The future of robotics requires robotic agents that can not only see, hear and understand the world around them but can also act upon that knowledge. This is the vision of the Robot Lab at the University of Surrey’s Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP).
CVSSP is the UK’s top computer vision lab, with decades of experience and over 150 researchers today, while the Robot Lab is a rapidly growing group sat squarely at the intersection of computer vision, AI and robotics predominantly focused on developing the state-of-the-art in Robotic Perception. Researchers are working on everything from visual navigation to event cameras, depth estimation to bird’s eye view estimation.
The work of the Robot Lab is based on a design philosophy that doesn’t just treat AI as a black box for robotics, or build AI for undetermined robotic application - but develop core AI architectures and algorithms alongside robotic applications together from the ground up. This work is exemplified by work in reflexive robotics - with the aim to have robots react almost instinctively and cut down reaction times.
Designing AI that can better help humans is essential to the work the Lab is doing, and this is supported by their central role within the Surrey Institute for People-Centred AI. This role allows the team to collaborate with researchers in a wide variety of disciplines, from health to tourism, agriculture and more - ensuring the work of the Robot Lab to build AI that allows robots to not only sense but interact with much-needed real-world applications.
As well as a vibrant set of research projects within the Lab, the group are also having an impact on the industry, with alumni and collaborators working on the algorithms that will power the robots of tomorrow. With rapid growth and the push from software to building their own hardware, the Robot Lab at CVSSP is a world leader in Robotic Perception and an essential collaborator for AI and Robotics experts around the world.
