The AI sees text as "tokens", which are groups of characters represented by a single number. So most words, for example are just one token, one symbol in its "mind". So it rarely operates with individual letters. It's sort of like it thinks in Chinese characters, but you're asking it to reason about the english spellings, if that helps to explain it. To understand tokens better look up the Open AI tokenizer page and paste in some text. Flip through the modes and you'll see how the AI usually doesn't see individual letters at all, so it's bad about reasoning about them.

There's no way to definitively prove it, but It seems highly unlikely that emkay got the idea from us. A day after this was posted, this video only had 80 views. I doubt he would have even seen it. ChatGPT is just a hot topic right now, and we weren't the first to do a video like this either. I appreciate the concern though!
