "helped" Sunny. But, you have to understand not a lot of the game was meant to be taken a certain way. The "implications" are mostly conveniences for the storyline, like when OMORI bridal carries Basil. When doing pixel art, especially on a smaller scale of the games characters, it's hard to draw a piggyback ride or perhaps any other way OMORI could have picked him up. I say this because it's easier for the developers to just draw Basil being carried by OMORI like that. Another point is 2 of Basil's locations, I think the reason as to why Sunny remembered the flower descriptions is because he has to cope with basically having no social life and no friends to connect to. His whole life before the incident was around the Faraway friend group, from what I would get from the fact he was very quiet and shy, he didn't have many other friends. He remembers the other kids in his neighborhood hence the playground area, but they aren't that important enough to get crucial information about them. I definitely agree with the fact that Sunny can't hate Basil. The multiple deaths of Basil, can represent another feeling of regret or denial. I think he wants to destroy EVERYTHING relating to the incident, so it's only natural to kill Basil in that state of mind. But "if he wanted to destroy everything why didn't he just not dream of Basil?!"... Well, Sunny still thinks of Basil as a dear friend and someone who is special to him. They were BEST FRIENDS, and even stated in the video that Sunny is comfortable in Basil's bed as well. But everything started to go downhill when Basil went missing yadayadayada. I think the "denial" was the split between Basil and Stranger, I 100% agree with the fact that Sunny doesn't want to see Basil as flawed but more of perfect because he doesn't want to remember what happened. Look, my one big thing is that Basil and Sunny ship. I had a partner who was extremely fucked up in the head, she suffered from severe trauma from when she was a kid and we started dating because she told me she had romantic attraction to me. At this time, I was so stressed out from my parents, from my whole social life and I had bouts of depression and I refused to talk to people, do work, and I neglected myself. We dated at this time because she was one of the few people I talked to and at first it was great, but it went down hill really fast. We both had really bad anxiety so we would have such bad arguments all the time. It wasn't just about cheating or other people, it was about ourselves. We were both fucked up, and remember 2 negatives don't make a positive unless you are a number. We ended our 4 year relationship because I told her that we BOTH had to get our shit together if we ever wanted to talk again. And that relationship was ended sort of recently. Around 7 months ago I found OMORI and maybe 2 months before that we broke up. I found a deep connection to OMORI not only because Sunny reminded me of himself but Basil did too. I tried my hardest to help that girl out, I had arguments FOR HER (I broke friendships with OUR friends because of her) and a lot of my mental well being was destroyed for her. Now whenever I see Basil x Sunny it reminds me of me and her. I know, we aren't the same, we aren't 2 men and we aren't connected by some deep trauma but I can't help to be unbiased towards their relationship. I find nothing wrong with shipping, when I was back in highschool I loved Shinji x Kaworu or Light x L. I was OBSESSED with them, I had posters in my room, my whole tumblr page was filled with those ships and theres NOTHING wrong with wanting 2 characters to fall in love. But I seriously just cannot find it in myself to see the queer signs here. Sure, I've had crushes on my best friends but they were straight and considering a lot of them were men, they obviously wouldn't date me. I just see Basil and Sunny as 2 friends, or at least former friends, finding themselves explore the past and embrace the present. They come to terms with what they had done, and at the end of the game, they take the steps in order to fix their mistakes. They tell their other friends what they really had done and all is done and thats that. The reason why, I just don't see them together is also the fact that Sunny moved. Sunny's move, is his way of embracing the future as well. To create a new life, to make new friends, not to forget the past, but to end an arc in his story. He is a young man, he has his whole life ahead of him and him staying in one place and relishing in the mistake he's done isn't going to help him. So, I think Basil and Sunny are together in a way where their trauma intertwined in such a vile and lamentable mistake that they both wish they couldn't do but they try to amend for it in such a short amount of time that I just can't see the relationship with them ever flourishing. If you like Sunflower, you do you. I'm just saying it the way I see it. I don't mean any hate, this is just how I feel. Great video and keep up the good work!

Good analysis! I've always felt pretty strongly that Sunny reciprocated Basil's feelings in some way since it always seemed... very much in the text. Like dude has built headspace to basically be ABOUT Basil and the echos of that attachment are etched in the fibers of the world. But there's some things I didn't notice- like the fishbowl thing, which is super interesting! We love a bisexual headspace king. I'm less sold on the whole Hero Admiration Crush thing, I get the argument but as someone who's always had A LOT of platonic admiration for friends Assigned Found Family I just. Y'know, sometimes intense feelings for someone else ARE just friendship/platonic and I find "oh if you feel this strongly/intimately about someone it MUST be romantic." kind of frustrating. I get the idea is to fight against comphet and I know this kind of thing CAN be the seeds of messy sexuality feelings, and y'know, we're mostly here to just firmly nail down Our Boy Is A Bi King. I just feel differently. Also given that Sunny spent all that time watching Hero/Mari become a thing... idk given that headspace Mari's "perfection" has been dialed up to eleven, it makes sense to me that Headspace Hero is The Best Catch to go along with her. THAT SAID I still super respect your interpretation, it's well thought out and it's a good queer analysis of a game that's absolutely dripping in queer text and subtext. It may not work for me but it's still well supported by the game itself and it's very well done. I'm not verbalizing my thoughts as an intended critique, just to be clear! Personally as a trans masc with that fact that sunny is a name that is completely androgynous but can be seen slightly feminine name of Sunny were to be trans he’s trans masc. The characters being in a small religious community I can imagine him not changing his name but still presenting masc. for example that sweater vest I personally wear them because they easily hide one’s chest and of course there’s his short hair. It to me looks like a bit of a pixie cute which was my first short hair cut. Anyways that’s my take.
