The main differences were that the Empire emphasized on a stable, secure World and Government dominated and controlled through fear and military might whereas the First Order's approach were a lot more aggressive in seizing free worlds and putting it under their control. This could be because the Empire (Palpatine) took an already existing Government organisation (Republic) and remodeled it into an Autocratic Empire, expanding and emphasizing on keeping them in check through military power. Whereas the First Order started from nothing and had to attack and conquer free worlds from scratch hence the more aggressive approach AND they didn't have a Master who was already a prominent figure / leader in the Republic like Palpatine to manipulate the government into reorganizing it. In particular after the end of the Empire's terrors, the New Republic will never agree to forming an Empire again giving absolute control and power to 1 man (Emperor).

What I get from this is that the FO just controlled their conquered planets or systems and made sure they weren’t invaded but didn’t really govern it or have regulations. They just had it and made sure they weren’t attacked, while the Empire governed their planets making sure they abided by Imperial law and acted more as a police force.

Also in the last star wars episode they released a few days ago,(not going to spoil anything huge but) the First Order had a HUGEEE FLEET and I’m not talking 10 to 30 Start destroyers........I’m talking THOUSANDS...with billions yes....BILLIONS of Tiefighters and other fighter aircraft. Gabriel Tejada The First order is pretty different though. Nearly all sith related navy structure had a triangle like ship, the old republic era, and the post Empire era, this holds true. And the concept of stealing kids and forcing them to be soldiers is interesting. And the soldiers uniforms is different enough to be cool. But the Resistance..eh. They went lazy on them. The new republic had like 30 some years and you mean to tell me, they didn't invent any military improvements? A new blaster was about it.

Additionally to the other replies; the First Order relied HEAVILY on droids to make up for the lack of construction staff, maintenance workers, et cetera. They likely had millions of droids taking care of labor tasks. Even their battlecruisers were "staffed" by droids, so they could keep their officers and troopers focused.

@Carlos Andujar The First Order has officers such as Hux and Kylo Ren who are too emotional, the use of screaming orders shows a lack of self confidence in their own ability to command, the scene which shows Snoke openly undermining the authority General Hux by knocking him down with the force does not help since and it only serves to undermine the authority of officers in front of people who are supposed to respect his authority which in turn harms the image of the commanding officers among the troops, it also shows that Snoke is terrible excuse of a "Supreme Leader", doing this also damages the efficiency and the command structure of the First Order which is sorely in need of a solid rules and organised structure which we see in the Galactic Empire's forces, rules denote structure, structure denotes stability. An empire with that kind of well enforced stability is scary, that is also in essence something which people should fear. The First Order lacks these things entirely, it makes one feel like it's being governed by a bunch of kids with no chaperone. The audience has to see the First Order as intimidating and powerful however the execution we have seen so far does not convey this to us. Grand Moff Tarkin shows a more suitable, direct and effective approach to command, he was very calm while giving orders and he never screamed, this shows that he is very confident in his authority and ability to command, he also intimidates Leia by using the intimidation tactic of stepping in her space while keeping that calm tone of voice, he's scarier than Hux. Vader on the had a much more effective approach to punishing officers, he simply killed officers which failed important tasks through a quick force choke, it's not a smooth approach but it gets the point across in an effective manner.

Hexterguard99 The disadvantages of the Empire are first, they have citizens....they have to maintain their cities and that cost trillions.....while the First Order is a private military, and can invest trillions in training troops, constructing farrrrrr more Start Destroyers..(in episode 9 they had the largest fleet in the whole Star Wars Saga ever.....), can construct more fighter craft, and build new weapons, and can invest far more in research and tech. The Empires stromtroopers a beyond the most poorly trained troops compared to First Order ones....the First Order storm troopers aren’t that good either but they fight better, and are more coordinated from just seeing The Force awakens.....the pilots of the First Order are also more deadly and took out alottt of resistance fighter craft in just ONE episode. While Empiral pilots are fish in a barrel easily getting shot down, they just don’t survive. The Empire relies on bounty hunters to catch their crucial enemies whereas the First Order sends their elite to catch enemies and even Kylo himself with the Knights of REN . The Empire wasn’t as feared by people, as the First Order was.....people where terrified of the First Order. The First Order where more close to complete domination, than the Empire was if your all caught up with the saga you wouldn’t deny that..... the Empire favored strength over loyalty.....whereas the First Order favors Loyalty over strength.....which can be better.... When survivors of the Empire went into hiding for three decades and amassed a HUGE military they revealed themselves to the Republic and crippled it, from this info we can already tell the First Order isnt a joke...... The First Order having a disadvantage in number against the Empire but has better technology. But we cannot know a real winner if the two were to go to war...which they can’t because they are obviously different eras but, we cannot go and say the First Order would be crush.....we have only three episodes of the, and will not get anymore.....it’s a bit unfair..... but ONE THING we know for sure...is that it will be the largest and bloodiest battle in Star Wars ever, especially the ground battles...they would be massive.

