Elden Ring deserves GOTY solely because it has a game-to-cutscene ratio of 95% gameplay to 5% cutscenes instead of Ragnarok's 30% gameplay to 70% cutscenes. The ideal ratio would be 80% gameplay and 20% cutscenes. Elden Ring is much closer to that, so Elden Ring wins.

God of war does have lots of linear parts, but there’s entire sections of the game that you would never go to, or experience without taking a few minutes to do a side quest, walk around, or get materials. It’s much more of an open game then what is presented.

I haven't played it yet but that's what I've been hearing a lot about from Ragnarok. Is it even more open exploration than the 2018 game? Cause even that game had way more exploration than any of the past games. I was incredibly impressed with the exploration and rpg elements in the 2018 game since non of the past games ever had any of that. So if Ragnarok has even more of that, then I completely disagree with Wood saying the game is incredibly linear.

Geoff Keighley has acknowledged most just watch the Game Awards just for world premieres. It's nice that he tries to show respect and reverence to industry folks since so many give the devs and VAs a hard time, but alot of that goes out the window when he has to roll off like 3 awards after a Shick Hydrobot ad to prep a new trailer for Wolverine on ps5. The musical acts are usually really good tho.

No doubt that Elden Ring has an absolutely incredible soundtrack, but seems like a weird comparison between its Final Battle and God of War's Ragnarok, literally the most climactic and cinematic pieces from the entire soundtrack, and then Li Garte Prison Camp, an innocuous and low-key area theme. I think Weight of Life or Homecoming would have been better choices for comparison.

As someone who never had an interest in either Souls likes and Ragnarok I can safely say the reason Elden Ring is going to win is because it made people like me actually interested in playing it and I put about 300 hours into it and had a great time. Where as for ragnarok I watched a bit of game play for it and immediately was turned off the game cause it looked repetitive and linear. Not saying its a bad game but open world beautiful games like Elden Ring never come along like that game did and it presented itself so well that it really does deserve the spot.

As someone who completed the game for the first time earlier this year I would also be very interested in it. I'm wondering what his thoughts are on improvements of some things he critiqued XC2 for, but the most important for me would be if he mentions the music atleast once. I say this because of 2 things. The first being that he didn't mention it whatsoever in his XC:DE review, and the second being his insane bias towards Elden Ring, or secret hate towards the Xenoblade series in Best Score

Most of the fun times I had was wandering off the path of the compass and just stumbling upon a mini-boss that felt like a gut check or a puzzle that felt like a nice calm break after the combat. Played both Elden ring and gowr, loved them both, actually dropped off Elden ring right before the final boss but still spent dozens of hours in the game. I think it deserves all the accolades and probably should win goty, but it’s gowr for me personally. Even after getting massive spoilers (thanks KZbin algorithm), the story still hit like a truck and I actually did love the exploration. It’s “corridors” but I loved exploring the branching paths, some of which open to enormous optional areas and even the return visits after new unlocks.

@The Leaprachaun But Elden Ring is poor. Its just an open world Dark Souls and introduces almost nothing entirely new when compared to previous From Software games... At this point, having played every Souls game (including old and remake of Demons Souls) through endless times until I hit max level and collected every item, beat every boss etc. I'm now fed up of this Souls formula. Combat is the same. Controls almost identical apart from being able to jump. Even the lore is very similar to the Souls games. Elden Ring for me, isn't even in the top 5 games of the year. GoW? Now that game is a serious masterpiece but, it's only as good as it is because 2018 GoW set it up to be. You need to have played both through to completion to truly appreciate how much of a masterpiece Ragnarok actually is. Even more so if you played through all previous GoWs too!!!

For me it's Xenoblade 3 in all nominated categories! Not just because 3 is such a good game. But this nomination finally gives Xenoblade a chance to shine on a big stage. It deserves to be there. The developers put their soul into the franchise and you can feel it in all 4 games. The other games are way bigger so there is no chance Xenoblade will win but I am just happy for monolith soft to be included on a stage with the biggest studios out there!

Love the Xenoblade series and (almost done) with 3. While I think it's great and I'm happy it's here, I think it might be the weakest in the franchise. I have yet to complete X either but, I find each entry is the best at something(s) except 3 is just really good in most of it's categories. I dunno, I'm looking forward to Monolithsoft doing a new IP before returning to the Xeno world.

Saying that god of War is not free to explore means you did something wrong. I had much issues with choosing between gow and Elden Ring. But gow has so many places to explore so many secrets and open areas it just rocks. You can open 2 additionaly big parts of the map in vanahaim and alfheim that have nothing to do with plot and just go have fun. It has great story, characters and is so Full of emotion. It still makes me wanna Cry because of how spoiler spoiler spoiler. And I did platinim in both games so I know them well.

