American update for Mary: American police and justice system are divided between local, county, state and federal. US Marshal would have jurisdiction in a fugitive situation especially if there was inter-state possibilities. Local police typically do not like interference by FBI, ATF, SECRET SERVICE, MARSHAL, etc. Wyatt Earp is famous town Marshal, movie Tombstone is one of hundreds. He was made into a U.S. Marshal and hunted down a group of infamous criminals across several states. Remembered most for the Shootout at the O K Corral. Chicago dyes it’s river green on St. Patrick’s Day and has a huge drunken parade.
@hkpew Жыл бұрын
This is all correct, just want to expand a little. In most countries the equivalent of the US Marshal would probably outrank any local police with no questions asked. But because the US is a federal system with responsibilities apportioned between the sovereign States and the Federal government by the US constitution there are many circumstances in which the US Marshal, FBI agent, ATF agent, etc. really wouldn't have jurisdiction over local police. (At least in theory. In practice I think the federal courts have found reasons to expand the federal police power far beyond what a simple reading of the constitution would imply. But there are still limits.) That's not even considering jurisdictional questions between city or town, county, and state police agencies. But while there is plenty of room for arguments over jurisdiction and I don't doubt those arguments happen sometimes, I suspect that the movies exaggerate the frequency and degree to which these arguments occur. The agencies involved generally know what the score is, and under most circumstances the local police aren't going to complain about getting access to the additional resources the federal agencies have. I expect most of the time federal involvement starts when the local police request it. On the other hand, the situation at the end of this movie where the local police believe they are trying to capture someone who killed a member of their own force is definitely a case where such an argument might occur. (This movie implies that the locals actually plan to just gun him down on sight, something else that has happened but the movies probably exaggerate how frequent it is.)

There are so many things that help make this movie work. Tommy Lee Jones being one of the biggest ones but also the musical score, the fact that Julianne Moore’s role (one of her first film roles) was edited correctly and not turned into a romantic connection with Kimball like originally planned, and other details that make it flow so smoothly.

Your instinct about the female doctor played by Julanne Moore was correct. Orginally she was supposed to play a larger role as a love interest. That storyline was dropped because A. They felt there was already so much story going on and B. Adding a new love interest so soon after his wife was murdered took away from how torn up he was supposed to be and be in such a loving relationship with his wife. I love this movie SO much. It was immensely popular here (topped the box office for like six or seven weeks straight) and nominated for multiple Oscars, of which Jones won (in one of the tightest races in Academy history). I look at the film as sort of a modern retelling of Les Miserables: An innocent man is desperate to return to normal life against the fierce officer who's desperate to convict him. It's a simple story told with strong acting, confident direction, and plenty of tense uncertainty. The movie is a massive crowd-pleaser and one of my absolute favorites of all time. Some fun facts: The remains of the famous train crash still lay where the scene took place, you can see the wreck even now on Google Earth. And there's a commentary track on the special edition dvd, which features Tommy Lee Jones, but after a brief introduction and a comment or two he stays silent for like 90 percent of the track. He literally says nothing almost the entire time, it's really kind of awkward. I think the dvd was also where I saw a special about detective work that I found interesting. I learned that if you're being followed you should try to mix into a crowd and appear shorter than you are because people tend to spot others based on height.

Tommy Lee Jones won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for playing Sam Gerard. 'The Fugitive' was a 1960s American series with David Janssen (Kimble) and Barry Morse (Gerard). The series finale is still one of the most viewed finales in American TV history. The series took inspiration from Victor Hugo's 'Les Miserables', in that Kimble (Jean Valjean) helps people in his quest for justice for himself while being hounded by the authorities led by Gerard (Javert). The film was nominated for several Oscars including Best Picture. Cosmo was played by Joe Pantoliano, who you've seen in 'The Matrix' as Cypher, the guy who betrayed Morpheus and the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar. Jane Lynch did a lot of comedy films before doing 'Glee', which is what shot her to stardom. Julianne Moore has such a tiny role, I was amazed she did the film, because, at the time, she was a really hot commodity in films...her stock was skyrocketing.

Hi Mary! Greetings from Chicago! Great reaction! It's important to remember, film directors love to exaggerate and mischaracterize. It's a major device to add tension to a movie. It can easily leave viewers with the mistaken impression that most U.S. cops would rather shoot Dr. Kimball on sight, no questions asked, than interview eye-witnesses to discover he wasn't the one that shot the officer on the train. And with respect to arguments over jurisdiction, Hans Pew in the comment below correctly states, "under most circumstances the local police aren't going to complain about getting access to the additional resources the federal agencies have. I expect most of the time federal involvement starts when the local police request it." However, if everyone in the film acted rationally, there would be no movie, so the film creators would rather make it look like everyone in any position of authority in the U.S. is incompetent, deaf, dumb, and blind. It gets a little tiring to be honest.

