The abandonment of older games is very sad, Sony had the right vision with the early PS3 models but we didn't really care back then when they changed and now it's too late. I know it's very difficult and expensive to build backwards compatibility but in a perfect world games would be available for ever regardless of the system and how old they are at least from the same console manufacturer just like movies and music. Art is for ever and shouldn't be abandoned or out of print
@Broll00Ай бұрын
You say that but remember how crushed they were at the start of that console war. Had they stuck with that vision they might be in the place of strength in the industry they are now. The fact is backwards compatibility is both an expensive and a niche desire. Those two don’t add up to profitability. If Sony were a charity or interested only in being a niche offering for hobbyists, then that vision might make sense. The only reason backwards compatibility came back somewhat with this generation is because it’s cheap when the architecture is so similar. Based on that Ryan’s right that IF PS6 has a disc drive I could see it being compatible down to PS4. However that’s a huge IF. If their’s a disc drive at all on PS6, it will be an extra accessory and likely not even lock into the console like the latest PS5s do. I’m not expecting to see one at all, that way I’ll be happy if they surprise me.

I think the problem with the Ps5 isn’t a lack of games, I mean last week alone we got Metaphor, Silent Hill 2 and Sparking Zero, but it’s the amount of Ps5 EXCLUSIVE games. The Wikipedia page for the Ps5 only has 22 exclusive games, and that’s including games that haven’t even released yet or are for the PSVR2 which is its own thing. I think Sony’s in a weird situation where they could either go Nintendo’s direction and focus on software exclusively for their hardware or go Xbox’s route and focus on making software for as many different devices as possible. Sony seems to be going in the latter direction
@antiquecardboardАй бұрын
"Sony seems to be going in the latter direction." So, they have chosen death. I agree with you. But PS exclusivity is all they had going for them. They are going to get battered if they try to compete with the entire overcrowded market with $300 million dollar projects (as is already happening). Sony has lost its way.
@laurenriley2943Ай бұрын
Most exclusives Sony had throughout the years were third party anyway. People keep saying the PS4 had so many more games, but they neglect to mention that Nier Automata, the Yakuza franchise, Ni No Kuni 2, and Persona 5 were all part of the exclusive lineup. You can still play the newest iterations of these properties on PS5, but they aren't exclusive anymore. It is not like Yakuza 0 needed the POWER OF THE PS4 in order for the game to run. The Switch proves that quite a few of these 8th generation games did not really use the power of any console. Nier Automata, Ni No Kuni 2, No Man's Sky, Doom 2016, and Wolfenstein 2 proved that a lot of the then "current generation" titles might have been able to run on 7th generation systems. Tales of Beseria had a PS3 version in Japan but only a PS4 version in the West. The majority of third party exclusive software on PS4 could have been done on various other systems. People hold onto exclusives as if they are still unique pieces of software that only one system can pull off. The days of unique hardware are over. Exclusives are just properties own by a console manufacturer or a deal made with a third party. 99% of the software out there can be played on almost any device. "There are no exclusives out for my preferred piece of metal and plastic, so now I have wasted my money." "I guess I can buy another piece of metal and plastic for the same price or more than I already paid." It is not like there are various options out on the market. There are only four places to go, Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, or PC. PC has access to a lot, but you could need to configure your settings before playing a game properly. Nintendo doesn't get some games the other companies do. Xbox is also on PC. Sony is doing the traditional console approach.

You can easily stay on PS5/PS5 PRO for additional 4+- years (~8 years total!), because majority of the games will be crossgen as it happened with PS4->PS5. And it'll be happening even MORE because game dev cycles getting bigger and bigger, 5-6 years to produce one big game. By that time you can also jump straight to PS6 PRO which will be released around that time frame. Additionaly, you can't turn much profit with new installbase, consisted of 5-10 million users. Because main revenue is made during the time when game is selling at full price. And, to be honest, looking at the diminishing returns of nowadays graphics and stuff, you don't lose much. Devs should concentrate on making an interesting GAMEplay first and foremost, rather than graphics. But I understand that it's easier for publishers to sell games to masses this way, which is sad reality we are living in. I think, speaking of a visual aspect of the videogames, the main thing here is art style. Great art style is the king, it can make game amazing even with the lack of tech complexity and budget.

The way I see things, the console market is going to end up like the smartphone market. There will be a new current model that will cost a bomb (PS5 pro, the PS6 and so forth) and that will be the more cutting edge stuff, but there will always be a cheaper alternative in the form of previous gen consoles that can still do a lot of the same stuff - all while the software will remain backwards compatible. Since the PS4 has a similar architecture to current gen games, and can still run most of them - then why not keep it around for the PS6 generation? Can imagine it would play less games but it would still sell well to casual audiences. The problem with the slow output for games, is not about the number of games, but particular games that we want or games from particular studios that we want are taking too long. In other words, it is about our favourite games or game studios. The over ten year wait between The Elder Scrolls and Fallout games for example. Or the 8-10 years between Ratchet and Clank games.

