Max continues his journey through all the Street Fighter games, moving on to easily the most successful of them all and the game that truly kickstarted the franchise, Street Fighter 2! With an updated roster, gorgeous graphics, and an updated control scheme, it's no wonder that we would inevitably get about thirty more versions of this game over the next twenty years!

My favorite fact about SF2 is that combos were originally a glitch. It was left in because the developers liked what it did for gameplay and made it a feature. The greatest accident to ever happen for fighting games ever.

@@conradojavier7547ust like SF1, no combos and just punches, kicks, and the grapple. Combos really separated the "button-mashers" to the truly skilled ones. That's why SF2's "accident" is monumental: it basically became the standard of fighting genre in video games we see now.

Top five not to undersell it but games like Half Life GTA 3 and Ocorina of Time didn't just define genres of games but videogames as a medium not to say Street Fighter 2 isn't an important game every fighting game is a decedent of Street Fighter 2 but that's strictly fighting games not to say I don't see or respect argument I just disagree and feel under that narrow other perview other games edge it out

@@addex1236 While those games you mentioned are surely influential (though Doom came before Half life), GTA3 and Ocarina of time fall in a similar category of going over head to fully 3D... so on a list of influential games, a fighting game genre should definitely make the top 3 to have variety in that list. I mean while Ocarina of Time was a masterpiece of a game, Mario 64 had already veered into the 3D realm with responsive controls. So they only had to follow suit.

I remember those days back in the early 90’s. I was 10 years old when street fighter 2 hit the arcade. There was Two Asian brothers that new stuff before anyone else did they where awesome playing it and I wasted so many quarters day after day for years but that’s how I got great playing against them in my eyes they were legends. Those two brothers owned everyone who played them myself included. Till one day I got good enough to beat one of them it was one game of course but I was on cloud 9 for the rest of my teenage life. After I beat him he did a special move with Guile and froze the screen and left. I never seen anything like that before. Street fighter was and will always be my favorite fighting game ever!!!

Just letting people experience Final Fight and then they get to play on the Metro City stage with all the homages is cool enough, but having a 1 coin High Score Ranked ladder is a whole different level of cool. On the World Warrior Cabinet you could do a thing we called the "invisible throw" with Guile that made the game freeze. I used to stay at a friends sometimes on weekends and his local shop had a World Warrior cabinet. He and a bunch of the other local kids would glitch the game over and over again to anger the shop keeper who was having to come out and reset it. He kept doing it tho, knowing those kids kept putting in more money to glitch it.

Even as someone who has always kinda been on the fringe, as far as awareness/fandom of Street Fighter stuff (likes I played a bit of SF2 way back when, but didn't get into Street Fighter properly until 5 after the SF6 Juri trailer dropped), I could always appreciate the importance of Street Fighter 2 to the genre and video games on the whole. I learned *some* of the glitches back when I was messing around with WW in MAME and on Callus (for those that remember back that far) the only thing I never figured out was the magic throw, could totally do all the others though. definitely familiar with desk's breakdowns, nice of them to confirm what we all secretly knew that the CPU was downright cheating! There were several different revisions of the original SF2, and most of the glitches were patched out after the first one. If you find a classic, non-CE SF2 cabinet somewhere, the Guile freeze/handcuff/magic throw will probably not work. You can see this if you try it on MAME. You have to specify which specific ROM you want to run, and there are like 7 or so. Again, not Champion Edition, not Hyper Fighting, not Rainbow Edition, I mean 7-odd versions of plain Street Fighter II. As a kid, the Guile glitches were kind of a legend. I'd heard of them but never actually seen them in action. Part of that's because arcade operators were usually pretty diligent in keeping the ROMs up to date, so by the time I actually had money to play SF2 in the arcade, none of the machines still had the glitches.

I don't think people who weren't born (or too young) when SF2 came out realize how CRAZY everybody was about this game. It was THE game every 16bit console owner had to buy. There was no "I'm not a big fan of fighting games", if you had a SNES or a Mega Drive, you had to buy SF2. No modern game comes to my mind if I try to find one that an overwhelming majority of gamers would consider absolutely unavoidable no matter your preferences are if you own a system able to run it.

It's still kind of insane how the most ICONIC fighting game, the one that started it all, not only basically invited fighting games as we know them today by ACCIDENT, but it's also a SEQUEL. Seriously, with how forgotten SF1 is, it almost feels like the 2 in the title shouldn't be there, this really doesn't feel like there was something before it. Not to mention the fact that this sequel alone essentially had its own franchise ala FFVII with stuff like the various revisions, the tv show, the anime, the movie, the animated movie, the merch, ALL branded as "SF2" or at least explicitly based on it.

Just you and your friends enjoying video games, making friends at arcades or meeting your friends’ friends at someone’s house. Just simply enjoying video games together. Playing SFII all the time. But most importantly. Everyone was together in the moment. No one looked at their phone. No one did something else. Everyone in the same space just sharing their love for video games together. This was the birth of the FGC.

SF2 Turbo was one of the few games I owned for the SNES, since I was only allowed a handful. So naturally, I played it a lot. But what would later open my eyes was Alpha 2, that my brother and I borrowed from a friend of his. There was so much more in it and it completely blew me away, being on the same console and nearly same title and all.

Also underrated for the SNES version: the sound is AWESOME, including its different soundtrack
