My late mother in law bought a nice looking car through a county auction in Georgia - her brother in law went with her to keep her 'out of trouble'. Great looking car - bad motor "it just needs a tuneup". Shill bidder kept driving the price up until her brother in law put a stop to the shenanigans. Still, he fell for the 'it just needs a tuneup' ruse. Sold 'as is', car barely made it back to Florida where it was promptly parked. Diagnosed as 'engine damaged due to 'running low on oil and overheating'. Car was sold for pennies to a mechanic. A very nice looking 3 yo car with moderate miles. 1982 Olds Delta 88 Brougham with the 260 ci motor.

I thought they had to cut the check back to the owner to make it up to the minimum amount? So he should of only payed 700 and they gave him the check for 4,300 right? Cause he sold it and they needed to make it up to the minimum bid?
@abigalanderson7494 Жыл бұрын
My math totals $300 owed. 4k to meet 90k reserve. Subtract the 4k from 4300k = $300 but you are on the right track.
@f0r3v3r_ Жыл бұрын
He bid $86,000, but as the buyer owes a 5% fee to BAT for the sale. That means the buyer owes $90,300 for the vehicle. Then BAT would give the seller their $90,000 and collect the remaining $300 as their fee. Since the owner is the seller and bought it from themselves, they received no money, but owe the 5% fee to BAT anyway. Because there is no real buyer in the equation there is no $90,000 and thus he owes $4,300 for making the bid that won. That $4,300 would have been the new owner's problem. It isn't that he doesn't pay and magically gets money. It's pretty simple, TBH.

I’m curious to know how Bring a trailer charged his card if Doug was the one listing the car???
@MichaelOnYourSix Жыл бұрын
The buyer pays the fee, not the seller. So, like in his example. If a car is listed reserve at 105k, but bidding only goes to 100k, the 5% fee brings the total to 105k, which meets reserve price. Car is marked sold, and buyer is charged 105k. In this example BaT doesn't make a single cent for their services, they do it as a courtesy to keep vehicles moving through auction and not failing to sell.

@SeattleSteelLLC Жыл бұрын
Your math is wrong. If the winning bid was 86k and with BaT 5%, the buyer pays 90,300. The seller then receives his 90k reserve. The seller and buyer being the same person would only be out of pocket $300. BaT ripped this guy off.
@Dan-du4tc Жыл бұрын
You would be correct, except for the fact that Doug mentioned that he called BAT and told them what happened and said to keep the “entire amount” (i.e. the 5% commission rather than just the $300) because he didn’t want to get banned from BAT himself if/when they found out.
@switchcars Жыл бұрын
no, my ethics are correct. In order for me to get the $4k check from BaT, I would have to be complicit in this whole endeavor.

He only would have been out $300 though, right? Since BaT would have given him back $4000 to meet the difference between 86k and the 90k reserve.
@jebeda Жыл бұрын
I think how it is supposed to work is that the buyer is charged $86,000 + 5% (86000+ 86000*05)= $90,300 and then the seller is given their reserve price ($90,000), so BAT would only net $300 for this type of sale. Maybe if they had kept quiet and sent in a cheque for $90,300, the "shill" would have eventually been sent the cheque for $90,000. Because BAT found out about it they probably just charged him for the 5% commission as a fine. The 5% commission may well have been less than any taxes or transfer fees or commissions that Doug would charge that would have needed to have been paid in order to do a "legitimate" sale.
@switchcars Жыл бұрын
Good question. In order for the seller (us) to receive the $4k delta, we have to confirm with BaT that the buyer paid for the car and a sale took place. That didn't happen, and I wasn't about to lie to BaT.

There’s gotta be a way to stop these bidders driving things up. I’d say make all accounts get verified with banking info. One acct per address. And then all bidders should be watched for suspicious activity and accounts that do that should be banned. At least make people goto decent lengths to stop it, but it won’t happen because most companies profit off it. And most car collectors like cars going up in value.
@GenXPertChannel Жыл бұрын
Easy for you to tell the company to go to great lengths and expense to do what, exactly? It's an auction, you don't have to bid. in the end, unless someone screws up and buys their own car, the final bidders are people spending the amount they are comfortable with.
@Mark-vn7et Жыл бұрын