Backwards compatibility is a feature that should’ve been in the base PS5, and added sometime into the PS4’s lifecycle. There’s no excuse for the feature’s exclusion since hobbyists in their spare time were able to get PS3 emulation working on PC, and restored online functionality/added it to some games that didn’t have it before (I’ve been playing Resistance, the older Ratchet and Clanks, and a few others through RPCS3 and having a blast. Such a shame Sony abandoned so many of their old IPs). Certain Nintendo systems are backwards compatible, the current Xbox models are backwards compatible with a good chunk of the library (if you pay $20 for dev mode you can install emulators going up to the Wii/PS2 on your device, and load up a bunch of ROMs. If you want a great emulation machine I’d suggest buying a used Series S. I’ve heard talks about people being able to port over RPCS3, but haven’t seen anything concrete), and the original PS3 was backwards compatible with PS1/2 games.

@arseheadrpcnofficialАй бұрын
If this is not possible then why won't sony just not do the same 6 games over and over again and revive some of their old pre ps4 ips?
@shreksnow1918Ай бұрын
@kirby21-xz4rx In the past PS3 emulation was garbage because of the cell processing. Now aside from a few audio/visual glitches and slowdown in a few areas it’s really good. The games play super well. You can also use any controller with it, and I recently bought a PS5 controller for a more “authentic” experience, and because games like Killzone 2 have mandatory motion controls that can prevent you from beating the game (still need to first finish the Resistance trilogy. Then I’ll move onto Killzone). This is all done by people unaffiliated with Sony who are working for free (there’s definitely people who get money through Patreon, and I have no issues with them doing that as long as they aren’t hiding builds/features behind a paywall). What Sony should do is either work with the community to get the emulator working on PS4/5 (in dev mode you can add emulators to the Series X/S. As long as Sony’s OS for PS4/5 is t something really weird it should be possible to get emulators running on their hardware. Hopefully, people who jailbreak their consoles will be able to figure that out). Or at the very least just make collections of their old games ported to PS4/5 and PC, like the PS2 collections that were made for PS3.

Optical discs are going away. For music, movies, and computer software they’re already obsolescent due to the mass market preferring streaming or downloading music, movies, software etc. That means the drives and disc manufacturing is going to become more expensive. Discs are increasingly just tradable licences now as games launch with huge day one patches, or are at least significantly improved within the first few months. And every bought used disc is zero money for the developer or platform holder, so it’s inevitable that PlayStation and everyone else will eventually migrate to digital only.

I mean… if they can integrate some FPUs in the CPU architecture, they could practically natively support PS3 Cell processor reliant games. The only thing that would be necessary aside from the necessary microcode to display graphics correctly, is to make sure that the lasers have the ability to read all the different color discs. I think that with Vita and PSP UMD support, the physical support would be unlikely to see the light of day, but emulation via a service like Nintendo’s Virtual console, tied into PS Plus, would be great!

I have been dreaming of a PlayStation that is just fully backwards compatible with all gens
@CruxicsАй бұрын
1) PS3 SOC, not needed. One more hardware generation and it should be stupid easy to emulate a PS3 compared to 13 years ago. They are certainly getting there. 2) CD laser is a myth. They could easily read a CD in the PS5 if they just refocused the lens and laser. Blue light is a narrower beam, but that doesn't mean that it can't fit the grooves of a wider red beam of DVD or CD. Which is exactly what it is doing now for modern DVD playback. With a bit of work they could do the same for UMD. I wouldn't mind if the UMD drive was an accessory we hooked up to a USB port on a PS6/7/X Anniversary Edition. So the whole library could be played.

I’m finding that more people are preferring to go to PC this generation even if it’s more expensive. They love the ability to upscale their games beyond what the PS5 can do and will gladly pay to do that. I’ve also found that many PC gamers also use aftermarket parts which are cheaper then retail and also “know a guy” that they can use to get a great PC built for cheap. When I was watching "The Road to PS5," I was excited to see that home game consoles will finally come with SSDs as standard! Compared to HDDs, the loading speed will be 100 times faster! (Some game developers also commented on Twitter about the expectations and sound of SSDs.) However, even though it has been almost five years since the announcement, only a limited number of first-party developers are still gradually unleashing the capabilities of the PS5. (In particular, Insomniac Games has consistently delivered well-balanced works at a high level.) I understand that game development takes a lot of time and money, but in my opinion, the results are not what we expected. I thought that each first-party would come out with a title that would make us think, "This is the power of the PS5!" a little earlier... What do you think is the reason for the delay? 1. Are they avoiding PS5-specific design in order to smoothly release the PC version after the PS5 version is released? 2. Because the game engine is still from the previous generation or an upgraded version of it? 3. Is it simply taking time?

