I had the same experience in NY last november. Wanted a Pr, was going strong till half way point and bonked so hard like never before. I run - walked the rest of the course + cramped up at the finishline and had to spend the next two hours in the medical tent drinking salty soup to recover. I'm definitely going back one day and complete the race in a way that doesn't involve medical staff 😉! Great video! Kudos✌ from Belgium!

Your experience was 90% similar to mine. I also had sub 3 ambitions, having run 2:57 a month earlier in London. But after doing a super sweaty shakeout run on Saturday, it was clear that that was not happening. I finished the first half just a minute behind sub-3 pace, to be honest, but it all went downhill from there. I've never walked that much in a marathon before, and I've never needed to use a toilet mid-race either. But there's a first time for everything. It was actually quite liberating to let go of any time goals and just focus on finishing and having fun (even though zero fun was had in the last 4K, damn those Central Park hills!!). Ended up with a 3:17, second slowest of my 9 marathons, and my slowest fall marathon. Still cant' beat myself up about it. We survived! The water stations and the ice packs at the medical stations were a godsend, and I also made use of every one of them. Although I hear that the later waves even had problems with just getting water! What a nightmare that would be....

I had sub 3 ambissions in Boston this year, I should’ve slowed down from the beginning instead of walking running the last 6 miles! So inspired by you! And now you ran a 2:38 in Boston! You’re amazing!

Really great recap!! I was there with you man. Set a goal for a sub 4, but I failed lol…it was my first marathon and one of the best experiences of my life, even though I didn’t hit my goal it was the best ever!! Oh and those ice packs saved my ass too! I actually put a bag of ice in my hat and it slowly melted down my face and felt amazing lmao.

Thanks for posting this, great video, brings it all back 😮 , my experience was very similar to yours, struggled from the start, run walk from mile 18, came in at 3.45 - goal was sub 3.30 Overall great experience although the terrible chaos getting on the bus at Staten Island was (around 2 hours wait) meant I as soon as I arrived at the start I had to dash before they closed the coral ! Not the best start Also stayed at the sonder 🇬🇧

Similar to my experience. I did San Diego and Bozeman in 3:20 and then 3:53 at nyc

Had a marathon in April, where I was on pace for a PR at 3:15-3:20, but about mile 16 I decided it was over - the weather went from 65 to 84 degrees by hour 3. It was brutal.

Nice video! I wanted to ask this on your previous one. You said you won't do a back to back marathon ever again. Is it because you couldn't recover from the last one? Or you didn't prepare the same way for this one, as you did for Chicago? In the video it seems the reason for your performance was basically the heat.

Yeah, I don’t think I recovered well, I didn’t train well enough in between, and honestly them being only a month apart didn’t give me enough time to mentally prep myself and hype myself up for New York like I should’ve.

Another great video. In the video you mention that you never run slower than 8:15 is that including your long runs?

Thank you! Yeah, in good shape, I typically run my long runs anywhere from 7:15-8:15 depending on how easy I want the workout to be.

A tip for you put the ice packs under your hat and as it melts it runs down the back of your neck keeping you cooler

Way to tough it out, CHI 2021 was like that and not fun im a FL runner and even more me the 70 and humid at the start getting up to 80 really hit me after about 17 miles.

You asked about the bicycle rider at the halfway point in this NYC Marathon video. She is part of the official NYC Marathon course-monitor crew. There are several - Angela, Rodney, and a few others whose names I don't know, who ride back and forth in all the New York Road Runners races to monitor the race and look for runners needing assistance. Even the smaller NYRR races have these bicycle monitors, as well as bike medics for smaller races. The NYC Marathon has lots of ambulances and medical stations along the course - smaller races have medics on bikes and these course monitors.

OMG!!! I was there and you just said everything that happened to me!! Literally everything. I adjusted for 3:10 but I was cooked by mile 9. The nausea kept me from taking any more than 3 gels. Run/walk and it was demoralizing. Watching the pace groups go by just gutted me. All that training and for it to be so HOT just sucked!! 1:34 halfway and 3:42 finish. I ended up in medical tent with heat exhaustion. I won’t go back. Not a fan of NYC. Thanks for making me feel less guilty.

How sad that you won't go back to our beloved NYC Marathon. It is NOT the fault of the NYC Marathon that the weather was so hot and humid this last year - please don't hold it against our exciting race.
