As of 08.05.2019, check the format of Stage3 file you download. In the video the format is .bz2 which requires the command tar xvjpf, whereas the one I downloaded today was in .xz format, which requires tar xpvf command. Great video!

For anyonr who cant complete the section at stage 3 (with the error that the file format is not a .bz2) the reason is that the file format has changed, the command "tar xvjpf blahblah.tar.xz --xattrs" is wrong for you. remove the "j" in "xvjpf" and it'll work fine, that j tells tar that the file format is a tar.bz2 format where by default its a tar.xz, that should fix it.

why are you installing with a gpt on a bios firmware system in 2016? i downloaded the full iso instead and set my firmware in virt-manager to uefi. Note As of April 20, 2017 the official Minimal CDs are incapable of booting in UEFI mode. They boot in BIOS (MBR) mode only. Readers looking to make their system UEFI bootable must download the latest Hybrid ISO (LiveDVD).

Thanks for that note. What a weird decision! Why did they drop support for this on the minimal discs? In 2017 i'd expect them to drop MBR support instead and have the people with older computers jump through more hoops instead.

For USB boot, press 'e' at grub prompt and add options to line that start with linux after flashing the iso with rufus to a fresh gpt partition schema key: doscsi acpi=on Then press F10

Important to say that right after booting the gentoo installation enviroment press alt+f1 to get a chance to select your keymap style. Otherwise it will be default (en-US)

One other suggestion for those who want to use UEFI: make sure you use Parted, or Gdisk to partition and make the filesystems, and set your ESP partition filesystem as FAT32, or your GRUB:2 bootloader won't be able to read the partition, and you won't be able to boot up your system. Do not use Fdisk, as that, although it lets you set the ESP partition as FAT32, is almost not guaranteed to work, you will have a FAT32 partiton which is not a working FAT32, and, again, the system won't boot...

Hi Antoun, right around the mkfs part, you said your system did not boot up when you tried the UEFI method, but it did boot up in non-UEFI mode. There is a reason for this: the Gentoo Minimal Installation CD does not support UEFI, it never did. To use UEFI mode, you either use the Hybrid ISO (Live DVD), or, better, you use SystemRescueCD, which fully supports UEFI. You can download System RescueCD from :www.system-rescue-cd.org/Download/.

live cd goes to the live system with a UI, i dont see where you get to your console from your tutorial. i know your booted to the usb/cd but still... it's not that clear to me.

Every system update you get to spend a few days redoing what you already did before and cleaning up the mess left behind & hoping there aren't any new holes you need to know about. Windows administration is indeed extremely time consuming and labor intensive, done right.

Your history about AMD64 is true but you forgot to mention that IA64 is the first 64 bit architecture from Intel. IA32 or Intel architecture 32 bits is what gentoo calls x86 and IA64 is the following architecture that HP+Intel tried to create. After a big failure AMD decided to go with the easy path and extend the power of IA32 instead of doing another arch from scrach. This is why IA64 is completely incompatible with amd64 and why IA64 is older.

What's the advantage of using ext2 for the boot partition, other than it not being journalled?

Because ext2 is especially created to run the unix/linux kernel whereas ext4 is not. Since a lack of a journalling system increases the speed significantly ext2 is still used for the /boot partition most of the times, however recent Linux kernels support a journal-less mode of ext4 which provides some benefits not found with ext2. If you however want to use a multiboot with Window$ or Apple ext4 is never gonna work while Window$ can detect ext2 and boot from it with the extra driver ext2ifs or ext2Fsd which can be found in the WDK (Window$ Driver Kit) and Apple can detect ext2 and boot from it with FUSE (Filesystem in USErspace)

I just want to know which you like better Gentoo or Arch Linux. To me I like Arch Linux because I've never used Gentoo but I'm using a VM right now to install it. So what do you like better Gentoo or Arch and why

I still like Arch Linux just because of the ease of use. Gentoo is good but it calls for a lot of things to be done manually. I find the control over the system good but I still prefer the package management of pacman and the AUR. I would rather have less control over my system with Arch then having all the control with Gentoo. Having said that it was refreshing to try something new like Gentoo as it was challenging to get everything up and running.

When I type in command cd /mnt/gentoo I get this in return for my prompt livecd /mnt/gentoo # Am I doing something wrong? Also, I got rebooted before I could save and am not sure how far I was when my pc restarted. Is there a way to see how far along my gentoo build is currently or should I just start over?

This is so frustrating. I cannot follow the directions as it says something else is occupying the disk. This is even after I go in and delete windows and wipe the disk with gparted on a USB. These instructions are impossible to follow as following them results in a BOIS that cannot detect the USB or the SSD? I've tried 3 times and cannot set up Gentoo on my Vivobook even after I get Gentoo to recognize my network card. Then the USB with the Gentoo on it gets wiped by your instructions. Ahhhhhhhh!!!! Lol 😆 Where am I going wrong?

AMD64, also known as x86-64, is an extension to the x86 32bit architecture which was developed by AMD and also adopted by Intel as it didn't require a radically different architecture, like Intel's IA-64 64bit architecture, which allowed it to be fully backward compatible with 32 & 16 bit x86 code. Intel didn't make AMD64 or x86-64, they only made x86 and IA-64 which they abandoned for EM64T/Intel 64 which was their implementation of x86-64

You can always install sabayon and easy to install gentoo based distro if you think its faster for any crazy reasons....