If consoles are going to become all digital, it's crucial going forward that they be backwards compatible and essentially PCs. I'm not going to spend $1000 of dollars on digital games only to get to play and have access to them on that specific system. There's no excuse to simply just consider them "PlayStation" games and they work on all models. That's the big benefit to PC to me. I can play games from the 80s, 90s and the future with my current build. It's all one platform. The lines are beginning to blur and digital really has hurt consoles in a lot of ways.

"PC-Like" is a misnomer. The only thing "PC-Like" about PS4 and PS5 is the fact that they have x86 architecture CPUs. So code that runs exclusively on the CPU will compile the same as on PC, but everything else is still radically different from the other console-specific hardware to the programming API used for Sony's graphic library. I'd argue that Xbox is honestly closer to PC because of DirectX, but those devices still use a unified memory pool where as PC does not. Each platform has different device drivers for very specific hardware, so you're more-or-less programming for the driver. This is why porting between console and PC is still not as 1:1 as some people might think.

Me after reading the title: I’m already pretty hopeful for the future, but wow me Ryan. Me after watching the video: That did absolutely nothing to change my opinion on the outlook one way or the other. This was a bunch of hopeful wishes that it’s entirely impossible for none of those to happen. On top of that 90% of this hopefulness is around nostalgia for old games. Nothing is stopping you from playing those old games now. Would it be convenient to have them play on a newer console? Sure, but it’s such a minor plus for many and highly relies on the IMO highly unlikelihood of PS6 even offering a disc drive. The only old games that could be argued is the more recent old games that need a day one patch to either not be broken or playable at all, but their servers are down and the patches can’t be downloaded. Do you think a magical PS6 that is backwards compatible will solve that? The servers would still have to up to get those patches, if not for that they’ll be just as unplayable on new hardware as they are on the original. IMO this title is either nonsense clickbait OR It’s mistitled and should be called “The outlook for video game preservation may be better than you think.” Because it’s far more about video game preservation than being specific to PlayStation.

The problem with the commentary on consoles, specifically the PS consoles is that there is a increase in the effort to find fault in the console model as a way to justify purchases made for PC or other platforms. Sony and PS have been really smart with thier platform moves and is really playing 4d chess with the social media space when it comes to how they've positioned the console and the brand. As it stands, the PS5 and PS5 pro represent the best for price to performance in the mid range segment of the hardware spectrum. What this has done is place Sony and PS brand as the midpoint of the gaming heirachy. If Nintendo is seen as the gateway into gaming, then PS is the next logical evolution of that before one delves into the deep waters of high end PC gaming. What Sony has done over the last 2 generations is create an insular layer of sticky products and services that are designed to keep players in thier ecosystem. Prior to this generation of consoles players might look to PC toward mid range hardware as a way to upgrade thier experience and this generation that is no longer necessary....now if you own a base PS5, becuase of digital libraries and the optional disk drive....a PS5 pro is gonna to vastly beat out any mid tier PC on price to performance, PSVR2 makes it so that you don't ever need to leave the platform for VR except for platform specific exclusive games (which are less prevelant than PSVR2 exclusives), and the Portal satisfies the desire for a handheld without the falling into the trap of more expensive niche hardware and reduced performance in games being that most expect to play thier existing libraries instead of dedicated handheld games. Its all strategically placed to keep players in the PS ecosystem as there are very few reasons to advance beyond what PS offers even if their overall vision has yet to come into focus for players. What is lost on this community is that outside of the social media space, Sony has amassed a huge segment of the gaming market and thier goal is to keep that market share and grow it. They accomplish this by retaining players in their ecosystem but also building pathways for people to settle into thier platform. Gone are the days of the transient players of consoles...now Sony is positioned for the long term of capturing players over a lifetime rather than for a generation.

I have been a gamer since the Sega Master Sytem / NES era and have seen some incredible technological leaps and transitions which were quite exciting up to the Xbox 360 / PS3 era. Nothing really beats going from SNES to PS1. PS4 was still good, Xbox completely lost it with their XBone consoles and here we are. What an absolute shemozzel the state of gaming is these days with the lack of current gen specific content, games being held back to suit the specs of XBox S series consoles etc. After watching this I really think I will Skip PS5 altogether and see what happens with PS6. If that console is backwards compatible with the generations that you are hoping it would be, it's potentially good investment. As for Xbox, never again. I don't need another door stop around the house. Hopefully Nintendo's Switch 2 offers some alternative options. That could shape up to be a smooth fun console if it runs everything at 4K 60fps.
