The lack of a monoculture is so spot on. There is this guy Mdou Moctar. He is from Niger. That's right, Niger, not Nigeria. That's truly "middle of nowhere" for most people. But he's out there playing shows and festivals, all because of his songs being traded through smartphones. To be fair, he was spotted by a producer who brought him to western attention, but it proves you're 100% right in stating that no one is going to come discover you, you have to go out and get people to notice you. And the recognition can come from anywhere at any time. So get out there and start doing it. Best of luck, and be unique, be yourself! 🙂

This was a little bit of fresh air to hear. I stopped making music for about 3 or 4 years because I felt like I was getting lost in the crowd and I didn't really have anything to offer that the world hasn't already heard a billion times. So I focused on learning audio engineering. I started school for Audio last year after learning on my own for 8 years before that. School has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone and I have to write music for class, I'm starting to remember why I loved making music. Music has been an important part of my life since the day I saw my first electric guitar 28 years ago. I've been in a dark place lately in my life and I think getting back to writing and creating is what I've been missing. Who knows...maybe I'll make something people can relate too.

It is a good time for musicians. Instead of replacing artists, AI hype has exposed itself. It can not be as creative as we are. Humans are still the kings of art. It will never change.
@Vyrkadian
@Vyrkadian 9 күн бұрын
That would be true if all AI technology development stopped today, but it’s constantly evolving and progressing. Creativity comes from your experiences and from the knowledge you’ve gathered throughout your life. AI is currently in a stage of gaining experience and already possesses the combined knowledge of millions of human beings; in a few more iterations, it will surpass us in the creative aspect as well. Even so, I don’t think all is lost. As the video’s creator says, there will be people who listen to anything, and others who prefer music created by flesh-and-blood artists.
@mater5930

@Vyrkadian AI is not gaining any experience or knowledge. It is as dumb as a brick. It's as experienced and knowledgeable as a Casio calculator. But I understand how easily some be tricked into humanizing something that is so far from the human experience. Humans can go a long way with a little knowledge and experience, AI has all of the internet/information from everywhere in the world and yet it cannot understand a single thing. It's just a calculator, man.

"Comparison is the theft of joy." Spot on. The enemy of artists (and I select that term intentionally) is that when creating it's easy to create from the outside, in. Which is to say thinking about the the medium or the perceived fans you might get, and forgetting that art comes from the inside out. If you keep that in mind, THEN you look at the craft of making music and get it sounding amazing. But it all comes from the heart. I love your take on the business. I've subscribed and will stay tuned.

As someone who spends hours crafting unique music and experiences every day, I can't help but feel that those who rely solely on AI are missing out on the joy of the creative process. Sure, AI can produce some impressive results, but there's something so satisfying about putting in the time and effort to produce something that truly reflects your own artistic vision. So I'm ok with how I'm currently doing things. I'll rerecord my stuff if I ever get a good studio budget. I'm not sure where I was going with this anymore, but I think DIY indie music that's imperfect will make a comeback when people get tired of AI music. A lot of people are getting tired of autotuned vocals as it is lol. Side note, Bluesky seems to be really good for reach and growth right now, you get treated the same as major artists, an extremely level playing field.

Good live drummers are gold. There is this guy that I worked with a bit in ATL and Nashville and is k ow for his 'pocket'. We would typically have him replace programmed drums on songs that we had started which is of course backward of the best way to do it but that's what I had. Anyway, his new drum tracks were always awesome and so in the pocket. Yet when I looked at the wave forms I could see that he was actually rushing his hi hats and other parts. It made no sense but sounded great so it went untouched. Point being that math and precision has nothing to do with soul and feel.

I always tell the artists that I work with to keep moving ahead even if they feel like they are not doing totally right. Hanging out at some major label offices years ago I saw how clueless they were. Most of their efforts failed but the business was funded by a few popular artists that had. But they kept operating because they understood how that works. But when an indie artist has a setback it's easy to think it was a massive failure because you're alone and your perspective is too close. So keep going and don't worry about being perfect.

