Games that make respectful representation of Asian culture (BM: Wukong, Ghosts of Tsushima) - gets attacked, called sexism or with controversies. Games that are actually full of cultural appropriation (AC Shadows), made by much worse and more sexist studio (Ubisoft) - praised for "beautiful world". I'm all for workplace ethics and representations, I even understand some of the issues with Feng Ji that he is unhinged and unaware he's a public figure and put all those vulgarities on public space - but to be fair, he isn't directing it towards anyone or any group (unlike the recent tweet by Elon Musk). Bearing that in mind, after the patch when I went back to record for this video, I noticed I was able to get more of a bearing on where I was. Being one of the four great classical Chinese novels, it's poetic language and philosophical nuances may seem boring on surface, but it's actually super fun to read (ngl I preferred it over Shakespeare, no shade to Shakespeare). This game paid heavy homage to the original 1986 TV adaptation (ex. soundtracks, the overall visual look of wukong), if there's an uncut version available on YT I'd recommend you to watch, plus the guy who plays Wukong is undoubtedly the most iconic version that effected all subsequent versions of MK. when that trailer dropped, I lowkey got emotional since Wukong was such a huge part of my childhood. and this game added it's own twist on the story while keeping the charm and personality that made the original series so special.

I was really scared that it was going to be a big shiny 差不多 job. Glad that my fears were unfounded! I'll hold my hands up and admit that despite my general familiarity with Journey to the West, the overwhelming reception to this game originally made me think that the positivity was astroturfed. I'd say that once I arrived in Yellow Wind Ridge, I had this "oh" moment when I realized how enormous the game was going to be. And the game literally never stopped getting better from there. Even the dreaded Pagoda Realm felt very intentional in its misery. I started the game feeling like they were just going to cram references to everything, as if cameos are enough for audiences. And they probably would have been satisfying enough. But the sheer intentionality behind almost every single aspect of this game was breathtaking. Literally no stone unturned, except for that stupid narrow bridge in chapter 4 with those hanging pods knocking the Destined One into the void and forcing me to reset, lol. I mean it. Literally the only bug I encountered the entire game. There are areas in the actual gameplay where I did find it a teensy bit underwhelming; the combat was very streamlined but there were things I would have done differently. Also, I really don't mind the invisible wall device, but it needs to be supported by telegraphing the environmental design better to help players intuit it better. And yes, the Valley of Ecstasy in Chapter 3 is just a little samey. All tiny things though, and I give this game the biggest ever pass because 游戏科学 spent so much time making the little details fit together so harmoniously. The game just felt kind of "right" the whole way through. Supreme Artistry. Also, subbed.

@@bkschatzki I'll be honest, before seeing the first gameplay trailer, the only thing I knew about Sun Wukong was that he was the inspiration for Goku from DBZ. Then after the trailer I looked up the story, the book and the legacy and I was generally intrigued. Then the game came out and I was blown away by how passionately it was designed. This game really became one of those games that I'll look back at in a few years and think "wow I was there when it launched". I highly doubt no one on their team made it past Chapter 2. Game journalists these days often use sneaky wording to mislead, thinking they can avoid responsibility by saying things like, "Well, technically, it wasn't a lie... I was only referring to the first two chapters." The same goes for that notorious IGN article, where they used phrases like "called out," "accused of," and "allegedly" or something to the same effect regarding Game Science, while never technically claiming those accusations were true. They're so accustomed to telling lies without technically lying, and delusional enough to believe they’ve outsmarted the public.

I love playing this game. The combat is fun, even I died so many times fighting Tiger Vanguard, but I enjoy a good fight. We can also change the sparks to deploy different tactics and attack modes, which also keep fresh in control. The art, music, animation, cutscenes and story line are extremely good, epic. It talks about human natures, greedy, obession, free wills. I just don't understand why the journalist didn't realise those values that the game trys to deliver. Did they really play through the games before they write an article? Invisible wall or a mini map in ch.3 are problems they need to think about. I can accept no map, but invisible wall is a bit annoying and reduced some creative play in the game.

Black myth wukong is honestly soulsborne in a transcended form. My favorite game is still bloodborne, elden ring all ds are at the same level but this game has dialed everything exactly correctly. Its challenging at times but never too time consuming, fight is exactly blend of mind and action, game length is exactly perfect, you get so much but dont feel too tedious (looking at you elden ring), lore is as deep as it needs to be, visual, sound and effects are mesmerizing, Fighting options are varied through combo so as long as you are creative there are many different play style, that is not depended on "this sword is str, this sword is agi, this one is int" just everything came together so perfectly.
