I was the only dude in my hood listening to him and people liked him but considered him to be a comedic rapper. I can agree that him being white plays a part, but he recognizes that as well. His music can relate to many who are struggling mentally or with drug etc. Imagine if many "hood" artists started to sing about things that can reach a larger audience. Other black and other ethnicities have done quite well such as Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey etc etc. Rap is no different people like JCole, Kendrick Lamar etc. Why can't we just break down what makes other artists more attractable then the game.
