9:51 So I used to know this friend of mine from an old role-playing forum who was also a really good artist. She loved to just surprise draw people's characters she liked usually in sketches, sometimes in full-blown fucking color and she was quick too. And she NEVER requested being paid. I remember one day she drew a couple of my characters and I was like, "PLEASE!! LET ME SEND YOU MONEY!" Because these were a couple of characters I really couldn't find an artist I trusted to draw right, and she'd always just be like, "No >:3" And it drove me nuts. Still does to this day.

I got the "Your prices are too expensive" thing from a GOOD FRIEND. This same friend edited my art to add shading multiple times without my permission, and keeps insisting I should shade it to make it "better" when I explicitly don't wish to. That shit HURTS, man. I know he's just trying to help, but it only comes off as insulting. Spoiler: I've gotten like 5 comms so far. My prices are worth it to some people. Just not him.
@44R0Ndin
@44R0Ndin Жыл бұрын
TBH, if they're editing your art without your permission like that, and they're telling you they don't think you're worth what you're asking, I get the impression of a general lack of respect for the bond between you. And from that, I get the piece of advice of "Maybe you need to find a new friend to fill that spot". Part of having friends is realizing when it's no longer mutually beneficial, like friendship should be. Also, if one of you feels like you're benefiting less than the other one, that's something that you both need to discuss honestly and openly, with the knowledge going into it that you might just agree to part ways. Point I'm trying to make is that I'm certain there's better friends out there for you, and to put it bluntly this person seems like they're being an asshole to you for no good reason, or at least no good reason that I have awareness of.

When my commissioners mod the commission or hire another artist to go through it I just take it as a grain of salt and occasionally use it as a insider information on the area they care about (such as XPerson likes the ears with Xstyle/detail). Art is like food. It's a different taste for everyone. Some people will add salt and pepper, others will slap on a slodge of avocado and most will enjoy it as is. From my perspective and experience. Your friends are more comfortable giving you straight up criticisms. And sometimes it's really useful. Other times, they don't know what they are talking about but just winging what they think when trying to help. Commissioners on/off but for the most part they are afraid of hurting the artist's feelings so they don't want to criticize something they didn't like and just take it as is.

You don’t shade at all? Of course you can do art in anyway you want. But it’s just surprising to hear that, because she is key to show depth and proper perspective. Honestly it sounds like your friend wanted to commission you, and still support you, but they knew for the image to look OK for them that they needed to add shading. Also, with them suggesting that it’s because of the fact that constructive criticism is a part of the art community..... even outside of the Fourier community, that is a pretty typical statement for someone to give to someone who is doing art. When you show people your art, you should say that I’m not willing to take any constructive criticism. Before you show it to them, that’s the only thing I could think to fix the issue. Since it’s more of a you thing. I don’t mean this in a bad way either, this is genuinely constructive criticism. Which I wouldn’t have even posted since you clearly don’t like it, but this is the only way to explain to you what was going on in actuality.

4:30 For the most part, it’s actually more difficult to draw anthropomorphic characters. A lot of artists I’ve seen suggest that you even start there if you have trouble drawing people. Since it can help you learn how to break down anatomy, in a way that is stylized, but still looks realistic.
@xdani_thethinkingneko
@xdani_thethinkingneko 8 ай бұрын
*** so the reason people suggest that from what I’ve seen, is because it is so much harder to draw anthropomorphic characters, so if you got that down, you should be able to draw people easier. At least that’s what I’ve seen some folks say. I don’t draw anthro tho so idk for sure. Learnin how to break down and stylize is hard, so furry art is a great gateway

I was thinking of potentially trying out commissioned arts, but I was unsure of the prices I would set, so I never got past that stage. But I was told by some of my artist friends to just avoid it, because I'm too new to drawing and it wouldn't make sense to pressure myself into creating pieces for people and charging them for.

The whole deal about pricing hit home for me. So many AI Bros keep hounding artists for their pricing for a luxury item that takes time to make and has to be expensive if it's going to pay enough for the artist to be able to live. I think the only thing missing from the video is a meme on the long period of time where nobody asks for comms and the insanity starts to set in ._.

