Drugs, violence and weapons - conditions inside UK prisons are reaching breaking point, with jails in England and Wales at around 99% capacity.
The infamous riots of Strangeways Prison in Manchester left one prison officer dead, plus 147 staff and 47 inmates injured; with substances and corruption rife, how close are we to another full-blown riot in a British jail?
Former Met detective Peter Bleksley is joined by General Secretary of POA Steve Gillan, reformed armed robber and TikTok mentor Paul Simmons, and former prison officer Vanessa Frake to discuss.

Been visiting prisons up and down the country for decades and I was reporting the escalation in violence and availability of drugs in prisons years ago It doesnt help that so many of the officers are every bit as dreadful and dangerous as any of the inmates .. At High Down officers are basically a gang and a dangerous one at that.. In most prisons now, Albanians, Kurds and Muslims dominate and we are seeing heinous crimes and chaotic scenarios daily.. Sexual assaults, attacks with knives and boiling sugar water are administered routinely on a daily basis... Suicides and self harming are at epidemic levels and a particularly disturbing feature of prison life in the UK is the growth of familes being extorted of huge sums of money, in return for their vulnerable children being kept safe ! Many parents recieve short videos of their sons, being sexually assaulted with an implement or savagely beaten and are then asked to pay a weekly sum to ensure the attacks dont continue Make no mistake, there will be a total breakdown and it will look like something from an as yet not written, Mad Max The Sequel

You would make them more violent with your Hitler way of thinking. They are being punished by their freedom being taken away from them. All that you said just creates a hostile environment. The number one problem is the pay cuts they made to the screws. Now you have minimum wage screws that are struggling on shid pay so need to bring drug's into the prison so they can pay their council tax. If they was earning good money in the first place they wouldn't want to risk losing their good paying job. Not to mention the MP's and other higher ups who have shares in these new Mickey Mouse private prisons. It's a business now unfortunately just like how the COVID jab was all about business.

Ban kettles, drinking water tap in each cell set to non scalding temperatures, no cooking facilities , if you dont eat your prison food tough luck. single cells is a must, time to reflect on own behaviour, and not worrying about living with somebody you don't get along with or is a bully is not fair and could be very stressfull on the weaker person, but a laugh for the bully. going into other peoples cell is a no no, association time on landings or yard only, with cameras covering every area high up looking down. Those caught hurting another prisoner goes on a wing with like minded bully's only. Definitely no loud stereos small radio only. Allow in cell learning providing books etc.

The previous jail I was in ,.my cell mate was awful. Sat smoking heroin on the top bunk while I was cold turkey. which was torture for me. But I could of been in with worse. Much worse. Very sensible suggestions . ❤❤❤ Prison worked for me. Did one sentence of 2 years (so did a year) in 2001. Best thing that happened was been sent to that single cell accommodation place where they were big on education, groups, ect . This was a very interesting conversation, great guests. I was in prison 25 years ago. 2 year sentence. I was a full blown addict and very unhealthy when I went in.... Came out clean , healthy and happy and started my clean new life , got a job , my folder full of certificates (including an NVQ) helped. The officers were all great, and the prison did a good job to reform us. Drugs - we all knew that the men's jail's had drugs even then, but in the women's prison I was in - Buckley Hall, it had just been converted from a men's jail when we arrived, only 30 people in the jail when we arrived , so we all got pick of the best jobs, great Governer , I feel extremely lucky to have arrived there at the right time . Sorry I digress , the drug issue... Now we all knew that a very small number of girls got stuff passed on visits ect, but it would be a small amount that they kept very quiet about and would smoke "behind their doors" after bang up. They didn't do methadone in jail back then , it was cold turkey . If the place had been like prisons are NOW , I dread to think what trouble / debts I'd of got myself into if there had been dealets on the wing like there is now. . chilling thought.... No way would i have been able to resist when in full blown smack withdrawals. Prison actually worked for me . I'm don't think it would the way they are now. Dealers on every wing with mobile phones.... Crazy. ... Drug addicts haven't got a hope in hell of getting clean in that environment. Subscribed!! I could also tell you about a bad cop who sexually assaulted me and other addict girls back then .

Can't we get a TV company to go in and do a "60 days in" type experiment. It seems to help jails in the states, and if anyone is serious about fixing prisons, they'd do it. Not sure how the paperwork compares for ease. People would watch it and would help show the problems.

Anyone who has been in prison or.worked in prison.knows the answer to fixing the problem. More staff, multiple housing units where those who program have benifits and education and visits, better food. For those who dont program 24 hour lock down no programs no visits food brought to your cell single man cells. All employees must go through strip search just like a inmate everyday. By a seperate staff that doesnt have contact with corrections officers. These employees must get paid a better wage. Its honestly that simple and everyone who works there knows it.

Expecting prisons to be lawful and a nice place is stupid. It's a place for criminals. We need more prisons and less luxury in them. And we need to make it worth the guards to do their jobs.

Mobile phone signal jamming would solve a lot of these problems at a stroke. Even my local Sainsbury's superstore has no phone signal beyond the point where you go more than a few metres inside the store so the prisons can certainly do this.

Drinks food hygiene because he couldn't eat the cafeteria food for health reasons. So his point is not everyone is using it for drugs. Many do and many dont

They will always find ways to get their needs in . In all honesty a corrupt guard is safer than having families kidnapped so they can get a corrupt guard . They need to separate prisoners by their records , vulnerable in other prisons . A weed offender can do house arrest , work during the day and then back at home right after

So long as the nature of power and control exists, be it from necessity or desire, need or want within man, you will always have corruption at some level, it's been a part of life forever from the highest of stature to the lowest, the question is, when every job has its perks in one way or another, at what point does it become corruption, if not it all from big to small !!
