Clams Casino is severely underrated imo. His sound has that outer space washed out reverb sound which was kind of like the precursor to those slowed+reverb mixes we have today and he was doing that in the 2010s.

this album and clams casino production in general was a gamechanger. not just in hip hop but in the wider electronic music sphere as well. I remember going to an electronic show in san francisco in 2012 and like 1/4 of the tracks dropped that night by several different djs were heavily indebted to clams. I highly encourage everyone to check out his instrumental mixtapes and the EP he released on triangle. one of my fav producers of all time.

For producers taking notes: This is how you would make an old non-clams casino asap rocky beat: 1). Find a soulful sample 2). Create a melody out of the sample by cutting out a part and lowering the semetiones(make sure to up the semitones a little bit at the end of the loop) 3). Use non-punchy(but somehting that still sounds prolonged)snares, a slightly punchy kick, a shit ton of 808 bass(w/distortion if you need an experimental sound), and experoment with different hihat patterns 4). Bring it all together as much as you can. Rocky loves both unity and chaos with his production. One beat may be the most peaceful thing youve ever heard but the ending of the beat may transition into some sinister demonic aggressive shit.

honestly purp was the perfect producer for rocky to maintain an experimental sound w mainstream appeal without trying to be underground or trying to hard to sound different. purrp was in that pocket frfr. his sound w him would've easily lasted into the 2020's and who knows what that would've evolved into along the way. a lot of bangers for sure

@@dafinkarnik it’s sad but hard to feel bad for him at the same time. But I feel like the alternate timeline where rocky n sgp would’ve stayed locked in would’ve had a huge impact on Rocky’s career musically. When the SoundCloud wave took off you can tell it was difficult for rocky to pivot to a consistent sound that worked. Sgp would’ve been perfect since a lot of the vibes that came out of it were directly influenced by him.

i distinctly remember how hated on ASAP Mob as a whole were when they first came out, because they were being garnered as "not staying true to their roots". he was borrowing from Memphis throwers and Indiana choppers, while still managing to keep his NYC identity. i found it incredibly fresh sounding while still keeping me engaged as a listener because it was familiar. that's the only way i can describe it. I actually think the loss of regional sounds hurt hip hop. All the major hip hop producing regions were putting out good music. NY and the Tristate has a sound. LA had a sound. The Bay had a sound. Texas had a sound. Atlanta had a sound. Memphis had a sound. The Midwest had a sound. Part of what I think was so dope was being from NYC or Cali and hearing 3-6 and the Memphis sound and being like oh shit, that's totally different! Or hearing Slim Thug and UGK and it sounding so new and refreshing. There was something special about regional sounds.

I don’t think they were lost per se, so much as it was merely the potential of the main idea behind Rocky’s music , being that the once-strict guideline behind an artist’s style was no longer so pertinently bound to one’s hometown / coastal influences. Regional influence still very much exists, only difference is that now artists and scenes are no longer so limited & boxed into cultivating singular, communal sounds.

Great video. People who know me know I've said this a ton of times, but LiveLoveASAP is hands down the best project of the new school. It ushered in a whole new sound that Drake, Thug and others rode to success. Opened up room for someone like a Metro Boomin to come thru.

1. Fertilized Rihanna is crazy 2. Rocky's beats weren't categorized as down south trap type bests because of the percussion. It got that label because it sounded a lot like chopped and screwed which is usually slowed down and mellowed out beats like they are on LLAsap