1/2 The following is an article I wrote on a substack that I don't care too much to have it updated, but it rings A LOT with what you are saying here. If you have time, read it. "Some fear AI, some use it just to speed up their workflow, others praise it, and some ignore it completely. In between these four perspectives lies reality. The reality I'm about to present resides at the opposite end of what is generally thought. Yes, I firmly believe that artificial intelligence will revive human talent. Rock has never died; pop music, on the other hand, has. Since I deal with music, I'd like to confine the topic to the field I know best, but I'll occasionally step out of the box to relate different disciplines, which seem to be affected by AI in different cycles. The world of music is over. AI will take control of the world. It will replace every job, and then what will humans do? This is more or less what many people fear: the total takeover of everything. AI will write the best screenplays in the history of cinema. It will write better hits than the Beatles. It will cook the best Neapolitan pizza, and the pizza will come out exactly the same every time because...AI cannot make mistakes. Okay, let's all calm down and take a deep breath. First of all, we need to remember one thing: the Turing test has not yet been passed. In other words, AI does not "think." Many like to think it's "thinking" when they see ChatGPT respond to a complex query. But AI does not think. It is not a big brain hidden somewhere in the world handling every request from every human. It is simply a sophisticated algorithm fed terabytes and terabytes of information, and thanks to this algorithm, it can seemingly intelligently navigate and formulate competent answers in a matter of seconds. Some might argue that even though AI still doesn't "think," what I've just described is something we humans can only dream of doing. Here you go, a ten-page contract in typical lawyer-speak. I copy and paste it into ChatGPT and give it a prompt like "Read these 10 pages and explain it to a 13-year-old." And there you have it, instead of spending 2 hours deciphering every clause, in 5 minutes, I understand everything and can make an informed decision not to sign the contract. Or, I don't understand anything about guitar, drums, or bass, but I can write fantastic rhymes. I go to one of the AI songwriting sites, input some of my spectacular rhymes, and then give the prompt "Romantic rock song." Thirty seconds later, the track is ready. Perfect mix, perfect diction. Catchy melody! The song could be on the radio tomorrow! Indeed, under these conditions, saying that AI will bring out the humanity in us is a rather controversial concept. The other day I was in a Chinese store in Italy. As I wandered among the shelves, I was drawn to the Italian music playing on the store's PA system. Here, a bit of Italian backstory is needed. For 20 years in Italy, so-called "mainstream" music has been trap flaunting zero vocal skills and is seemingly marketed as mainstream, but no one around sings or whistles it, which in Italy, means something is still unknown. Back to the Chinese store, the music playing at that moment was not the aforementioned trap. It wasn't poorly sung. It was arranged to international standards. The lyrics had meaningful rhymes (usually, trap music is riddled with childish and sometimes ridiculously low-quality lyrics). Wait a minute! Who is this band? I immediately went to the nearest speaker and activated Shazam. There I was, waiting for Shazam to recognize the song but...nothing. How is it possible? The production was high level. The execution was impeccable. It's impossible that such a track, playing on the radio, hasn't been released. At this point, I forgot what I was supposed to buy and was already waiting for the next song. The style of the next piece was slightly different, but again the lyrics were quite acceptable (again far from the chronic mediocrity of Italian trap artists), high production quality. Original chord progression. This time Shazam won't fail me. And yet: nulla. Nada. Nothing. Shazam doesn’t move. Suddenly I realized, "My God! The store's PA system is playing Italian music generated by AI!" Reading the terms of these sites that generate original songs in seconds, I noticed a rather peculiar clause. If you don't pay a monthly fee, you have no right to copyright the generated music. This might explain Shazam's failure in the Chinese store. Maybe the tracks were generated by someone who didn’t want to spend too much on copyright, but perhaps by doing so, the store doesn't have to pay taxes for playing music over the PA system. Anyway, paying to have copyright on music generated by a site (obtained through the analysis of millions of pre-existing songs) is a hard pill to swallow for those wanting to flood the world with new and innovative songs. After all, the AI is only producing new music from tracks we humans created in the past. Reducing the example to a minimum, it's like if I fed the alphabet to the AI, then the AI subsequently formulated a word derived from that given alphabet, and finally, if I wanted to copyright that word, I would have to pay the site that provided the service. It smells a bit like zeitgeist opportunism - perhaps a free donation would be more appropriate. But let's not stray from the point. There are people with a lot of money to spend. A lot. The world could be saturated with AI-generated music starting tomorrow, and honestly, I don't think people would be able to tell when an AI-generated track is playing on the radio or over the PA system while shopping at the supermarket. So it's over: for what exact reason should kids today start forming a band, which means having to agree with 3, 4, or even 5 different heads, then having the financial availability to buy musical instruments; finding a place to rehearse and when after a year (if you're lucky) they'll have 5 original songs, they'll have to spend thousands of dollars to achieve the production sounds that an AI song generation site would produce in 30 seconds? The answer lies in those people who passively listen to music while shopping at the supermarket. I left a particular hint earlier. I said that people wouldn't be able to tell when an AI-generated track is playing on the radio. To understand why this happens, we need to go back to 1999, the year many agree was the beginning of the end. The introduction of Pro Tools into the world of music production. The almost mandatory imposition (we can even remove the "almost," from 2010 onwards) of using a metronome, which has made music so unbreathing and undynamic. If 10,000 tracks have played multiple times on the radio and all had a BPM of 108, an AI track at 108 BPM can easily blend in with those 10,000. People's minds have long been conditioned by this metronome-driven music. This also happens at live concerts (incredibly) since flocks of artists won't perform unless there are at least 2 laptops on stage.

