In terms of expansion past stage 3, one idea that the city seems to be exploring is an at-grade LRT that would go down Carling Avenue between Lincoln fields and Carling Station on Line 2. It was featured, along with the three LRT stages, on a map the city produced back in 2013 called “Rapid Transit and Transit Priority Network - Ultimate Network”. Also, one minor correction: Fallowfield train station is in Barrhaven, not Riverside South.
@mikejulien23304 жыл бұрын
That was actually one of the original proposals for stage 2 and is not currently being considered now that lines 1&3 are planned to tunnel under the Byron linear park. It is however one of the reasons for the trains we use, as they specked to be able to use this option if it was selected for stage 2. Issues with operating without grade separation would make the Carling option unfeasible.

Nice summary. Would like to see detailed map of the expanded line going west to Moodie in relation to where the line crosses streets.
@RMTransit4 жыл бұрын
As would I, I don't expect any actual road crossings at the moment
@mikejulien23304 жыл бұрын
There will be no grade crossings. Extension will follow existing transit way to Dominion where it will tunnel under NCC land, under Richmond rd. and cut and cover tunnel under the Byron linear Park to Lincoln. From there it will follow existing transit way to baseline and another small tunnel north of the 417 to replace the transit way from Pinecrest to Moodie going under or over the 417 on-ramps as needed.

What I don't get is if OC is going to have such a long expansion that breaks off in two directions, why would they not simplify it and make the southern branch its own line?
@Absolute_Zero74 жыл бұрын
Perhaps long term they might do that. I think though that the demand for transit in Barrhaven is not that big so they can afford to split up the amount of trains that get serviced so that there are less connections needed to reach Downtown.
@mikejulien23304 жыл бұрын
The line to B-haven will be its own line. It’s just a semantics issue. The confederation line expansion will be split into 2 interlined routes(use same tracks and platforms for much of the route but diverge at Lincoln Fields), lines 1 & 3, and Trillium expansion will be split into 2 as well, lines 2 & 4. Unfortunately those planning the marketing of these have not done a great job of messaging out the distinction between “Line” referring to the rail system(ie. Confederation Line and Trillium Line) and Line referring to route(Line 1-4)...

They have been trying for years but the city removed track connecting to the bridge so nothing can cross now. This has made it difficult to get investors. Some believe they don't have interest in connecting to Gatineau since they wouldn't be able to collect taxes on homes created on the Gatineau side where as they can on their own side. Light rail projects tend to cause real estate booms where ever they go.
@Kishanth.J3 жыл бұрын
after some research i now think that MOOSE rail should never be a thing. On thier site thay want Ottawa to abandon the LRT and return to the 2018 bus system and give all tracks to them. Their plan is to make stations outside of the town they want to connect, like Ariprior snd Smith Falls, and create new suburbs by sellinf land near thier train stations a increased market value. Is Line 2 be electerfied? How many different cars are we going to have on all lines?
@drdewott91544 жыл бұрын
Line 2 is currently diesel operation only as it uses European style Regional Diesel trains. The Flirt trains coming in the future will also be diesel but if the need arises to electrify the line, converting these would be easy as it's diesel motors are located entirely in a middle car, generating electricity to power the traction motors on the wheel. An electric converstion would require little more than simply removing the diesel motor car and mounting a pantograph (The structure on top of a train connecting it to the wire). And Line 2 currently operate 2 car trains of approximately 40 meters long but the Flirt trains are gonna be about twice as long so about 80-85 meters. This also means that 2 of the current Alstom trains can operate together should the need arise for it. And The Confederation line (line 1) is quite different considering it uses Interurban Streetcar vehicles but Each set on that line is 4 cars long and they currently operate with 2 sets on each train so currently the trains there are 8 cars long, but these cars are much smaller and shorter than those on the Trillium line (line 2)
@hayttom3 жыл бұрын
@@drdewott9154 I know your facts are right but the decisions have been terrible. There is no good reason that the whole system is not electrified. (Pantographs can cope with low wires under Dow's Lake.) Just like the uselessly low-floor 'trams', this is another bad case of the vehicles defining the system.
@drdewott91543 жыл бұрын
@@hayttom Yeah true I mean trains like the Lints are not very well suited for rapid urban rail. As a resident all I can say is Ottawa’s LRT is a failed mess. Our buses are overcrowded so good luck trying to get to work on time. Then the trains usually have mechanical failure so you might be lucky to get one which is now also overcrowded as overcrowded buses feed in to the LRT hub stations. The underground stations smell of rotten eggs and human excrement. Usually the escalators and elevators are out of service and it’s a long, slow line of people up the stairs and out the door. I was excited for LRT but the service has been a colossal failure, and the bus service which was already inadequate keeps getting slashed as the trains were intended to pick up the slack. However as I said the trains have a problem operating on any day that ends in Y. Thankfully with the pandemic I can work from home, my commute is much more reasonable now.