EMPIRE:Trash Aim THE FIRST ORDER: still trash aim

To be fair, the First Order did seem to fight by proxy more than the Empire did, through drug cartels and terror groups. And they waited until the Republic disarmed itself, was sympathetic to the First Order, and was weak before they attacked. I guess this is why Kylo Ren wanted a clone army. They could still be doing things the General Hux way, have his project of kidnapping and raising from birth, it shouldn't be completely dissolved.....but Kylo Ren wanting a clone army now makes sense. They just need the numbers, dude. Also, with clones they could alter and experiment on them to make even deadlier super soldiers. It would be cool if Ren made test tube soldiers that would be the First Order's version of Halo's Spartans, Toy Story's Space Rangers (not toys, the soldier design), and Warhammer's Space Marines, as well as Fallout's BOS Power Armor for people who are experienced fighters but getting older. Perhaps these would be based on the Dark Trooper projects. Hell, one thing that could have helped compensate for the First Order's lack of numbers was if they had finally mastered the Black Wing Virus and RakGhoul plague. They would be able to make small enclaves of obstacles for the Resistance when they dropped the Zombie viruses on random villages or camps. Although a shambling Zombie won't replace a guy with a blaster, it's still something the good guys would have to spend money and man power on trying to get through. So it would be something if the First Order knew how to sneak in Zombie viruses on other planets to cause chaos. If nothing else, it would be a distraction to the good guys and whittle down their morale and resources. It would be especially messed up if the First Order combined those plagues with nanotechnology, so that specialized officers with neuro implants could control the zombies psychically when they were in range. To further enhance this, the First Order could also have a cyber version of this, as in something that would cause all the droids in an area to rebel and attack any humans. Again, a neuro linked officer could directly control them if nearby. But it would mainly be so that the good guys would have to drill through legions of zombies, ghouls, and malfunctioning droids while the First Order made it's escape. Could it conquer the galaxy? No. But it would sure help with conquering a weak planet, and even if it didn't work, it would sure be a resource draining obstacle for the resistance to have to blast through. From what I understand, the resistance was trying to get an army of droids to do the logistics part of it's work. This hacking would severely cripple it. Esp if the zombie virus affected animals and the cyber virus also affected a lot of the vehicles and ships. One thing they could have very easily done to make the First Order slightly more powerful and considerably more individual was to base it off of Ralph McQuarrie's storm troopers from THE Star Wars. These Storm Troopers seemed bigger, bulkier, more competent, and some had light sabres. It didn't mean they could all use the force, but it did mean they had that ability. They had CIS style flying motorcycles and hover tanks. Lucas considered the idea that the Storm trooper armor grew with the storm trooper. Not only would that go with the First Order idea of raising a storm trooper from birth, but it would also go with the idea that the First Order salvaged some Biotechnology from the Legend's Yuuzan Vong war. This could lead to giving, at least some, of the Storm troopers a more organic and Ralph McQuarrie look. Ironically it was said that the First ORder was partially inspired by Ralph McQuarrie. It would also fit in with the spirit of Canon Lore. The First Order said that it wanted a leaner, meaner, Galactic Empire, that it wanted to avoid the Empire's mistakes but emulate it's successes, and ditto with the Republic and Jedi. The idea of raising soldiers from Birth was borrowed from the practices of the Jedi Knights and Clone Troopers. The Jedi Knights by themselves weren't the best strategists and generals on the battle field because their fighting style belonged on a medieval battle field. Oh, the Jedi kicked ass on the battle field when it came to fighting enemies, but for strategy the Galactic Empire had a better idea with the Officers on both the ships and the ground communicating strategies to one another. So the First Order should go all the way. It should train force sensitive troopers to use the force, at least in ways that serve the military mission. They should put more experience force sensitives to work alongside the First Order Officers, having the best of both Republic and Imperial. The Force Sensitive children that get recruited to become storm troopers would still go through storm trooper training, but they would eventually be sent for special training to have their force abilities serve the First Order, hence why you would see Storm Troopers (and officers) with light sabres. Some Storm Troopers and Officers with lightsabres wouldn't even be force sensitive, but they would cross train with the force sensitives to know how to use said light sabre as a back up weapon (the same way we used both swords and guns in Revolutionary and Civil war). Perhaps the FO would have some kind of implant in the Force Sensitives so that they could only use their powers when a superior officer game them permission (missions and training), and if said force sensitives rebelled their superior would press a button that would automatically kill the force sensitive subordinate (micro chip explodes or releases toxin). The FO would not only be more dangerous if the utilized Kylo's Clone idea, but also utilized force sensitives, Zombie/Droid viruses, and salvaged Yuuzon Vong bio-technology.

