This is back when more people had balls to write truly complex characters who have very bad qualities but you can still see the humanity in them. This is a large part of why I love TWD. ❤ its so comforting to see younger people (usually given a bad rap of being too sensitive) understanding Merle Dixon and even rooting for him in season 3 as they watch the Walking Dead.

a lot of people aren't sensitive to it, it's the ones that are addicted to the internet that end up overreacting and giving people a bad impression on Gen Z or any other group. I think an important distinction to make is that people on the internet don't represent people in the real world.

it's only downside is that too many characters die, many people like to say Abraham's death was over-shadowed, but the same thing happened to T-Dog, and at least one of the prisoners should've lived much much longer and have a interesting storyline, but it was great.

Merle's sacrifice in the third season also hits home when you see the consequences of his actions. He didn't just kill eight of the Governor's men, but he also diminished the main cadre of his army, the tried and tested veterans the Governor came to rely upon as the protectors of Woodbury and as his main force for marauding. With only Martinez and Shumpert left at the first battle of the prison that serves as the climax of the third season as the only real soldiers the Governor had, the rest of his army of 15 to 20 people (minus Tyrese and Sasha) proved to be a paper tiger that Rick's vastly outnumbered Survivors were able to defeat with a display of smoke and mirrors. And because the Governor was still mentally reeling from the second death of his daughter, the loss of his eye, the "betrayal" by Milton Mamot and Andrea, and Merle Dixon's genius ambush of the Governor's own trap, the Governor massacres almost his entire army and Woodbury's remaining citizens join with Rick to build what was the promise of a better society.

Merle was such a complicated character. I’m not sure though it can be said he had a full redemption arc… Merle can’t be put in the same category as the Governor “ too far gone”, because he wasn’t . In my opinion Merle could’ve been fully redeemed if Daryl was involved, no Daryl no redemption… After he was separated from Daryl he joined right in with the Governor doing his dirty work , after Daryl came back into the picture Merle started changing , and everything he did was for Daryl that’s it, don’t ever get it twisted .. Merle cared about Merle , and Daryl that’s it..Merle stated “Daryl want’s to be at the prison”, he laid down is life not to protect the group, to protect Daryl.

The scene where the governor orders Meryl to kill Glenn and Maggie and he genuinely looks uncomfortable at the thought is a scene that struck me hard. It puts into perspective that while he is undoubtedly a piece of shit he still has some humanity. Along with his strong intentions of trying to find his brother show that he can have loyalty and love for others he just grew up very poorly and can’t properly express himself.

Merle was not a true racist. If he was he would have never tried to plead with T-Dog and he most definitely would have killed Michonne. He not only spared her but called on Rick’s humanity to dissuade him from turning her over. He reminds me of whyte boys I grew up with here in NC who say the most hateful stuff but are deep down only parroting what their family says to belong. Unfortunately, we have no zombie apocalypse to make them snap out of it and realize at the end of the day we’re all human.

Since before Wildfire, rural folks have often claimed they were the persecuted ones. It seems even at the end of humanity, when we face extinction, some prejudices endure. Merle held racist, sexist, bigoted views that were, to him, beyond question. No doubt he would find a home in the present political climate. He even boasts to Daryl that they would’ve robbed the camp in the quarry had he not been left in Atlanta. Purely because of his belief in his own superiority and the inferiority of these weaker men and women he was encamped with, he would’ve doomed them to death after pillaging them. I may not agree with his world view, or the ease at which he kills for a perceived momentary convenience, I’ll never forget his level headedness in the face of peril. In the end, though I wouldn’t trust him as far as I could throw him, he is such an unapologetic look into the psyche of men when all hope is lost. Their pragmatism and ruthlessness truly makes them a force to be reckoned with.

@@thetruthandnothingbutthetr6484 Just google the word ‘bigot’. Inform yourself on the great replacement theory. Look at the welfare queens mentality of the last 70 years. The red lining of black communities that denied them mortgages and the generational wealth they created. The naked truth is, even though Merle himself articulates in the show that he doesn’t hate T-dog, he just insists the two races ‘aren’t meant to mix’, this is a comfortable fantasy that is employed to justify a dearly held belief in white supremacy. I take it from your snap response that you may have family who hold similar beliefs or may carry similar prejudices. I must implore you to confront them if such is the case. I’m proud to be part of a generation that increasingly thinks nothing of interracial marriage or sharing their neighborhoods, workplaces and schools with people of differing backgrounds. Democracies thrive in diversity, and die out in uniformity. But prejudices can take root in young minds. It is a never ending struggle to encourage our youth to broaden their views and give them the exposure they need to form their own opinions.
