THE FUTURE OF SMASH?

What is the future of smash? According to students at the University of Chicago, it's something that resembles a human rights violation!
Thanks to Crumple and Vidrocker for sharing their stories here. It's a quick piece going over some of the most creative side brackets currently being played in Smash. Was going to be part of a larger video project, but I felt like spinning it off on its own.

I think instead of being disqualified, breaking any rule distributes an electric shock to the player. It wouldn't get anyone banned, but it would just break their spirit.

Bogus rules, equal unfun, unengaging gameplay, because people *will* work the system for easy wins and it'll result in a tourney who's legacy can only survive off it's own hubris as an afterthought. There's a reason competitive rulesets are as restrictive to gameplay as they are in certain areas and not others. Restrictive rulesets can be fun when implemented right, but in other cases, it's really the TO's call of crafting rules only they find fun due to skill issues.

I love that in Smash, a game franchise with a thriving scene mocked by people outside of it for being the "least" fun way to play it, the winner of this fucked up hell tournament designed to make it "more fun" was the one who found a way to STILL get into people's heads despite everything else derided as cheap being forbidden. I ran the x-treme ruleset for a local event one time and we did not notice the handwashing rule and had people going random who accepted that they may get a banned character and instantly lose. Was a good time

My favourite smash mode is to play with instadrop on in ultimate. It makes your fastfall super fast and puts a hitbox and landing hitbox on it Its a movement option, a combo extender, a combo breaker, a tech-chasing option, a zoning tool. Its amazing. You can act with it and out of it instantly like a regular fast fall which makes the game super technical and high APM. Things like instadrop footstool are crazy and just dropping with a hitbox covers loads of space I want it to have a tournament to see the meta develop

Instadrop + Impact Run spirits with Giant and Tail modifiers in Special Smash is my favorite casual way to play, lol. Me and my friends created a meta with it. Ux's Yungle Yam.

I'm assuming this ruleset is an offshoot of the old Brawl Club email that was like in the late 00s or early 2010s which had similar rules to this one. My favourite rule was that when a smash ball appeared the game would then pause, and players would RPS to see who got to use the smash ball. You could not attack until the winner breaks and uses the smash ball. Also when joining the club, you couldn't play at all for the first 3 sessions you attended. And when you pick a character you had to stick with it the entire time you were in the club.

If you lose a set without winning a game, you're automatically out of the tournament. If you win a set without losing a game, you're highly recommended to take a shower for being a sweaty tryhard shame on you. Gamers can take up to 3 in-game screenshots during a set, while their character is actionable. If the set comes down to the last game, instead of playing it out, a jury takes a look at the set's screenshots and scores them on the Mohs' scale. Winner is determined by the highest total score. No warming up or practicing in the 24h before the tournament's start, this prohibition continues until the end of tournament. For it is unfair towards gamers who have no opportunity to do so. If a player requests it, they may switch controllers with their opponent for the duration of the set. This is to ensure no one brings an unfairly advantageous controller. Sending out more than 6 different pokemon during a set will cause an automatic DQ.

I like the no warming up one. Would be fun to watch like a summit style tournament where instead of the concept being "wow this venue is all top players they can just grind endlessly" you put all the top players in an enclosed place where they have no ability to grind. Actually this is starting to sound like a squid game....

I ran the UChicago Melee scene back in 2011-2014, and we would run tournaments with experimental rulesets. 2-stock matches was my favorite (Bo5 sets, with Bo7 for top 4). Quadruple elimination was a huge pain in the ass to run. This makes me so happy to see! Glad to see the experimentation is alive and well.

Hopefully the future of smash is the Tekken guy convincing Sakurai the game doesn't have to be boring and crippled off cool meele mechanics, so the next game would be meele 2 "everyone is here" edition, except steve, hopefully microsoft pulls out of the deal and takes all of their thrash ip's away.
