this made me think a step beyond the normal issues of authorship and the artist v audience relationship. I am not too familiar with this artist's work (yet), however I am swirling in discourse with myself (yes, that is legitimate, given the identity within the self is forever barred by the other) over this idea that an audience may somehow taint art .. objects or otherwise. this is perhaps better exemplified with music in that a song written and recorded for a specific person as a personal gift can lose it's intimacy and importance if played for a massive audience that has no connections n to its lyricallity- but the main point that struck me is how the amount of exposure certain canvases have received can affect their value in both cultural and private/collection ternswhen you look at the history of contemporary art/c painting i.e. there are more than a few J M Basquiat paintings which have become almost cliché information for young painters in university settings, while some work that is perhaps better as neoexpressionism goes are lost to the text.