Yeah... they weren't. If anything, First Order lost a lot of troops after TLJ. They were desperate for stealing more children during the events of TROS. Not sure why you're even mentioning Palpatine here... his Sith Eternal was a separate faction, and even it had less troops than the First Order. All it had was a bunch of Star Destroyers (which were mainly controlled using AI, as the Sith didn't have enough manpower to operate them all).

It's hard to tell. From what I have seen in the movies, FO officers are exceptionally young. However, that Hux is in charge kind of exemplifies the problem, the FO values fanaticism over actual competence. This is all well and good when you are oppressing your own people, but when fighting an experienced foe like the Resistance, you see competent old guard like Canady on the dreadnought getting killed because his superior officer would rather gloat and be told yo' mama jokes then scramble the fighters. Unfortunately, the only real officers we have seen are Hux, Kylo, Phasma, and Canady. Of them, Canady seemed the only semi-competent one, and he was a former imperial. However, I completely agree that the soldiers are miles ahead of the empire, and I would be interested in seeing how they would compare against the Clone Troopers who were likewise raised from birth to fight.

Too bad the movies never tell you who the First Order is lol. From that opening scene of Episode 7 I saw them as a direct parallel to ISIS, just these rogue nihilist maniacs storming villages and planets as the most radical form of the Imperial ideology possible, much like how ISIS was considered too radical by other jihad groups. While the Empire claimed order and security, the First Order brings chaos and terrorism (I mean both used terrorism for sure). Snoke is Baghdadi, just some little-heard-of guy who comes out of nowhere but was in the background waiting to strike, and he wants to bring back the glory of a bygone Empire, like the Caliphate. Made sense considering the movie came out in 2015 when ISIS was at large.

The First Order is much weaker than the Empire. 1 hundred thousand is nothing compared to a few hundred trillion (ball park figures there). The only time they seemed strong to me was when they had Starkiller base. And that wasn't through numbers or control, but simply because they had the best weapon at the time. Don't forget the Resistance was not the New Republic's army, but Leia's personal militia, so they too were much smaller than the Empire and also less than the First Order. Basically this new war is about two small armies chasing each other about in the New Republic which lost its army and leadership in Ep7.

I never said they weren't, but they were still a separate faction at the end of the day. Especially with Kylo as Supreme Leader. Palps even threatened to attack Kylo's First Order at one point if he didn't listen to him. Seeing how much stronger the Sith fleet was to the First Order fleet, Kylo knew he'd be screwed if he didn't follow through. Not to mention the First Order in general weren't too big on joining Palpatine's Sith Fleet/Final Order (as we saw from the boardroom scene). Only Pryde was good with the idea, since he was a Palpatine fanatic.

Star Wars needed to be reintroduced to the mew generation with something familiar while still bringing back the old. Force Awakens like it or not focused more on character instead of worldbuilding. It does lead to some problems though like the lack of clarification of the state of the galaxy. But with The Last Jedi which really changed a lot, anything could be up on the table. The First Order is as unstable as ever and the way they take control and rule is definitely going to be vastly different than to the Empire. The New Rebellion has a lot of potential too, with all the possible allies being hinted at. Hopefully JJ makes due with his promise to unite all 3 eras.
