I would love a post-punk course! I gravitated towards the “classic rock” bands i.e., Zeppelin, Who, Stones, during that era, and looking back, I feel that I missed out on some great guitar playing. Im in my 50s now and really enjoy it when you feature Post-Punk pieces.
@sj_-_2 жыл бұрын
Me too. Also in 50s. Easy to find detailed tutorials on classic rock songs and techniques. Less easy to find detailed stuff on indie/alt/post-punk styles and techniques.
@acpg2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I obviously love a lot of the classic rock stuff too. But I think the post-punk period was a fascinating time for the guitar - lots of unique players really trying to push themselves and do something totally different.

I agree I would like to see more as I want to develop a more personal style so it's inspiring to see what other people did who were pushing the guitar in this time

Hello again. I have just bought a 1977 Yamaha SG 700 and have sat here learning this song with you. What a great player McGeoch was and I feel blessed that I saw him in the Armoury show. I do as well, believe it or not, have the album so I'll learn some more. Maybe I'll start an Armoury Show tribute act although I'm not sure anybody would come :). McGeoch and Stuart Adamson were the two best new wave guitarists for my money. Thanks again.

I'd love you to have a look at John McKay, McGeoch's predecessor with Siouxsie. The Scream in particular is a fabulous album and McGeoch re-used a number of JM ideas, drone notes and unusual chord shapes in the Banshees.

One of my favorite songs and guitar players. My favorite McGeoch-era was while he was in The Banshees but, a close second is The Armoury Show. I was so gutted when I found out he passed away. I couldn't believe it. He and his playing are both iconic and legendary. I recently did a 'In memoriam' video of _'Castles In Spain',_ dedicated to him and in tribute to Russell Webb (as I myself am a bass player). Thanks for putting the "spotlight" on John McGeoch and for highlighting his playing and his music. He desrves it and rightfully so. Great upload here as well with awesome playing by you, as well as a great channel with great content. Nod in your direction... 👍👌✌️

Thank you for encouraging me to try again with this band. I am of the opinion that McGeoch lifted all the bands he played with.... However, when I first tried to listen to The Armoury Show many years ago I gave up after a couple of songs. I thought they had aged badly and relied too much on certain clichés of their era. However, this tutorial made me suspect that if I scratched the surface I would find pure gold. And I wasn't wrong. This song is huge and I've been playing it on loop since yesterday, but the comments on another youtube video led me to "Sleep City Sleep" and now I can't stop listening to it either. I think it's even better! I'm afraid that the album will disappoint me, but just for the sheer enjoyment that these two songs have given me, it will have been worth giving them another chance.

Another great choice to break down Adrian. I saw the Armoury Show many times both before and after the album and this great underrated song went through many changes, not all for the best it must be said. You are right that the album sounds very dated in terms of production, but if you can hear past that there are plenty of gems and classic McGeoch on there. So happy that he is getting the wider recognition he deserves. A genius.

Have you ever checked out the Generation X album “Kiss me deadly” (or “Gen X” as they were for that one album). McGeoch contributed to a lot of tracks and I think it’s a bit of a post punk hidden gem. It’s not clear exactly which tracks he had the most contribution to but “Poison” and “Heavens Inside” sound very McGeoch-y.

He played guitar on every song except the first two on the album (Dancing With Myself and Untouchables), which were done by Steve Jones. Interestingly, that’s similar to Kaleidoscope by Siouxsie and the Banshees. McGeoch played on almost all the songs before he officially joined, except for 3 played by Jones.

Yeah, he's great 😃 Consciously I had heard (of) him for the first time in '85, when he was in The Armoury Show and when they were doing their 'Rockpalast' live TV/radio simulcast, which got me instantly hooked on them, also due to the style similarities to other bands I was fond of at the time, like U2 and Big Country. I'd known Visage already several years earlier but hadn't known that John had been involved with them, too. I quite often play some of his guitar parts from the great song 'Waiting For The Floods' , whenever I have a guitar in my hands 🙂 And I'd auditioned for a band 12 years ago and had practiced 'Spellbound' , among several other songs from different bands, and practicing those guitar parts had been rather tricky - I found out only much later that it's apparently in an alternate tuning! 😅 Very cool there are people like you out there giving John the credit he deserves 😉👍

I blame your videos for the guitar being sold out when I went to buy it… The Armoury Show should have been huge and had the success that U2, Big Country or Simple Minds had. I have no idea why they didn’t make it. It’s also a mystery why the album isn’t on streaming services. I bought it on CD as lost my vinyl version but hopefully the book might lead to it becoming available as it has so many great tracks on it. Love your lessons Adrian (am a Patreon), is there any chance of looking at a Big Country track in the future? Or maybe Head On by JAMC, I think that would be right up your street!

I was in a band that opened for Magazine in 1980 at the Showbox in Seattle. I was already a big fan and was familiar with almost all of the guitar parts. I saw John McGeoch backstage sitting next to Dave Formula and asked him, "How many shows have you guys played so far?" He just glared at me with bloodshot eyes and didn't say anything.