I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel. From a lot of the things you've been bringing up I'm assuming we've been in the business around the same amount of time. I've been lucky and was able to make a decent steady income and for the most part stayed busy. I went through many different changes including stages of bitterness, anger... luckily I have some great friends that were there to give me a reminder of what I do for a living and remind me of why I got into it, and that always snapped me out of the funk. I spent my career touring and playing as a musician playing other peoples music. It was only after things went to crap a few years ago I decided to remain off the road and start focusing on myself. Having time to reflect on the future I just want to add my opinion to this topic... There will always be a future in music an as an artist, it's what we do focus on your own/collaborated stuff, play/create for yourself. For your younger audience they are the future, imagine the possible tech that may evolve out of quantum computing... For the older guys that have been around, we better make way for the next gen... For the hobbyists, welcome, enjoy yourself. History has shown that it's always been a select few that rise to the top, but there are many ways to make a living and always remember why you started. I'm not sure if that makes any sense. Again this is such a great channel and perspective.

@@FreakingOutWithBillyHume I truly believe we are wired differently, what other industry goes into business to lose money hahaha. It's been since I did a pub gig, but a buddy called me up a few weekends ago and asked me to sit in and do a duo. At the end of the night we were packing up and he says he'll send me an e-transfer in a week or so, I was confused, I asked him if why he wasn't getting cash, apparently a lot of dives no longer pay right away. I wasn't concerned about the money, I was concerned that the local musicians allowed themselves to be put in that situation. As we were talking and I was trying to explain that we are our own worst enemy, a server came up to me with the bill for the burger I had earlier. I couldn't help but look at him and laugh. The internet is great for the independent artist who prefers the organic DIY hands-on approach to their career but having a big machine behind an artist to market, promote, distribute and guide artists was the ticket to the most amount of ears to hear their music. Sure, we can argue that there’s artists that got major label deals that left us scratching our heads but there was always something different enough about them to warrant being signed (the end of the ‘hair metal’ era withstanding - labels just threw enough bands with long hair and guitars against the wall to see what stuck and ended up dropping all of them). Gatekeeping has always been a bad word when describing any institution but I look at it as an exclusive country club or governing body - if you’re unique (value) and good enough (talent) to stand apart from the mass majority and know people (network), I’m a firm believer that perseverance pays dividends.

Great video Billy. That ‘comparison is the thief of joy’ is a great quote. The only person you should compete with is yourself. You may still be beaten, but it’s a much more even playing field and hopefully you can give yourself some tips on what to do differently next time 😂

For the past 25 years, I've made music not for the money, but for the love of making music! I don't make music as a career, instead I do it because it's my favorite thing to do when I'm not working. I hope people get back to making music for the music and not for the money.

