34:14 This is so funny because Alaska is actually super invested in conservation because one of their biggest exports (other than oil) is fishing and most of the tourism is for nature 😭 and i say this as someone who was born and raised in Alaska

Yes but Alaskans have also been super about exploiting the resources of Alaska too. The state runs on oil. The positions isn't "Despise the environment", it's "Exploit the environment", AKA giving companies rights to drill for oil and mine for minerals. Which makes perfect sense, it's why Alaska votes consistently red and in the late 80s, early 90s it was even more true. The PFD is basically entirely based on oil revenue and environmentalists haven't been able to stop the oil from flowing.
@littelcreatchure5065 сағат бұрын
@@Tinil0 While that is true, they generally also try to go about it in a more "responsible" manner than most. Iirc they blocked a proposition to drill for more oil in the wildlife refuge recently even though it would bring in a lot of money. I don't necessarily think that getting most of the states funding from oil and being in the pocket of fossil fuel companies is *good* but even given those circumstances they generally do a pretty good job preserving the environment. This is of course based on my limited experience so if this is not the case then please enlighten me, but as far as I am aware Alaska has some of the best conservation in the country all things considered

slight correction at 34:46. Donald Trump first Considered Running for President in 1988, and was still fairly popular at that time. So it's not that weird that Donald Grump is in the game.
@Westing-er3fb10 сағат бұрын
Weirder that it says he's "lacking in charisma". Say what you want about him, one thing he's not is uncharismatic. I'm guessing that he's more meant to be a generic businessman candidate than necessarily based on Trump.
@StarkMaximum8 сағат бұрын
@@Westing-er3fb Yeah, it's very likely that all of the candidates are meant to represent different playstyles and backgrounds and they picked a name parodying a famous person of that general vibe. It's not that Donald Grump is specifically the idea of Trump running for president, it's a businessman running for president using Trump as the avatar of that concept.
@HeavyMetalMouse5 сағат бұрын
@@Westing-er3fb Don't forget, this was based on The Don of the early 90s, notably Pre-Apprentice. "Art of the Deal" era Don *was* very much an off-putting sleaze-bag to anyone remotely familiar with him in his home haunts of NY, and about on par with a used-car-salesman to anyone who wasn't actively buying his book. It wasn't really until The Apprentice's ad campaign that 'The Don' really started to develop that reputation for actual business savvy and 'charisma' in any broad sense, by most accounts.
@marleonka.4 сағат бұрын
Especially considering that the portrait looks nothing like him, and the descripton doesnt make a lot of sense either with the "makes serious overtures to enviromentalists", "mix of progressive and conservative" or as mentioned the "lacking in charisma" part. Oh wow, the Trump parody character existing in '92 helps remind people just how far back his reputation goes for those that are too young to remember. And the fact that he used to be a lot more independent in what policies he supported until figuring out that one side would support him and the other wouldn't and going all in. Even then they pegged him as alienating women too!
@Tinil08 сағат бұрын
Oh, I just got to the point where you mentioned him specifically at 34:40. That isn't true Kam, he actually explored running in '88 and started dipping his toes in politics. He backed off when things didn't look so good for him and didn't seriously consider running again until 2000. So in '92 he absolutely was a perfect example for "Business mogul interested in politics". Most Americans outside of New York actually had a neutral to positive opinion of him, though even by then New Yorkers hated him.

Minor correction to what happens in a tie: each state in the House of Representatives gets a single vote, so looking at the total number is misleading. I could try to do the math to see who would likely win in 1992, but that sounds like a needless pain. Also, crazily, the Senate chooses the VP, so no guarantee that they are off the same party. Furthermore, if the House fails to choose the president the VP choice from the Senate thus becomes president and will need to appoint a Vice.

While the Hyper Highway is a great idea in theory, it doesn't leave enough room for parking lots, which use a different formula for their asphalt. We would still be able to achieve the 100% coverage we're striving for, but it would need to be segmented off into different asphalt surfaces.

@@kamsandwich A candidate with nuance and sense! You've won my vote for sure, looking forward to having all of my rights sacrificed in the name of road.
