The Gear Shed - Petzl Rad System: First Look

Our team recently attended the Big Gear Show and team paddler Nathan Hobbs got a first look at the Petzl RAD System (short for Rescue and Descent System). This system is designed for crevasse rescue and although it hasn’t been rated for water use specifically, the moisture and grit levels in glacial travel are pretty similar to conditions you might experience on the river. Pat from Petzl took the time to walk us through the system and discuss how it works and what it can do. All of the components are easy deployed in less than 1 minute if you have some familiarity with the system.

Will this line work with the Petzl partner pulley? It comes with the original crevasse rescue kit, but not with the RAD kit.

According to the petzl website, the Partner pulley is only rated to a minimum of 7mm line. However I don’t see a reason that it wouldn’t work in an emergency or rescue scenario.

Probably with a Munter hitch, figure 8, ATC or something along those lines.

No, moisture and grit aren't anywhere similar between the two. I personally would much rather have a floating rope for river rescue and many people (including myself) don't like to use Tiblocs, they can damage ropes.

This sounds like it could be a valid criticism.... Ii have no idea myself, but can't Rafting Magazine weigh in on this comment??
