First year at SWD (Douglas Bader the exWW2 pilot was its patron), the first 6 months you went around the various departments within the unit and your scores in the first 6 months determined your job, always remember Mr Boggon (Harry) and his histrionics if you cocked up a job, he would clap, get everyones attention, then drop the piece of metal into a metal bin with a big clang, you then had to start again. hated the first year, but great memories. Did 6 months with Mike White in the small training section between the Joiners shop and the tin shop.

Brilliant video, I never worked there but a lot of my friends did and it was a sad day when the shops closed for the last time . Soon after there didn't seem to be much impact to other local businesses and pubs because of the redundancy money but after that Shildon went on a slow downward spiral of which it has never recovered .

Shame the works closed down, the bloody torys should never be allowed in to power, they destroyed this town.

It closed because it wasn't a viable concern! If it had been making good money --why would Mrs. T put all those people on the dole? Nothing is secure in life! Get over it! I left the Whessoe in Darlington in the early 70's --never looked back!!

I think you’ll find it was a viable concern. That was the point of the protests to keep it open
