You know what was weird, my first play through of Fallout 3 was on a character named Gary. So, I'm wandering through the wasteland and find this bizarre vault filled with copies of myself [since my character looked similar] and completely misunderstand the plot of the game, I assume I'm some escaped close and the memories of my father was an implanted lie because Vault Tec is weird like that... then it turned out that it just a throw away random encounter that gave me and my character an existential crisis.

ok. so when i first entered this vault, being a sneaker / sniper build. (i use a 3d headset) the atmosphere alone fills me with anticipation. so i am sneaking around the vault, it is decayed and looks empty. i make a noise as i scout the rooms. i hear a voice behind me. it says"Garry" (OMG!! HOW THE HELL DO THEY KNOW MY NAME?"as my name is actually Garry ) i am shitting myself thank you Bethesda for making me so uneasy and scared in a old decrepit vault I have come to like vault 108 but my first time there was horrific!!!

Yeah, it's been a running joke ever since NV. I'd be surprised if the upcoming Vegas deal they're gonna do doesn't have more GAAAAAAAAAAARY. Literally the best part about the Mojave. Hands down. Also: If you notice... a lot of Gary clones are unaccounted for... *Slowly looks at the vault door* OH GOD IT WAS UNSEALED! THEY LET THEM FREE! - Yes, it's canon that some Gary clones left out into the wasteland, hence the Gary message being left in blocks everywhere. It's like Sly Cooper leaving his signature little raccoon thief symbol for every big heist. Every time Gary does something of note? Calling card. Just like I leave a .308 round on my sniping perch where I destroy bandit camps in Fallout 4 on my cowboy sniper character.

Is this Vault story any different than FO76 content? No. The Gary clones are no different from the Scorched; they just mindlessly attack. The lore is in holotapes and terminals, and can be found in multiple locations. The story also doesn’t make much sense (are the clones immortal? Or were they cloning themselves?).

As for clones not aging or dying, we have no idea when the Gary's where made as the vault did survive the bombs untouched, they could have been only a decade ago. This possibility in hand, what did they do until then, where there clones that predated the Gary's, and if so, did any leave the vault? Also "Dogmeat is unconscious?" Did you decide to modify the game to remove the mortality of the poor boy?

Sorry to pick up on two-year-old comment, just stumbled upon this video. Activity experiments on being a decade or so old I think they would have to be older than that because the remains that they find of the good doctor far far to decomposed for just 10 years. I don't know if anybody else has stayed this because I haven't gone through all the comments but proposed maybe the idea that the wastelanders inside might have inadvertently continued though briefly the scientific experiment and created a couple of clones.

But I don't think thats what the game devs tried to convey, instead bodies we find are either perfectly preserved "just died", or complete skeletons, much like we don't find children remains there was intentional choice made to censor the actual gore of wounds and rotting flesh, and to be fair the graphics in game wouldn't have done it justice, look for example at non-feral ghouls, and how the fail to trigger uncanny valley reaction, much less horrors.

Perhaps the original gary died after the 1st clone wad made, the doctor probably tought cloning the clone would provide the same result as the original so he desposed of the corpse, however garys dna became corrupted and each time the doc used garys dna the clones brains started to change. Why would he clone the clones? Because he had a job to due as instructed by vault tec. Perhaps vault 108 could've been a test to see if the area around the vault could be reclaimed by a small force of clones all decked with weaponry

Likely what's called ' Genetic Dillutation ' - basically if you were to use the clone of a clone of a clone of a clone and expend the same material again and again - you are burning material from that previous clone each time, so the clone you put out? It's going to have that same spent material and suffer some kind of deficiency because of it. It's why people believe even attempting human cloning is too dangerous. That and the dubious ethics of course.

I'm thinking that not all Gary clones were necessarily psychotic. There's also another Gary body you can find on the road close to the vault, which means some Garys were likely scavenging. It wouldn't be a stretch to assume some non-psycho Gary clones made it to various cities in the Wasteland.

Not sure if it's ever been said (coming across your work a bit later than you did it), but the original idea for Vault 108 was supposed to be a different experiment. The premise was explained to study conflict for leadership and power in a given vault or similar setting. Choosing an Overseer destined to only live up to 40 months and letting them pick every role of power once in there, it was destined to test how humans would react in said situation. The power failing before the vault opening was again one of these tests, to see if the power structure set up could handle this and get through it. Vault-Tec gave the vault 3 times the normal armory stock with the idea of seeing how the power structure would handle that as well. However, the residents themselves decided to do an experiment themselves to try to do a cloning process. So the Gary clones was never intended by Vault-Tec. The residents decided to try this experiment and upon the failing of so many attempts (at least failing to keep them non-hostile), they were set to destroy the clones, but the clones managed to fight them off and kill almost everyone who wasn't a clone, with few survivors managing to escape the Vault. This is how Gary 23 is thought to have escaped only to be captured later on as well, because the door was left open by a survivor who escaped. The idea being that Gary 23 got the Pipboy off of a corpse either in or outside of the Vault. Since the clones had a side-effect of always being hostile to non-clones, another side effect of the cloning process could have been the inability to age, hence why they look about as old as a young male that ideally would have been chosen to be cloned. However, the inability to age is their only resistance to death, hence why they can be killed by anything else. Sorry for the long comment, but I'm loving all of your work so far. I'm going through the Vaults playlist first, then I'll go through some of your other lore videos, so I may be dropping comments on them as I go. Fantastic work though.

I remember back in 2009 I was playing fallout 3 late at night and found this vault and got scared when I heard “haha Gary” and couldn’t find where he was then saw him and got so confused that he was Gary 37 and didn’t know why he had a number. Those were some good memories when I was 10

The hole experiment looks more like the a way to determine what made the original Gary immortal. 1. Create a lot of Gary children. 2. Reduce Food and other supplies. 3. look who survives. 4. Take samples and find the common genetic factors. I think cloning was meant to speed up the production of offspring. But the unusual genetic make up resulted in "faulty" clones (goulified Garys). If we go by the clones, the original Gary could survive with less or even no food and water for a long time and would not age. If i had to make a guess i would say his body could utilize radioactivity without the side effects ghouls show. This would also explain the great amount of reactors in unusual places.

Those are games you play for the narrative and the bizarre and funny things that happen in those games. Fallout 1 and 2 were considered particularly arduous and punishing, even when they were brand new.

Natsume-Hime CRPGs were standing strong at least since early 00s. Fallout 1 and 2 are nice, playing atm, but I can't immerse myself, even though I have played a lot of CRPGs, from Arcanum to Temple of Elemental Evil and Baldur's Gate. It could be that the hack arm off is because the Simulation Pod checks the 'profile' of the owner combined with the DNA of said user. You can't take it off and have someone else use it, because the DNA doesn't match, and hacking the arm off works because a clean cut would kill the arm, disabling the owner of the Pip Boy, allowing you to make a new profile to use for the simulation.

I'm thinking that the clones started cloning each other, rather than that they're immortal. Also one of the lines for the Outcasts is something along the lines of "Did we _really_ have to kill that Gary guy? It wasn't _his_ fault his Pip-boy didn't work!" Also Pip-boys can't be removed-Liam Neeson dad tells you that during your birthday party if you tell him to take it off. It's wired into your flesh.
