I went to the ITC and USBC headquarters and bowled 2 games free fall and 2 games String. I went in thinking a lot of negativity towards string pin like most bowlers, but I was actually pleasantly surprised. I bowled about the same on both. I didn’t notice much difference, other than the rack would sometimes drop down 2-3 times to untangle strings, but was flawless. One positive in string is the pin placement on string is much more accurate, no offset racks. Also no dead wood. I think if bowling goes to string pin, most will get used to it, just like all changes in this sport, pin boys to automatic pin setters, hand scoring to computerized scoring, going from plastic to urethane, to reactive with asymmetric cores, wood lanes to synthetic, hand oiling to oil machines, one handed to two handed. Changes are inevitable.

I'm sure they can be made cheaper than current designs... but the real question is can they get AS cheap as these pathetic things? And I'm betting that the answer to that is "no". @@bunker5696 As I understand it, the magnet thing was tried at one point years ago, and they couldn't make it work. The problem is you still have to have some way of getting the ends of the cables close enough to the top of the pins for the magnet to pick them up, which apparently is a whole lot easier said than done. Doesn't much matter easier way... the die is cast. The powers that be...in other words, Bowlero, as they basically control the industry at this point... have been pushing everyone towards this for years, now. The lack of USBC certification was the only hurdle keeping most proprietors from doing it. Now that certification is no longer an issue, most centers will fall like dominoes in the next few years. They won't be able to re$i$t the profit incentive for long... or if it's an independent center, they'll just sell out to Bowlero, and let them make the decision for them.

Educate people on the matter! I don't wanna see string pins die completely. I actually really want to play tenpin string bowling, never played that. Here in my city, in Brazil, there's only one bowling alley, and it's free fall. Also if strings are gonna make things cheaper, I suppose that's a plus. But never let free fall die, please. @brettrobbins2707 Жыл бұрын
I avg the same when i did a string league, I would notice about 2 extra strikes in a set that got a warp to catch the string for a strike, Maybe 1 extra split conversion or 2 a set also, The difference is you dont strike as much, you might get 1 less strike a game because you wont get messengers or as much pin action as free fall so it kinda just off sets the difference. The biggest gripe i have had with the string pins is there is only 1 set of them and they always face the same way, so they wear out really really fast and you get loads of broken pins or really bad reacting pins quite often in the pockets if the center doesnt replace them at the begining and middle of a 32 week season, them pins in the front take a beating.

I know of a very large league that left the center they were in because of a lack of maintenance on free fall pin setters and overall lane conditions. With the talent pool & knowledge pool for mechanics, it appears to be limited. The future of free fall pin setters in bowling appears to be at a tipping point. Is string pins the answer or just a big bandaid to cover up a larger issue? In the States, I'd be interested in a stat that shows how many of Bowlero's centers are string vs. free fall; the PBA doesn't have any events that I know of on string pins. So, that might be the biggest indication of where this debate lies.

My local house switched to strings in 2021, so I've bowled on them since then. Spares are easier with the strings and I've picked up the 4-7-10 twice with strings as well as some other smaller splits. Trick is to throw hard and barely clip the front-most pin. This will slam it into the nearby wall and bring it back very hard, often converting the split. I usually throw at about 13 mph but for the bigger splits, I amp that up to 15.5 mph via holding the ball up to my chest, instead of holding it at waist level, raising the back-swing, and using a 14 lb. plastic ball instead of my usual 15 lb. reactive resin ball. One not so good thing is that a light pocket hit very often results in a 4-5-7 split, which is makeable but there's not much error room for the shot. A hooking ball aimed at the head pin is in the right area to cover this split. It's not that big a split but it can be tricky. Lastly, I am a sr. citizen coming up on my 74th birthday, and have a 197 average. High game recently was a 278 and high series was a 713. Not bad for an old guy. 😀

Maybe you can cut during weekend but during the week days you need that mechanic and week evening for league you need someone still pinchasing for tangle for fast service league.

By far I’m not in favor of strings but when you roll on them after a few games you really do t notice as much as you think you would .. the times are dictating the use of them due to cost and lack of qualified mechanics to work on the free fall .. yes there are differences some crazy split pick ups and some affect on messenger type falls .. I’m not going to quit I have a love and passion for this game and have fought hard in the past year to at least return after I lost the use of my dominant right hand and learned to roll as a lefty I’m not letting string take away a game I love

Our House gained almost 2 dozen additional teams from a house installing string bowling in Eugene, OR. Our Monday league is 24 full teams.

