IMO he was top 10 -12 , the 90s was stacked with great Shooting Guards that overlapped from the late 80s and early 2000s ,,,,Houston had the smooth medium speed pace with good foot work ,handles to complement his text book shooting form, he was the poster child for the 2spot in the late 90s til 2003 with his accuracy and grace on the court.

I remember when the Knicks were shopping for a SG and were looking at both Houston and Reggie Miller. Miller, who had killed the Knicks previously were the fan's choice but I really wanted Houston. I knew Miller, who was 31 at the time, had reached his ceiling, but with Houston we werent sure where that ceilong was because he was outstanding during his last season in Detroit. I loved Houston in NY. No, he never became the high volume scorer that people predicted he could become but he was a very good #2 scorer who hit some of the most clutch shots for the team in my lifetime. He's one of those rare guys who will never have to buy his own drink in NYC.

Love Houston, but he was Khris Middleton of the 90s. I don't think he was a "disappointment," the Knicks just had unrealistic expectations & in typical Knick fashion, gave him a bad contract, not to mention the injuries that hampered his already average athleticism. It's a shame we couldn't keep Spreewell or have a healthy McDyess along with Houston, things would've been very different.

Ewing went to one NBA final as well...is he a disappointment? Allan Houston was not flamboyant and aggressive as a Latrell Sprewell or even John Starks, people wanted him to be a "New Yorker". Watching him and hearing people perspective of him, I just knew they were looking for something different from him just because he played most of his career in New York. I had so many arguments with my family, uncles, schoolmates about the fact that he was enough, he was great, just mellow, a bit subdued in his personality. I stand by the underdog because to see them win and flourish is the greatest thing of all... and Allan Houston did just that. At guard 6'6 from Tennessee, No. 20... Allan Houston
@bjnt9223 жыл бұрын
One of the best shooters in the league during the 90s. I think the injuries combined with ginormous expectations the New York media put on him because of his contract kept him from being even better that what he was. On a side note Tennessee and UConn have to be the only schools where the women’s basketball team is more popular than the men’s team even though both men’s programs at both schools have produced great pros. Maybe consider doing a stunted growth on Chamique Holdsclaw?

Houston was basically a straight jumpshooter who for most of his career had just enough bounce to shoot over most defenders. He had to shoot over them because he didn't have the quickness to beat people off the dribble or create tons of space for himself. He didn't run screens like Reggie Miller or have a post up game like MJ. Most of his shots came off a series of jab fakes and his offensive game was easy to read as a defender. Check any footage of him. Majority of his shots were off iso and well covered with a hand in his face. It's a testament to his sheer shooting ability that he's able to average 20 points on what are mostly tough, well-defended jumpshots. Problem is, a taller, athletic defender (think Tracy McGrady) that can block/bother his shot would straight up shut him down, as he didn't have a secondary go-to skill. And that doomed him eventually once that knee surgery robbed him of what little athleticism he had. By 2004/2005 he could no longer get his shot up over anyone and was effectively done. In today's game, he might still have had value as a spot up 3-point specialist.

I was born in Seattle in 1973. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I read that, in the summer of 1994, Detroit "was tempted" to send Allan Houston, Mark Macon, "and a draft pick" to Portland, for Harvey Grant! That was after Harvey Grant was a disappointment in Portland. And then, all Allan Houston wound up doing the following season, was shooting 44% from three-point range, 85% from the line, and putting up very nice scoring numbers....Plus, Portland needed a 2 guard, after trading away Clyde Drexler later that season. What a great "heir apparent" Allan Houston would have been for the Blazers!