Like I did a good amount of side quests during the story and I’m done with story and have only completed 35% of the game. I think some people misunderstand the whole explore thing. There is a clear difference between "directed" and "freeform" exploration. GoW uses the directed method, where the majority of players will have the option to do additional content that is mostly placed in their way so as not to miss it completely, whereas Elden Ring (for example) mainly uses the freeform method, which requires players diverge from the main path in order to actively find something that could have easily been missed. Design philosophy is completely different for these games and studios. Santa Monica wants to deliver a story first and foremost, which requires the majority of players to not get lost or wander off, so they can experience the payoff before becoming disinterested. Whereas From Software is not concerned if players do not reach the end of their game, since the payoff they are trying to deliver is an immersive experience where some gamers may find areas that others completely missed. Also, directed exploration typically depends on singular correct paths and invisible walls to push the game forward, with additional use of what I call "treasure dead-ends", whereas freeform exploration will allow for accessing content in multiple ways, such as finding a back entrance or jumping over a wall, and very seldom uses any invisible walls to discourage going "out of bounds". The sense of finding something hidden is typically stronger than the choice of doing something extra that was more obvious, which may be what Wood means by simply saying "not as explorable", and avoiding making an essay out of it, lol! Every time Wood said God of War doesn’t let you explore, it hurt me a little, Ragnarok actually does a lot to encourage you to explore, the side quests are the best from any game I’ve ever played, and along with the rewards you receive from the side quests, the dialogue and lore you’re fed whilst you do them are incredibly valuable and thicken the game’s story overall, and this weird idea that open world games immediately have an edge over linear games needs to stop, that kind of mindset is how we get mindless imitations of other games that changed to be more open just for the fact that open world games are really popular at the moment, Sonic Frontiers and Pokemon Scarlett/Violet come to mind…

Alright, overall a good video, but after having played God of War Ragnarök, Elden Ring and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 within 2 months, the immense bias for Best Score receives a dislike from me. I know you guys, and probably also Wood, don't care for my dislike, but you can't disagree with me that the bias he holds for Elden Ring is WAY too high. For God of War he picks the main theme, for Elden Ring he grabs the Radagon theme, a more epic reorchestration of the main theme, but for Xenoblade Chronicles 3 he picks the music of a world area? I have a feeling that Wood isn't much of a music guy, but of all the music that plays in XC3 he picks the Li Garte Prison Camp? Instead of listening to maybe 5 of the most popular ones, he just searched for a random OST. So it is either that Wood holds immense bias for Elden Ring, or (And I even rewatched his XC:DE review before this) he just holds some kind of hatred towards the Xenoblade series for some reason. Just my opinion, but I was devastated with the new OST...Legends Arceus felt like it had the BEST soundtrack in the entire series, and then SV comes along and has battle themes that are just slightly more intense versions of monotonous area themes There's still some great tracks...I just didn't really vibe as much with the music this year

For me, I was really ready for Elden Ring to be the Souls game that I finally got into and it is the most I have gotten into one. But I've spent more time watching lore videos because of how awesome it is compared to playing the game. I think I just have open world fatigue. That's why God of War: Ragnarok is my GOTY. And I think it depends on what you're looking for. Wood obviously places a huge emphasis on exploration over linearity which I get. But Ragnarok made me tear up multiple times through the story it told. Combat is more fleshed out and deeper than 2018 and the performances are the best in the industry. Elden Ring will 100% win at the Game Awards and it's well-deserved, just not for me.

@@azureknight729 I think you're misunderstanding what Wood was saying. I haven't beaten Ragnarok yet, but it's certainly more linear than the last game, yet they both have a great story to follow. Personally I'm glad it's a bit more linear, just cuz I have so many games I wanna play, so I don't wanna sink a bunch of hours into everything. Anyway, what I understood is that he finds Ragnarok more polished and with a better story overall. Yet Horizon, while not being *as* good, had the benefit of an open exploration, which he personally enjoyed more. Obviously open world does not automatically mean better.

Not gonna lie, the fact that Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is even nominated for GotY is enough; I didn't think it'd be seen in that light, since it's such a niche series. I know it won't win, given it's going against Elden Ring, God of War, and Horizon; as well as it being an JRPG, which I'm pretty sure has never won at a Game Awards ceremony. It's obvious that Elden Ring will win most of it's categories and GotY, in my opinion, just such a solid game and did much for the Open World genre and the Souls series to date. Personally, I really want Elden Ring to win, to show that innovating for an oversaturated/stale genre isn't hard, and to take risks.

Personally, GOTY 2022 for me is God of War Ragnarök!⚡️ It is an absolute masterpiece!⚡️ Also, God of War does have a lot of exploration for a game that is supposed to be a mostly linear experience. You just have to indulge in the side quests and you’ll find some huge areas in almost every realm that you wouldn’t have ever seen if you would’ve just rushed through the main story. Those areas have hard work put into them too.

@@MythicAce218 Yeah the main game I want Fromsoft to make is a DS1 remake where everything up to O and S is basically the same(maybe not Capra demon) except the mechanics and graphics are the same as DS3. For the end game I think they should re work everything to what they originally intended it to be as it's obvious they were rushed in the end game on the original.

Elden ring because it was such a joy to explore this world. I played horizon too but in this game there was no sense of wonder and discovery because it tells you exactly where everything is and what reward you'll get from completing the quests. In elden ring you never knew what would happen next and this was such a great experience :)
