Michael, thanks for having Heather Cox Richardson speak with your followers. I have been following you, Mr. Steele, for a number of years. I have been trying to understand your choice to be a Republican. As your geo/ethnic-contemporary (born in D.C, African heritage, highly educated), I am still baffled with your allegiance to the GOP (pre-MAGA). It seems to me that the idealization of Abraham Lincoln and his position on Democracy has yet to be materialized in real life via the GOP. Not that the Democratic Party is flawless, but as I recall, for all of my voting life, the policies that I would have alighned myself with came from the Dems, not the GOP. It seems like "Lincoln Republicans" are quixotic in their efforts to make a party ideology something that has long left the station. I know that this comment will probably fall on deaf ears, so indulge me the moment of response.

Agree! This has been a bafflement to me, too. I can only hope that Heather helped to inspire some introspection on the decision to be a member of a party that "never was" and see the light. :)

I was disappointed in this interview. Michael spent the first two-thirds trying to show her how much he loved Lincoln, as well as still (seriously?) schilling for states' rights. I thought Heather was very respectful while biting her tongue.

Michael, let me pick a bone here. You say 'we the people' ultimately decide, and not at the federal level - the states only. Heather asks, correctly, how many years should "some" people have to go without rights therefore? You say, 'the people decide' - I assume you mean through their votes. But if they are prohibited from exercising that voice, how are they going to change the system?

States rights vs federal rights. So Michael is right in the sense that people's rights (not as individuals but as communities) matter. So at the federal level we decide how nuch autonomy states get. At the state kevel we decide hiw much autonomy counties and cities get. And as counties and cities and neighborhoods we decide what autonomy we leave for ourselves. ( We do this up and down the stack, by limiting tge power of government at each level, as to how much authority it has over individuals vs institutions) The mistake we've made is allowing states to decide who votes and who votes for what. That should have been enshrined in the constitution.

The problem with "We the people" is that half of we the people support authoritarian rule. They do not support rule by we the people. They have been told their whole lives that the best case scenario is a literal kingdom with a literal king who will reward them and smite their enemies.
@NaomiPhillips-v7j10 ай бұрын
I have long agreed that we the people are responsible for the people we have elected that are creating so much chaos in our government. What I have not heard discussed is the influence of money on this outcome. As a voter, I can vote, but it appears the results are often a reflection of the amount of dollars poured into any campaign. We all know there are contribution guidelines, and we also know there are ways that have been found to get around us that continue to influence the outcomes.

Too many girls and women have been slaves to men since the beginning of time! It’s not all about the color of skin but the hearts of men toward those that they are able to control if they choose to…and too many feel entitled to do so. Many times it goes unnoticed is the big problem and that’s a huge and unfair problem for females. This really needs to be addressed as well.

Protect your public schools and libraries. Make sure American History is being taught and check which text books are being used as Texas is a major source of biased information. And make sure American Civics or Government is being taught. That members of Congress don’t know what the 3 branches of Government are is outrageous.
@allisontison4011 ай бұрын
South Carolina never taught any history past the revolutionary war when I was in the public schools from 1964 -1978. Yes, Michael, this is a crux. Thank you. For the fun; I was raised on Lincoln Circle, in Belmont, mass. from 1955. My father and grandfather ran a famous law firm, and hid the details from me. I was casually friends with Joseph Welch, who would drive my father home,from work, cause he distrusted the bus and subway, from Boston. My father, had no time, to dally, and had his 3 rd heart attack ,at age 56. Mere perseverance, will not suffice, where dark money is seen on the surface. We grew up challenging the John Burch Society, simply, because of the narrative. My sister, took to B.U. Law school. As the last child, my father did cultivate my musician-ship, poetic art, and skills as a anti-class warrior, both physical and spiritual. He was as well the quietest anti-racist -, lover of jazz music, I have ever found.

They suddenly, noticeably lived on the streets.The Wall Street Journal, of all newspapers, warned of the ballooning of executive pay, even when their companies did poorly.The WSJ also wrote of the extreme right entering local politics with long-term plans to lead national politics.
