"Young players may come and old players may go but there will never be another like the gallant John Joe"
@cabhan3 жыл бұрын
john joe o'reilly was my great great uncle, it still stuns me that there isn't just this song, but numerous songs about someone i am related to. i'm named after the county he lead to all-ireland glory twice. i think they're building him a statue in cavan town which is insane. i've never been to ireland, i've lived down under for my whole life, but whenever i do go i can't imagine how surreal it will be seeing a statue of my ancestor in the place of which i was named after

It's now 73 years since he died. Very few people remember him now but we're still remembering him anyway. A great player; a great leader; a great man. I'm not a Cavan man, but I can see why they're proud of him.

God bless Cornafean and all in it...the best Club of all time. 20 senior championships in 50 years. Man at centre back on the team of the millennium. For such a small parish to produce footballers capable of winning 20 senior championships is remarkable.

John Joe O Reilly made it at center half back, to the list of the greatest Gaelic football players of the last century. John Joe O Reilly played when Cavan were the unrivalled aristocrats of Ulster, and the best team in Ireland of that era. John Joe O Reilly captained the winning Cavan against Kerry in the Polo grounds, in New York in 1947 in what famously became known as the Star Spangled All Ireland. The All Ireland was played New Year that year to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the worst year of the Great famine in 1847. The 1947 game was arranged in a somewhat clandestine manner, the South of Ireland has not yet declared a Republic, as a result strategic ports were still under British control. The late great Michael O Hehir regarded the 1947 all Ireland as his greatest commentary ever.

I had the privilege to be coached and given lifts to training by the great Columba McDyre after he returned to Kilrane from his time working in Cavan. The skill he learned playing mid-field Cavan in 1947 & 48 winning 2 all Ireland were put to good use, back in his native county ……he took Naomh Conaill from poor junior team to competitive team senior team in the Donegal championship. His influence and skill, still live on in both Naoimh Conaill and Donegal under the influence of our great Jim McGuinness. I never saw him play but legend has it, that he could ‘out jump anyone in midfield and land with the ball, facing the other opposite direction. A true legend of Glenties GAA and a absolute gentleman 🔵⚪️

I used to work in the West Cork Model Railway Village. The same set of songs always played in the background. This was one of them. I hadn't heard it since I stopped working there.

Great player - my grandfather scored 3 points against Cavan in the 1942 Ulster Final in Dundalk. Down were beat 26 - 6. The Down team arrived 2 hrs before kick off and all got drunk except two Pioneers (one being my grandfather). He said John Joe O’Reilly had thighs on him like tree trunks!!
