I work in an active silver mine. Stay out. There is nothing interesting down there. Whoever dug the abandoned mine stopped working it for a reason. If you want to look for gold, do it on the surface. I pan for gold on the surface as a hobby and it's way more fun to immediately see the gold as a shiny metal. If there is gold in a mine, it usually doesn't look like much until the ore has passed through a complex refinement process. In abandoned mines, there is nothing down there but water, rats, bats, and poison gas. This guy is lucky (?) he didn't die. Even outside of the mine, the game sounded pretty stupid at this point. I remember in high school my psychology teacher told the class about the time his friends died while exploring abandoned mines in Virginia City, Nevada. Normally he and his friends would explore these caves and mines together but that day he still had papers to grade or something so he didn't go with. Everything was fine when the two men entered the shaft but when they made their way back, that's when things got bad. While they were walking they had disturbed the air in the shaft, causing the dangerous carbon monoxide gas to "break loose" and mix in with the rest of the air in the shaft. (I'm not sure how else to describe this part). The men quickly realized what was wrong and made a run for the entrance, however one of the men collapsed and the other man ran back to help him. Unable to help him, the other man tried to run out but it was already too late. He collapsed and died a couple feet away from the entrance. When officials reached the mine, one of the officials saw how close the man had been to the entrance and decided to walk in. He only made it a couple of feet inside before collapsing and having to be dragged out, that's how bad the gas was. Anyways the moral of the story is, don't go into abandoned caves or mine shafts because you will die.
@cyruskhalvati2 жыл бұрын
Basically the gas seperated out by density, as pulp would from orange juice. Them walking through the cave was enough to start an air current. The gas got mixed. And they were fucked.

I've spent more time underground in abandoned mines than most people have spent outside. There is a list of gear that is REQUIRED to be safe inside of a mine. A bump cap/climbing helmet with multi-point chin strap. Head lamp, with plenty of extra batteries. Handheld flashlight, with extra batteries. Heavy duty harness. Multiple 60M lengths of climbing rope fastened to a secure anchor point outside of the mine, or near the winze/shaft/decline you're rappelling down. Enough carabiners to hang a tank. Multiple Ascenders. A fall limiter. Heavy closed toed boots. A backpack with 3 days of food, water, and painkillers as well as an IFAK. Impact gloves. Long, heavy duty trousers. Heavy duty shirt or blouse. Pulse oximeter. Oxygen meter. Multigas detector and/or Geiger counter if you're in a Uranium mine. Most importantly, multiple people and radios. If you fall, you can still reach someone on a line of sight radio. That person can reach someone else over a line of sight network of handhelds or even a cross-band repeater, and someone else can start the rescue. All of the aforementioned gear is meant to prevent a fall and rescue, or to help you survive in the event that you need rescuing. Preparedness is the only way to survive in abandoned mines. Otherwise, you're just setting yourself up to become the next Susan Powell. If you're not extremely experienced in caving, rappelling, roping, mountaineering, and even Search and Rescue/First aid don't enter mines. I have certifications upon certifications upon certifications that give me the confidence and ability to safely navigate mines with relative ease. I only enter mines with a real purpose, such as recovery of artifacts, people, or prospecting. If you don't have a real reason to go into the mine, maybe don't go into the mine.
@markgohl26604 жыл бұрын
I have many years of caving experience and I would not enter a mine. Too many safety issues I have no experience of. They are very different from most cave systems. As for people with no experience at all ........ well that one too often does not end well.
@philconey114 жыл бұрын
@@markgohl2660 mines are less likely to cause injury to an experienced caver than caves are. Mines are designed not to collapse and are built within structural limitations. Caves are eroding naturally, which means lots and lots of water and delamination, as well as lots of slipping hazards and stuck hazards. I've found mines to be safer and easier to navigate than caves.

Having been part of a group of people who delved in to abandoned mines in our youth (and other really stupid things) I can confirm that it is horribly dangerous; We were deep in one working that had been abandoned about a hundred years earlier and the mine floor was covered with slabs of rock that had peeled off of the roof. Walking over this broken terrain and I nearly fell in to a winze (vertical shaft) to a level that we did not know where the adit (horizontal entrance) was at. At the bottom was a pile of broken and rusty iron machinery that would of impaled anyone who fell in. We had plenty of lights, wore helmets, pads, gloves, and worked as a team, but still, it was insane what we did in the 1980's.