There's nothing even remotely unusual about Chicago PD issuing a shoot on sight order for an escaped murderer suspected of killing a transit cop in the time period this movie was released. This one has a very high re-watchability factor. You'll catch a little more each time, as the details are all there in plain sight. I also highly recommend "Tombstone" (1993), starring Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, and Michael Biehn (and a host of other great actors and actresses!) It takes a few creative liberties, but it's a very fun film that really embodies the best of the American Western genre

What Lies Beneath would be a good one to watch. It has Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Hi Mary. This film was directed by Andrew Davis, who is from Chicago and sets many of his films there. This film is sort of a love letter to Chicago highlighting many elements of the city.. the EL train, the Chicago Hilton Hotel, Daley Plaza, the St. Patrick's Day parade, etc. Many of the cast members are from Chicago, starting with Harrison Ford, also- Jane Lynch Deputy Marshal Erin Poole Deputy Marshal Stevens (the guy that says "Right, no press!") the Corrections Officer who lied at the train wreck the 2 Chicago Police detectives the Chicago police officer who was shot on the train (he played the janitor in Scrubs) Dr. Alec Lenz Dr. Kimbel's attorney (Dick Cusack- John Cusack's father) news reporters Lester Holt and Pam Zekman.

16:00 He's not obstructing justice, he told them what happened. By giving Kimble money he might be considered "aiding and abetting", but that is usually in reference to a crime in progress I believe and this was after the conviction. "harboring a fugitive" would be if he gave him shelter. He's rich as well, so harder to prosecute.

Part of this movie was filmed in Paducah, KY where I live. In fact, Harrison Ford stayed in a house just half a mile from me. I never saw him but traffic was pretty bad for a couple of days with sightseers 😁

as child i loved this show. The Fugitive is an American crime drama television series created by Roy Huggins and produced by QM Productions and United Artists Television. It aired on ABC from September 1963 to August 1967. David Janssen starred as Dr. Richard Kimble, a physician who is wrongfully convicted of his wife's murder and sentenced to death.

I always liked to think "Richard" went back to that emergency room later (après paperwork) to ask if the doctor would like a cup of coffee.

I got a car lift from an older woman after I had twisted my ankle and had a bad fall on my arm. It was double as kind because I was sweating from the run. That was just a few years ago, maybe when someone is injured its different but it was still very kind and I wish I had taken her name.

You might be already getting this from everybody, but Wyatt Earp is a famous historical figure from the American "West", and though he's usually more well known for events later in his life, for much of it he was a US Marshal, or maybe a State or City Marshal? Which in those days was probably basically not much different than a sheriff, but just a different government organization with different jurisdiction. Now Marshals, though also conducting other law enforcement responsibilities, primarily have a focus involved with the corrections (prison) system, and transporting or capturing of prisoners. Which was the joke of the sheriff referring to the marshals as Wyatt Earp. Wyatt Earp's exploits have basically become like folk lore in America as one of the most prominent figures from his era, and lots of fiction has been created dramatizing them over the years. At least a handful of movies have been made about him. One of the classic ones is "Gunfight At The O.K. Corral" from the 50s with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas. The popular one to react to on KZbin is "Tombstone", which is a real fun one that's more of an action based western based on the later events of his life which he's most famous for, that being the aforementioned gunfight at the O.K. Corral, where he's played by Kurt Russell, and Val Kilmer's portrayal of his friend Doc Holiday is basically beloved by everyone for being just so cool. A movie actually called "Wyatt Earp" also came out about the same time though which is more of a dramatic look at Wyatt Earp's whole life, and Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday are played by Kevin Costner and Dennis Quaid. That one seems to have been kind of forgotten in the shadow of Tombstone's popularity, but if memory serves, it was a really good one directed by Lawrence Kasdan. You might not recognize that name, but he wrote some of the original Star Wars movies, among many other things, and has also directed quite a few Iconic movies. "Silverado" is a classic western from the 80s that also has a young Kevin Costner among a pretty large and great ensemble cast that Lawrence Kasdan directed, and that he and his brother wrote as a tribute to the westerns they grew up on. I'll spare you me making this even longer by giving a lesson on the history of the western genre, but with "Stagecoach", director John Ford, who's essentially the grandfather of American film, kicked off an era of Hollywood westerns that are famous for creating an image of "the West that never was" that lasted for roughly four decades and were distinct from the westerns before, and the westerns after that, which changed due to changes in the culture brought about in the 60s and 70s. "Silverado" is a real fun one though that incorporates a lot of the elements that were typical of that era. This is way off topic, but Lawrence Kasdan also wrote and directed "French Kiss" with Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan (ironically Dennis Quaid's ex wife), which is one of my favorite romantic comedies that I'd love to see you react too. Also, I'm not really sure if the original fugitive was based on a true story. I suppose it may have been, but this movie was based of the original TV show from the 60s.

In the USA there are more than 4 000 police organizations. They are federal, state and local (city/county). There are also private police, large companies like Disneyworld, universities, etc have their own police organizations under state law. Conflicts happen, but are not that common, they share a lot of stuff, like online systems, etc.

You should try to fit Witness (1985) into your schedule - a really great Harrison Ford movie that doesn't seem to be that well remembered these days.

Wyatt Earp. Tommy Lee Jones' character is a US Marshal - a federal police organization that protects the federal legal system, transporting federal prisoners and hunting down federal fugitives. Keyword: Federal. The most famous US Marshal was Wyatt Earp (1848-1929). He is a character in many western films, like Tombstone and Wyatt Earp (Kevin Costner). Keyword: OK Corral.