Honestly the carry looks sus on those splits. Is there a weight or density difference with the pins because they just seem to move oddly

I'm a very casual bowler; just use house shoes and balls and always go to the traditional "old-school" bowling centers. But big time no on string pin!!! I have bowled full-size string pin and have noticed you do not get as good pin-action as normal pins but yet the pins seem to fall easier because of the strings pulling them down. Given that, any traditional center that converts to string pin is just owned by a cheap-skate and is going to cost themselves a ton of leagues and even casual bowlers.
@jamisonplotz464 Жыл бұрын
What's the difference in price between the 2 and maintenance would be better on the string then the other, they might get tangled up but it's easy to get them undone and with the other pinsetter you can easily get something caught in it and get injured

I'll say this: If recreational bowling is that unprofitable that string pin bowling starts to exponetially grow...bowling for serious players will fade away. It's comical how the center of gravity is affected in both a 16 pound ball against 10 3.68 pound pins when you have a nail and cable hooked into it. Wow do string pins SUCK.

Free fall bowling is the basis for the game. Bowling doesn't need to be reinvented.
@dustinfalconer8793 Жыл бұрын
Nope. Not at all for me. The 7-10 looked like the string pulled 10 pin forward in to the 7pin. While kt was being pulled to its original position. Where as with out strings you have to rely on the bounce

Yup that 7-10 split on free fall pins would of never converted

All for string pins on a casual level, childrens parties, or people bowling for fun. The strings will make or break your game on a competitive level. That inconsistency would be unfair as hell, regardless of what the stats say.

This is the future of bowling, so this sport can/will survive. It's not for the middle-aged bowlers who can not see the need to change the way bowling is done to make sure the alleys won't close. Unfortunately, many will complain and refuse to bowl anymore, but that becomes a personal choice. Where we live we have only 1 alley at it would have closed due to high labor cost and very low revenues. Thanks to strings they were able to stay open by eliminating the mechanics in the back and they were able to adjust the line fees to be able to stay in business (thank the bowling gods). Our seniors which is the largest league in this alley were very happy to see the alley stay open. Yes, the strings impact on some spares but the essence of the game is kept and continues to advance to keep the sport alive! It does beat virtual bowling and it wi keep the grumbles away until they see the advantages instead of the uniqueness of the game. The scores are relatively the same so it's a good thing. Now to have these changes certified and incorporated into the USBC. My opinion.

Im a lane mechanic and were switching from brunswick GS-X to Brunswick strings later summer. From an employees view it couldnt be any better since my coworker quit last month and being the only one in a center being able to maintain lanes is a nightmare. That plus we barely get professional players visiting anyways and for regular customers it improves the quality of the visit a ton since the string machines are much faster and less likely to produce problems in the long run. Our league players also said they dont mind the switch.

Then your league bowlers are either lying through their teeth, or they're rationalizing because they've got no other place to go and these joke machines are now their only option.
@Tyi276 Жыл бұрын
I hate to be rational because I don’t like string pins. But costs are going up to run a bowling center which means league fees are going up. If something drastic isn’t done to alleviate this, bowling a weekly league will be too expensive for most people.

@@AverageLeagueHack Agreed. I'm not bowling any league on strings. Want me to pay more for League? That I'm willing to do. Weird carry and no messengers is a waste of my time. I can see rec bowlers not caring, but the world is made up of more than just those people.

Maybe they should oil the lanes like the other ones, some of the string lanes are dry and the ball hooks more, so why not try it with them oiled for one game and the other game dry, see how it works out and i can see by the different scores people have and the pin carry
@Squid165 Жыл бұрын
Maybe bowling centers should employee well paid facility managers to work on traditional mechanical setters than put in these parlor machines.

Bowled on strings. It was abysmal due to the lane conditions. There was absolutely no oil on the lane where I bowled at. Would definitely try again though at an actual bowling alley.

I bowl in Monday Tournaments with them and it’s awful. Pocket 4 -5 -7 is the new light tap. Late falling 10 pins bc of the string and your are better off bouncing a 6 - 7 off the back than cutting it into the pin. Doesn’t feel legit to me.

Theres shots that will be made highly possible by strings but also shots that are randomly made impossible by strings. Such as the strings pulling pins back from potential hits.
