On tonight's show I am messing around with Roland's final rack mount synth, the Integrated-7. Is it still viable in 2022?

I confess. I have a similiar love for rack synth menu diving. I think it is like 99% percent nostalgia. It brings up memories of when I was totally new to synths. Deep menues gives me a feeling of endless possibilities of sounds to explore. It is funny how neurons works in the way it kind of rejuvenates the mind in a time travel like that.

Integra 7 is a good introduction to what we (elder) call expander stack management. Today with daws this technic is lost because younger people first make a track, duplicate track and put sound after on each track with effect. Combining sound first and playing the combination is a very different feeling. You will never buy only one synthesizer and midi was invented to combine sounds . Young people should play more the instruments, than just fidling with a daw.

I've been seriously looking at the Integra-7 for a while now. I started looking at picking up an old module, but research inevitably leads to just forking out for the 7, just like you. It's super overlooked and underrated at the moment because everyone interested in dedicated devices these days.

I initially wasn't impressed by it, until I made an exploration of it's presets and it's specs, like the multitimbrality and part effects. For what it is, I now think it's fine.

The Intégra-7 gives you instant access to Roland’s massive high quality sample library, and all the presets they created for the JV and Fantom series. It sounds amazing. The guitar sounds in particular are fantastic, with natural fingering & fret noises. More disappointing from Roland is that their more recent flagship synths all use a subset of these samples.

I bought an Integra-7 at the start of the first big lockdown here (now 2 years ago) and haven't regretted it. I still use it almost daily. Not every sound is super (and some are really awful), but many are really good or sound really good in combination. While the iOS app may not be the best, at least there is an iOS app available (and there's an unofficial one that is rumored to be much better than the official one). The biggest shame for me is the total lack of an Android app to control the thing. While technically you can edit every parameter on the unit itself, it's quite cumbersome. How Roland can completely neglect so many users (and apparently get away with it) is beyond my understanding. The second shame is that it occasionally has MIDI problems (hanging notes) but Roland doesn't seem to care about bug fixing. Finally, many of the pad sounds (but luckily not all of them) sound a little cold and sterile to me - even though officially these are the same samples as in older Roland rack units, they actually sound a bit different.

The Integra-7 is not as intuitive on the surface as I'd like, but once I dug down into it, I was very impressed with it's flexibility and the vast number of presets, including scads of samples of other synthesizers. It really is ideal for live gigs. The "Live" Roland sounds are great, if also slightly limited in scope, but that's because I'm used to using large sample plugins. I wanted to use sounds in a live setting equivalent to what I have in a modern DAW. I never did find an equivalent by other synth companies. Since I'm not primarily a keyboard player, lately I've been thinking of selling it.

This rack synth is a workhorse. I’ve had one for many years and can get a lot of good sounds out of it especially the Jupiter pads saw, and square waveforms sounds great, organs , however, unfortunately roland abandoned support. The iPad app stopped working with recent years IOS as well as Windows desktop and there was no way to control it outside of the rack, which is very tedious so I was forced to go with zen core, which has many of the same sounds, and serves the same purpose. This is my experience others might have a different situation with PC and IOS set ups, long story short same sounds for a fraction of the price,

The Roland Integra 7 is an ideal piece of equipment for any producer. I would personally reccomend it over an arranger keyboard. Other options worth considering is the Roland SC-88 Pro, SC-8820 or SC-8850 as those also contain loads of Ethnic instrument sounds. VST options include Roland Cloud, Halion 7 ( another really good workstation based on Yamaha Motif sounds and a lot cheaper ) and Kontakt by Native Instruments.

The Integra7 could be a good match to Rolands Fantom workstation. The new ZenCore is a voice hog using up to 8 voices per single key press. I have run out of polyphony on almost everything I have programed, including simple 2 to 4 layers scenes. No PCM editing on the Integra? Weird. My new Fantom won't allow SuperNatural editing, only ZenCore deep subtractive sound design. I think the Roland FA workstation allows SuperNatural editing. So maybe we should match the Fantom with a FA to get full editing and solve polyphony shortages?
@blindjusticeandcommonsense2786

@blindjusticeandcommonsense2786
@blindjusticeandcommonsense2786 Жыл бұрын
@@woodyforrest313 Hmm, that's kinda odd advice. The Integra 7 is Roland's history in a box. It makes sense for some people with some use cases to have one. I agree that if you have a Fantom there is such a large overlap with the Integra that buying one probably does not make a lot of sense unless you have a very specific need for one. Roland have really gone in for the online thing and have worked to tie Fantom users to that online system, That may or may not work for you, If it does then there is much less need for getting an Integra. If you go down the rabbit hole you find that the Zen Core stuff is mostly the same Roland history repackaged and with a different interface. And there are some things in Roland's history that Roland don't want to recycle in the Fantom/Zen Core era. All the SuperNatural stuff is the same tech as before. So if you had a Fantom G (or earlier) there would be plenty of sense in getting the Integra to round out your setup. That and the Fantom G is in some ways better than the current gen of Fantom boards. Worse in others. But it is totally separated from the current Zen Core and online thing. Where your advce doesn't seem to make much sense is that you say current gen Fantom owners should get a Virus Snow. Why? The Virus is old tech which isn't really supported any more. I don't get why you would want to go down that route if you were already into the Fantom and online setup, or wanted to avoid the online stuff and get the Roland history in a standaone box. Can you explain your thinking please?
