Thanks for your recent focus on yakon, Steve. I've never looked at growing it before because I dont have enough spare, sunny bed space, but your success at growing them in containers in shade this year means I'm definitely going to have a go next year. I think I'll start with 2 tubers in 35 Litre containers. All the best -Alison

That makes sense Ali, I’m seriously considering only growing in containers as it constrains the size, making them much more manageable : all the best - Steve

Great video Steve, thank you. Could you try using a spade to loosen the yakon. I use a spade when harvesting deep rooted parsnips as the spade has a cushion of soil so the roots don't get damaged. Cheers

By netting, pick a lot more apples, once the birds start, two varieties here in New Zealand the sugar level takes a while to get higher, Braeburn and Granny Smith, they also store well. Lasted from June to October, in a cool bedroom.

I do grow Braeburn, I don’t mind leaving some for the birds though, they have to eat something : all the best - Steve

12:20 Are they yellow beetroot? Do you find yellow varieties grow much slower and less successfully than red? My Burpees Golden didn't grow anywhere near as well as my Boltardy despite being in the same bed.
@SteveRichardsАй бұрын
They grow brilliantly, but they like the warmer weather, what time did you sow/plant them out?
@nitelite78Ай бұрын
@SteveRichards Did two sowings for both golden and red. Sowed some in modules in mid February and I did another sowing in mid June. I'd say the Golden produced less than a quarter of the Boltardy and no large ones like the Boltardy at all for the June sowings. Luckily I prefer the red ones but the Golden ones are such a nice colour so would be nice to have at least a few.

@nitelite78 too early and too late, the best times for burpees golden is April, plant in May : all the best - Steve

Hi Steve, What is Yukon? Is Yukon easy to grow? What kind of soil does Yukon like? How would you describe the flavour of Yukon?