I remember one who was a young woman, she was the high school valedictorian, beautiful, talented, athletic etc. She was in a MVA with her friends and suffered a head injury. She seemed to make a tremendous recovery, was discharged from the ICU in a month. I ran into her father about a year later and asked how she was doing? His answer has always haunted me. He said “she doing well, but she’s not the same person.” I had a friend who ran into a column refereeing a basketball game. The goal was orienteering, and every so often there were checkpoints that would grade you on how conspicuous you were as you approached, encouraging a stealthy progress with minimal light. After one checkpoint, my group misread the next direction on the sheet and ambled straight towards a quarry entrance. Fortunately, although the quarry was closed for the night it wasn't abandoned, and the warning sign at the (wide open) entrance was well-illuminated. We realised we must have made a mistake and backtracked to the checkpoint, re-read the directions and went on our way along the correct route. @@mikshinee87 "This is the only reason artists make so much money". The music industry isn't as easy or glamorous as you think it is. The amount of people actually have the ability to make good music is miniscule. There's a reason it's called "art": It's an art form, with techniques and conventions you have to master just to something halfway decent. Even if a musician is as sharp as a brick, you still have to recognize the skill it takes to master that art. The same goes for other specialty fields. It's not rare, it's human nature. You can be sharp in one field, and completely numb-skulled in others. Knowing the sciences doesn't make you an expert at navigating the world or human interaction, it makes you an expert in a specific field of applied knowledge. Otherwise every IT Specialist would be a CEO. You don't make your point any stronger by downplaying the effort that's required in other fields that you don't like as much as the sciences. Crazy how the game grew from its beginnings! Also stay out of old out-of-service mines! They are abandoned for a reason. It's not like a mining company lost money and ditched it. They aren't like an abandoned building, which are often times abandoned due to a financial reason. Oh no, mines are abandoned because all the precious metal was mined OR it became too unsafe. In many cases its both...the precious metals remaining could no longer be safely mined. I wish people knew the nature on why mines become abandoned. It really is for totally different reasons than other abandoned sites. You see those questions about "what's a good piece of life advice?" This is one. Abandoned buildings and such are one thing to explore. But abandoned mines are absolutely off-limits. I'd explore Chernobyl before I'd explore an old deserted mine. Not even kidding.

Worse than a cave, an abandoned mine has unique hazards and unlike caves that are often stable if they've been there a long time, abandoned mines may have deteriorated supports which also release toxic gas as they rot (caves can also have bad air though to be fair), and wooden "false floors" that are rotted through but still are covered in dirt or rubble, hiding (even if you have a proper light) the fact that you're really about to suffer Bob's fate if you step there and fall through into the shaft below. They can and should be explored by experts to document the history or even prospect in some cases, but I'll stick to the tours in ones guaranteed to be safe. Of course same with caves for me, but I'd like to try some beginner spelunking at some point. I have a hard time with the organizers' choice to use this mine too, after being warned. It ultimately lead to the ambiguity, confusion, and misplaced trust that cost Bob so dearly.

In mining areas there are often hundreds and even thousands of adits, open stopes, inclines, and shafts, of which very few are covered or have warning signs. Most abandoned mines in the western U.S. aren't mapped, and aren't even known about unless you dig through old geological reports from 100+ years ago. States have bureaus of mining that place warning signs and put bat-safe covers on mine entrances, but as someone who used to explore mines in Colorado... they can really only do so much when hundreds of thousands of abandoned mines exist. It doesn't help either that they're often in remote or extremely difficult to access regions, like the mines in CO which often had entrances above 13,000ft - getting equipment and personnel to those locations often exceeds the budgets of those institutions. tl;dr, most western states don't care enough about abandoned mining hazards and those that do have too many mines to deal with.

They were told to go into a mine, the team just didn't make sure that there was only one entrance. So yea I'd sue. Plus the game control team was warned not to use the caves.

I’m from Vegas and I remember the story from decades ago. To walk into a mind without a flashlight or proper equipment or clothing is ludicrous. No amount of money is worth your life.

The game coordinators are to blame for even considering the location.... but it takes someone with a supreme lack of common sense to walk into an abandoned mine in complete darkness. I don’t have much sympathy for Bob...unfortunate that he ended up with such profound disabilities but come on man... what were you thinking
@Hirohitorunguard3 жыл бұрын
I've been in a mine as a kid as part of a tour with my family and even though that mine had been made safe I still just think back on those memories as I could have gotten lost just by turning around in the pitch black darkness. I can't imagine what kind of lunatic would actually venture into a mine, and an abandoned one to boot.

What a shame. It started out as a fun game then a bunch of wealthy assholes took it over and turned it into a dangerous, inaccessible mess that regular people couldn’t enjoy anymore anyway. It was inevitable that something terrible like that was going to happen.

This is crazy. An arranged or seemingly arranged game situation messes with people's common sense. Someone's logical conclusions can be completely inverted by their expectations of the arranged game. Player's choices should lead to success or failure by definition of the game's goal, but not death.