You know, I think I've just thought of a way to defeat AI art permanently. Hands. AI art can never get hands right, it's always been that way and it's probably not gonna change any time soon. So what does that mean? Just a normal accurate drawing of a hand is akin to a digital signature on a piece of art certifying that it's not been thru generative AI algorithms. The practical side of this is that real artists should spend the time getting good at drawing hands, so that they can use a hand as part of their watermark. And to the generative AI that's still gonna try to forge that, I say "well, you tried, we found your kryptonite and are now salting the earth with it".

In terms of art, I'm pretty self-sufficient, doing most of what I want myself, mainly because there's no money left after the necessities of life are dealt with. This is technically a good and low-stress way of getting stuff done. However, that also means that I frequently change my drawing styles around, and try new one's whenever I want something different. In combination with having to deal with life alongside being artsy, this means I get like one drawing done in maybe a month. And that only if things go well and I like the new art style I tried out during the whole process.

People are not overcharging for their art. They’re charging for the fact, that they know somebody else would pay more. They’re charging more because often they have spent years on the skill, and their craft deserves to be paid correctly. I am low income myself too, I’m on food stamps, and I’m on section 8, that doesn’t make an excuse for me too EVER complain about someone’s prices. If I don’t like it, I just move on. Are you a creative yourself? It sounds like you’re not. Especially when you break down the hours that it takes to make some thing like this.... I for one think people are worth more than unlivable, slave labor wages.

I told him as nicely as I could, "I don't and never have done animation. I'm not the person you're looking for, and I don't have the time/motivation to commit to a project like that. But thank you anyway!" Guy kept saying things like "C'mon man.. It's just a small project, we could be so great working together! I'll pay you if you want. Jeez... I just wanted to do something cool for people. Sorry for liking your art and trying to offer you this opportunity :/ " Me, having this been the first time I had this kind of thing happen- Felt bad for awhile before coming to terms with they were just being a shitty person lol. All the time, I see stuff like, "Hey, drop your OC and I'll draw it," or, "Drop your OC and I'll draw it as ________." My point is there's no reason to beg someone for free art when there is always someone that is willing to draw random people's OCs for free.

I don't ever trust that kind of offer, first off there's too many AI "artists" out there (more like art thieves, because generative AI is just plagiarism software), and if I do give them my OC who's to say that they aren't just gonna drop it into some AI art program and then congratulations now I'm in their database and the thing can now mimic the style of that art piece (which is exactly what nobody wanted). Second, I personally don't have any art at all yet, but one of these days I'm gonna pick up a stylus and at least get a roughed-out ref sheet done, just "something" to have a rough idea of what I want my OC to look like, that isn't hosted entirely in my head.

I feel the “I do not see it” also applies with commissioning trans artists that still have their deadname on PayPal lol me and my friend have commissioned each other a few times, I’ve seen his deadname, but if you asked me if I could recall it I would not be able to because, well, I don’t see it lmao

9:22 I had a friend who used to commission some drawing from me from time to time. This mf always go with his own prices, and those prices always end up being so much higher than my regular. Also we live in the same city so he often bought me fast food and energy drinks as an extra

And honestly, Art in the furry world is SERIOUSLY under valued. Can you imagine strolling up to an artist and saying, Yeah, I want you to paint me a landscape with me and my dog. And I only want to pay 50 bucks for it. Oh and I'm not sure when I'll be able to get you the money, but I still would like it in a couple weeks.

Tbf, there are sometimes the price is so high it's genuinely shocking. I'll try to hide the shock, but sometimes I can't. Like, there was someone asking for 3 digits for simple lineart. They probably have no idea I had a reaction, but I'm still in shock. I'm not saying it's wrong. Price however you want. If it works, it works. If you're successfully selling lineart for 3 figs, don't you dare drop your price. It's not wrong, it's just surprising, especially when you can get the same quality for $5-15. Though it may also just be a class issue. If I'm buying art, then something else is suffering. That's the norm with poverty. Spending $50 on something as a kid(15-25) meant that I was gonna get yelled at. $5 is a lot of money when you're struggling. I assume middle-class can shrug off $50 a lot more easily, hence why what seems like high prices aren't surprising to people. Idk.

as someone who has been doing the search for artists for several years now it is really hard to find that artist that has the style you are looking for that line up with the character(s) you want to comission for a somewhat reasonable price. I could just be very picky though which i probably am xD