Even people that are making music for money should be making music for money. What I mean by that is this.... every hot song I worked on in my career had its genesis in love, inspiration, a joke, a story.... whenever you put money first the music suffers.

Unfortunately, some use this otherwise well-meant notion of doing it for the music as the reasoning to pay musicians less or nothing at all. It gets even worse when some who are so wanting to perform start undercutting other musicians. Then they ruin their own financial chances. Some musicians have purposely moved away from markets with notorious undercutting and miserly club owners to those where establishing your price was seen as extremely professional. Consequently because you demand more, your quality and musicianship go up especially to maintain your reputation. And you get more PAID bookings. (You may get a bonus too, which you can donate to a charity or music scholarship.) Top doctors and lawyers demand top compensation. So must competent musicians.

Great video, i really enjoy your insides! Music can be compared to movies from the 80's which had all these all cool practical effects, which are not perfect but you see the amount of tears and sweat they must have put into them. This adds authenticity and you apreciate the work the artists put into.

I think that like art paintings AI will not be able to produce masterpieces, but already today AI art generation is pretty mindblowing. The same will happen with music I believe, that there will always be music made by humans and that AI will be used as a tool, like a drum machine on steroids.

I am totally with you on your current music viewpoints! I just made my second cd (a truly homemade effort including constructing cd covers, inner sleeves and lyric booklets) and it encompasses a wide variety of styles and instruments (like that hammer dulcimer you played). I make a point of not using Autotune and sticking with actual amps and effect pedals. This matters to me, and it is a difference that I can hear. It is not a career, but a way of sharing what I hear in my head with friends and families. Thank you for giving me hope for the future musicians and music lovers!

I think it’s both a good and bad time to be a musician. The availability is awesome, and damn near anybody can get “famous” just by being blessed by the algorithm. I went to school with a guy named Stephen Sanchez who has I think over 1 billion listens on a song that blew up over TikTok. The best part: his song is like a 1950s love song. I think people are becoming more and more aware of the musical wasteland we are in and want to listen to some authentic stuff again. Here’s to hoping.

Ah, one of the best Turkisch bands is based in Amsterdam. Altin Gün. That is how international music is these days. They toured with Tame Impala and were Grammy nominated. Founded by a Dutchy who discovered Turkisch psychedelia from the 70 and a few second and third generation Dutchies with Turkisch roots. They are great musicians and there music in phenomenal. Ah I heard Maria Careys "All I want for Xmas right now", maybe AI isn't that bad. And a little addition, the future of music arrived in mid-spring this year, coming out of the genius minds of a team surrounding a singer songwriter I would never have guessed possible, to be anything like that. Willow Smith. Canonized by Rick Beato. Analized by David Bennett. Loaded with Grammy nominations. And the first singer to make me B-line near closing time to Sounds, my local world famous record store, to pick up her album (no digital download for me lady) and be flabbergasted by it, 25 minutes later. So for me the answer to your question is on word: Willow.

Agree with pretty much all of this. As far as AI is concerned, it will probably take work from people who make stuff for ads or KZbin vids. I can't see it replacing people with real talent. The upside of AI music is that many more people with a bit of (or very little) talent can now have fun creating their own songs in a way that was previously impossible. I can't sing, so AI is a godsend for me. But even my friends and family show no interest in listening to what I make. No pro musician needs to worry about my AI music hobby.

The future of music is fine! The musicians who do music for music alone is great. The music business future is fu3ked up, that's include all the musicians that in or aiming to that path. Most of those "artists" won't survive. Solutions- do music for doing music and learn a new craft like being an electrician or so... That way you will supply service without dealing with running a business.

Thanks soooo much, being an old musician, studio rat myself making records then cassettes then CDs then back to records for everybody else, now I’m finally doing an LP of my own stuff. It feels good, sounds great, and has been a blast working with awesome real musicians doing these tunes. Here’s a couple studio hints from back in the day… Tune Up! Don’t play to a click ( I know …you have to be good enough to do that) Record basic tracks with at least 2 or 3 people actually playing together… that’s where the magic happens.
