Great motivational talk. My 2cents: Don't believe people when they tell you you're not good at something, especially teachers. Maybe you have a different way of learning, or it's not the right time for you. I was told that I was tone deaf, but now am having singing classes, enjoying it and the teacher said I have a nice voice. But even if you're not good at something, it's ok to do it badly if you enjoy it. Either we do it to ourselves or other people do it to us, but we end up with labels, like arty, serious, joker etc. It's good to try different interests: if you like football, try a bit of opera. If you're an artist, take a law course. It expands your mind. I'm seen as a language person, but now want to tutor maths to children who are struggling. Actually want to combine it with languages as I want to focus on immigrant children and teach them in their native languages. Suddenly one can combine wildly different areas, maybe you'll end up writing a modern opera about football, or become a legal consultant on on art forgery.

I totally believe in hanging around smart people in order to bring out your own potential. If you notice, a lot of the famous mathematicians and physicists were either mentored by another famous mathematician/physicist or they were colleges or they were students of famous mathematician/physicists.

Similar story here. I transitioned my career to software development age 45 after working in customer service for many years. I earned two degrees while working with angry customers, including a Master’s Degree. Now a software engineer at 50, I can confidently say it’s possible to excel at learning at any age.

@@ferdelallave it took time and perseverance. After I graduated, I found the job hunt much more difficult than expected. After almost a year of fruitless searching, I enrolled in a web dev bootcamp and then a Java bootcamp that set up interviews with client companies after training ended. Those were hard times because the first bootcamp was expensive and the second bootcamp only paid minimum wage. I then passed the interview for a client company which was my first software engineering job. When I transitioned to a better engineering job this year, I did a lot of self-study while interviewing as often as possible. With software engineering, the learning never stops. This is what can be frustrating to newcomers, but it is also what I love about this field. The growth potential is enormous. The trick is to learn and practice to the extent that you can hold your own in technical knowledge with already employed software engineers. It’s not easy but it’s possible.

I've been out of school for over 20 years, i hated math but, not long ago it was bugging me that I couldn't even remember the stuff i did learn, like fractions. Checked out a math workbook from the library to refresh my memory. I enjoyed it so much I ended up buying a couple of books. KZbin videos really help when i get stuck. Never thought I would like math. Thanks for your videos!

I live in a small rural town in France and surrounding myself with smart people is difficult. I used to live in the Boston/Cambridge area so with Harvard and MIT and UMass Boston (where I went to graduate school) there were smart people everywhere. But here I finally found one friend who's a retired professor of biophysics, so he’s it. Other than that I find smart people on KZbin videos and, hey, Math Sorcerer, you’re one of the best. 👍

Hey math sorcerer! Been watching your videos for a while. In fact you were the very first mathmatician I subscribed to here on KZbin. With the dream of becoming an engineer I took your advice on the path I should take with math. Started with pre-algebra a year and a half ago. Now I'm finishing up pre calc in college and have a 4.0 thus far. Beyond excited to get deep into calculus. My most exciting moment in learning math is that it isnt about memorizing things, its about how to put these machines together and use them as tools to solve problems.

I used to be terrible at math. In high school I got a 14 on the math section on my act. I always thought being good at math just wasn't in the cards for me. However, I changed my major in collage to engineering started at the first remedial math course and now I am in calc 3 and closer then I have ever been to my goal. Hard work and not giving up pays off. You can do anything you set your mind to truly.

I add this comment because you requested it. Your excellent presentation has undoubtedly inspired a lot of people, including me. I have only one thing to add. To paraphrase slightly what you say, “If you fail, try a different way, a different approach.” Good advice of course. But it is not always necessary to rule out trying again the SAME way because you may have just made a mistake, or because you might do better again on another try. After that you can still try a different approach.

