Heavy Duty storage - they could have done somethig like I remember Yamato did for their Macross Valks. The square missle pods were basically hollow - so you could take the end cap off and put stuff inside. You could probabaly do the same thing here with the two missle pods. Would it cost more? debatable though. seems a simple thing if thought of in design.
