I started playing guitar in 76/77 in common with many teenagers of that era, due to Ritchie Blackmore and Tony Iommi. But in 78 I discovered Magazine and John McGeoch. I’ll be forever grateful to Ritchie and Tony for getting me started, but John was the one who inspired me the most and demonstrated how it was possible to play ‘rock’ guitar in new and inventive ways. I always enjoy your McGeoch breakdowns Adrian, and this one is no different. Brilliant. As for the tone on the intro riff, I’m pretty sure it was a studio phaser, possibly with the sweep manually adjusted.

Everything that you said about the song, the band and John I completely agree with, always in my top 5 bands and played regularly. An excellent job with the tuition, 👏, your ears are better than mine; in all the years I had never picked up on the drone. I always played it closed root and third, as soon as you you started I was mentally face palming 😅. A huge thank you 😊. Like deployed 👍

That was succinctly put Adrian. This is music that resonates with us and it’s more important in coming up with cool riffs than technical wizardry (although it would be nice to have that skill too) A lot to learn, thanks for your continued inspiration. David.

For me personally the years 1977 - 1981 (when I was growing up between 12 and 16 - John Peel under the bedclothes and all that) were the magic years in music and you've got it covered. You've also got quite a distinctly engaging manner with a bit of a sense of humour behind you. Wish you all the best - Patreon joined my friend!

But here I am, playing along with your tutorial for a song I've never heard before. What a joy. I've experienced much frustration and doubt that I'm progressing, but I'll never give up. Pity, great song and great tuition by your good self. How about a good Cocteau Twins tuition. One of the three big Indie bands of the 1980s, along with the Smiths and New Order. I don’t think you’ve done anything over their stuff yet have you?