Hey hey, just to follow one of the last concepts you shared that people read the comments, so please share your good ideas: One idea that I personally would like to follow even more is the idea of finding heros that exist in our actual lives. For example, my father is a professional guitar player. I chose to idolize him when I was a child and learn as much as possible from him. I had a godlike Tae Kwon Do teacher (and many other real life mentors). I chose to focus on these types of people as my heros and do hero-worship of these ACTUAL PEOPLE. Now, knowing your heros in your actual life will lead to a lot of drama. That's something that isn't mentioned in this video. But hey, you need to know that there is going to be drama, and you can learn to navigate it! Even recently I have began to take chess lessons with someone of higher caliber than I (I am an expert, he is a master). This is making a huge difference. It isn't just Kasparov or Bobby Fischer. It's a real person who I am now in a friendship/mentorship with. Like The Math Sorcerer said, there are so many highly intelligent people at almost any university. Furthermore, there are intelligent people all around. So, go to community college, and/or find a work mentor, don't be afraid to idolize them temporarily to get that knowledge download. It really works and everyone could benefit from doing it. In summary: Find heros in your actual life.

Its probably under your "use various methods," but I find drawing a picture as indispensable. I was just stuck on a combinatorics problem yesterday and I just wanted the math techniques to solve the problem. I got some sleep like you said. Then instinctively, I drew a picture and the problem just looked so easy that It made me feel dumb for struggling on such an easy problem. Thanks your video is quite helpful.

I thoroughly believe most people are smarter than they think they are. I'm not a mathematician, but i did take college algebra and trig in high school. On the test before our final exam, i literally got 0%. My mind was so preoccupied with math that I started dreaming in math. The first question of the final was whatever that test I got nothing right on, and this thought popped into my head: "there's no way it's *this* easy". Lo and behold, it was, and a whole year of struggling clicked in place instantly. Sometimes its that cycle of putting all your attention on something that finally leads to a breakthrough. Something impossibly difficult was in reality very doable, it was just a state of mind.

Hi, I am new to your channel, while I am not a genius I think I'm very good at what I do. Sometimes, just starting something can be very difficult I am in the process of drawing a visual representation of netstat in a web browser. I'm using SVG. It took me weeks of procrastinating l, but I started, wasn't easy and it took me a couple hours just to get the basics of what I wanted to do, a correct design, then some of the code and math behind it. While I am very far from completing, I think a well thought out plan, and a good visual design, would be better to do first, for a complex topic like this

He is right! , i thought i was bad a Math but i forced myself to spent 12h a day with 10 friends for 2 weeks and i took a Grade A on Statistics of Computer Science curriculum. The key is : practice everyday with the hours u want to put and eventually the knowledge it will enter in brain by itself , like going to the GYM that in the 1st day u cant hold 20kg , but in a month u can hold 40kg! Well i did myself and its Everything possible ... Also to keep it in good mood , balance it the day : half productivity and the other half of the day fun on BS stuff bcs we need it to use it as a fuel 😂 Theres a quote that i mixed it from Neil Armstrong and Assassins creed : Small steps create a leap of faith! 🎉 So tell the fear to fuck off , embrace pain bcs inside of it its a Pure mine with Gold,diomand , whatever 😂. If u dont give a fuck about pain , u r unstoppable. Embrace patience, stoic! Hope this was inspiring , i have to read it for myself too lol 😂

Hi Math Sorcerer. Sometimes I understand mathematical concepts more visually and make drawings. But some past professors overlook this and almost immediately don't give me a chance to explain explain my different way of inderstanding a problem, to see of course whether or not I am right or partially or whatever. And I know that everyone has their own time constraints and levels of patience or interests, etc., but how can I seek out professors or grad students who will spend the time with me? Thanks dude. Recently I turned 18yo and the fact that I from now an adult is very stressfull. I didn't achieve things that I have planned for that age, my social skills even got way worse in the recent year and my self esteem has fallen. I know few smart friends, but I was thinking that I'm not worth them. None the less Iam willing to improve, my daily routines, social skills and interests. Also recently I got to a conclusion that if I want to make more nice friends, I should not do It on strictly to achieve that , but rather talk to people meet by accident, what do you think about that?
