The morse code style guitar playing that opens the song and continues on and off throughout is so unique and gives the song an extra something special.

The guitar sounds similar to the guitar in "Keep The Ball Rolling" by Jay and The Techniques of The "Apple Peaches Punkin"fame which came out in 1967. Keep The Ball Rollin - Jay & The Techniques kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGW3naCBaJd-m7M

The guitars were Robert White. Eddie Willis, and Joe Messina. There are two keyboards on it. The likely players were Earl Van Dyke and Johnny Griffin. Jamerson is on bass. Sounds like Uriel Jones on drums. Jack Ashford is on tambourine.

The backup singer sounds like a real vocalist and would have been a better choice as a lead for the entire Supremes. And then there’s Jamerson.

I remember seeing somewhere that lot of Motown songs used three guitars: one rhythm guitar on the downbeat, a lead for melody, and a second rhythm with the high, staccato backbeat stabs. This is probably THE one where it's most clear.

When a song is a hit, especially if it goes #1, it's like lighting in a bottle. One different element and it could have easily peaked at #100. So for all those that say Flo or Mary should have been singing lead, that may have changed it in some way that would have thrown off that lighting and the song wouldn't sell. You never know. I personally think that Diana's voice is what lead to the crossover success of the Supremes. I personally preferred Gladys' voice, but her soulfulness at that time limited her crossover appeal.

DaveShmadeCalabria The bass is plugged directly into the recording console...no amp and a ton of compression. Also, Jameson placed a sponge under the strings to achieve a partial mute and limit sustain.

Those Precisions came with foam under the cover for a mute. I bought a brand new one in 1971 and they still came with covers, undercover mute and flat wounds, sounded great from the factory.

I actually got up danced to this. Couldn't sit still. Didn't know they used the wall of sound technique to layer Diana's lead track. Gives her a fuller more dimensional, powerful, but light sound.

The track is great. The girls were great. I just don't understand why someone would want give all the credit to the musicians or say Flo or Mary should have been lead vocals on monster #1 hits with Diana singing lead. How could they have charted better, sounded higher or stood the test of time? Why do folks feel the need to choose sides? Great is great. No one needs defending.
@goovialisticprofunks
@goovialisticprofunks 4 жыл бұрын
You kidding. Flo and Mary were real vocalists and Supremes would have lived up to the name with them in lead vocals. Diana was very mediocre in those days. It was the songs, production and musicians that made it work.

I’ve got almost all the Motown session outtakes (1965-1970) Diana Ross rated the highest for dropping the F bomb! And she’ll admit to this .She has no timing constantly missed her cue. Couldn’t remember the lyrics or sang them out of place.Diana defiantly couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time! Look and any early videos she barely moves loose count.flub it Funny sense all they did back then was lip sync. But to this day all she does is just sway back and forth and still lip sync
