"And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." In these words we see an opposition between the church and the "gates of hell". A proper understanding of the "gates of hell" will allow us to understand the essence of the sentence. Every room has a gate through which people enter. Likewise, one enters the realm of the dead through death. Hell is the realm of the dead, and the gate of hell is death. "Gates" open, meaning a person dies and enters the realm of the dead, and the "gate" closes behind them. Jesus is not saying that the church will not enter through the "gate," that is, it will not die, but rather that it will enter through the "gates" of hell, die, and then get out and the "gates of hell" will not be able to prevent it from leaving. This is exactly what happened to the Lord. "But God raised Him up, breaking the bonds of death, because it was impossible for it to hold Him." It is only through the resurrection that death can be overcome. That "gates of hell" are used by Jesus in the sense of a gate is confirmed by the words "I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death". It is in the Lord's hands that the keys of the "gates of hell" are held, so He will open them and raise up the сhurch.
