You know, it wasn’t until I started gardening that I actually get jealous of the rain you all get in other regions 😁 It’s so dry here in SoCal. Sorry to hear about the flooding. Come Spring, all of that soggy land will be lush and green. Your garden looks as beautiful as ever. Thanks for the reminder to pick up more ranunculus 💚

I sowed some 'Aquadulce' broad beans 14 days ago outside - they haven't come through as yet, but it says 14 to 20 days on the packet - I usually start them off in pots or modules but took a chance on direct sowing outdoors this year - I have raised beds so I don't get waterlogging problems. I popped up to my allotment during a break in the rain this afternoon and planted a couple of rows of 'Casablanca' garlic from 2 bulbs of my own I saved from this years garlic. A great video as usual Tanya and you have plenty of growing space at your new house by the looks of it.
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Duncan :) You know, depending on the seed packet, you'll find days until broad bean germination listed at anywhere between 7-21! I'll bet that it takes a little longer outdoors than inside though -- that always seems to be the case when I start seeds. Yay for planting saved garlic! Less cost and you know that the best ones you planted are the ones that did best in YOUR garden.

Lovely to see you start planting in your new beds. I’ve lost my entire crop of broad beans which were shoulder high covered in flowers and pods, first something was climbing and eating the pods then the gales hit, then black spot. So I’m not sure I’ll do Autumn planting again. So disappointing as I had planted more than last year and getting ready for the first early beans….it’s a very wet and cool spring here in Tassie so other plantings are slow. Wonderful news about your lovely book. Keep safe.

An old neighbor of my parents (google KZbin video Bill Monro/hydrogen peroxide) once taught us to use hydrogen peroxide in the garden. I sprinkle a little HP in each hole for my green beans. They usually took 14 days to germinate. With the HP they were up in 2 days! I was amazed. He also used Hp for health. Your gardens look great. Thanks for the info. I've never seen the devils fingers fungi. How cool!
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 2 жыл бұрын
I would not recommend doing this, Mary. There's a lot of misinformation on using hydrogen peroxide in the soil on the internet, and anecdotal stories like you've just shared. First off, it kills soil life if you put it in the soil, just like it kills microbes in skin wounds. It can also be toxic to plants, which is the opposite of what people want to use it for. There's a bit more information on the topic and why to not use it on the popular garden blog, Garden Myths: www.gardenmyths.com/hydrogen-peroxide-garden/

Hi Tanya, first congratulations on your book, I hope it gets selected! I have elephant garlic for the first time but they are no where near as big as yours. Is yours from what you grew or are they ordered from a company? Please tell me if they are so I can check them out next time. We're also settling into a new home (Scottish Borders) and finding the holes we've dug for the apple trees we've ordered are all filling with water and not draining, lots of clay. I'm not sure if you have experience with fruit trees but do you think if we add lots of grit and sand back in with the soil, then plant them higher than ground level, that it will help? Any advice is welcome!

Where do you get the half hoops for the raised garden beds? So are you keeping the garlic in 2 years or will you harvest some this year and some next? I have to plant my elephant garlic 🧄 this fall as well. It’s my first time growing. I tried some regular garlic in containers last year and I’m not sure if it was too wet but it didn’t do much. I got the tinest bulbs you ever did see.

Just a tip; depending on where you live, I would warn against getting the plastic type of hoop-rows that I bought in the UK, while visiting family. I flew home to Singapore (where I lived up until last year,) set up the plastic half-hoops in the ground and the fabric draped over it, pegged in place by some wooden pegs. Came back 24 hours later to do my daily watering; everything was flat on the ground! The half-hoops were still anchored in the ground, but the heat (35 degrees Celsius plus) had softened the plastic so much that they melted flat to the soil! Every single one of them! Hope you don't have heat like I did and they can be of use to you, but figured I'd better warn you, in case you need half-hoops that are made of a material other than plastic, just so you know.
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! The half-hoops are stainless steel and from a UK company that I worked with for two videos. I LOVE their products and it's been such a win to be able to work with them. Bulbs so so expensive where I live but I’d love to be able to plant some. When you said you are using vermiculite for the pot with the bulbs did you mean perlite? You said the bulbs don’t like too much moisture but vermiculite holds onto the water to help retain moisture while perlite helps drainage.
@Lovelygreens
@Lovelygreens 2 жыл бұрын
Vermiculite holds onto water while also adding drainage and structure. They are like hard pieces of sponge that don't waterlog the potting mix. Seems contradictory but it works a treat.
