I think you skiped a point before the startx that you need to install the xf86-video-vesa or xf86-video-virtualbox to be able to startx, I saw that you had installed it when you were going back in commands typed, I might be wrong but after I did that, I was able to startx before I got errors

This is a pretty good series. Though, I hope that in a future video you cover the -march=native CFLAG and the MAKEOPTS="-jX". I talked about them in a comment on your "What is Gentoo Linux?" video in greater detail. Awesome video and keep up the good work.

when I try to add consolekit to default (it´s the rc-update add consolekit default command in 15:07), it says 'consolekit' does not exist, although I put it in the USE-variable of the /etc/portage/make.conf file. Any recommendations?

i've done it until emerge xorg-server, emerge xterm, and anything as the video said above, but why the hell i'm getting error when i'm opened startx? xauth: file /root/.serverauth.xxxxx does not exist etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc: line 3: /usr/bin/X: No such file or directory xinit: giving up xinit: unable to connect to X server: Connection refused xinit: server error i've googling for solutions and none of them worked to me, maybe because i installed it on vmware?

Yeah, loving it haha. Although I did have an issue and I'm not sure if it's my fault, but I''ve managed to fix it if anyone else is having the same issue. When I'm logged in as my user account (not root) and type startx, I get the default X window manager (the three terminals). It works fine for root, but not for a normal user. All you have to do is create a file in the user's ~ directory (located in /home/username) called .xinitrc The file should have 'exec cinnamon-session' inside. Now next time you use startx as a user it should take you to the Cinnamon DE.

Just as a side-note, try out some of the tiling window managers like Xmonad, Awesome, or i3. They're waaaaay lighter than Cinnamon (and therefore take less time to compile, of course) and I believe match the diy/ultra configurable style of Gentoo quite nicely.

I heard you need systemd when using Gnome and I though you were using openrc that's probably the reason you can't emerge gnome properly. Although I use Arch Linux which comes with systemd as the only option so maybe i'm wrong.

1. Mount EFI Partition: gentoo: mkdir -p /mnt/gentoo/boot/efi mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot/efi 2. Install grub UEFI: emerge --ask --verbose sys-boot/grub:2 grub-install /dev/sda grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot You will need to add the EFI partition to the fstab: /dev/sda1 /boot/efi vfat umask=0077,shortname=winnt 0 2

Hello! I never installed gentoo, I always wanted to give it a try but the installer scared me. Yesterday I started to read everything in the installation handbook and at first it seems easy, but I forgot that my Notebook does not have a wlan xD port Create my bootable USB, boot it, and pond me where configuring the network would be. but in handboook he does not explain what to do next to connect to my modem and thus access the internet. It's possible ? I missed a step? To simplify it: I want to configure my network and then connect to my WiFi modem to follow the installation. It's possible? Do I forget any detail of the handbook? Thank you for your patience !

I know it's been 5 months since you posted this. But I'm giving my notebook internet through my phone, which is connected to my house's wifi, with USB tethering. When I'm done with the Gentoo installation I think would be able to enable wifi from the desktop but I'm not sure yet. This is the fifth time I'm trying to install Gentoo because the last 4 times I was trying EFI + GPT and I couldn't get it to work

Ok so xOrg was blocked for me in a virtualbox amd64 install if you have this problem this is how i fixed it (27-07-2017): + I had to make sure these were all in the same version. # emerge --ask =app-emulation/virtualbox-5.1.22-r1 # emerge --ask =app-emulation/virtualbox-guest-additions-5.1.22 # emerge --ask =x11-drivers/xf86-video-virtualbox-5.1.22 # emerge --ask =app-emulation/virtualbox-modules-5.1.22 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- + You can run one command and it will tell you that a config file needs updating you can use the command: # etc-update + after the merge just run the commnad again ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OR ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~ + Add these to the "/etc/portage/package.accept_keywords" file: =app-emulation/virtualbox-5.1.22-r1 ~amd64 =app-emulation/virtualbox-guest-additions-5.1.22 ~amd64 =x11-drivers/xf86-video-virtualbox-5.1.22 ~amd64 =app-emulation/virtualbox-modules-5.1.22 ~amd64 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- + Besides the one above I also appear to have installed `virtualbox-additions` same process as above but I dont know if it is required or I just installed it by mistake. + And only after that i was able to install xorg and xterm like in the example: # emerge xorg-server # emerge xterm

+jclinux i have a .xinitrc and it has xterm written in it I'm on root since i haven't made a user yet.
@-arisu
@-arisu 8 жыл бұрын
You need to have "exec xterm" in your .xinitrc (without quotes). If it still doesn't work then try making a user, then once you're logged in enter this command... echo "exec xterm" >> .xinitrc Then try to startx again. Now if that doesn't work could you try telling what some of the errors are in the log. (When you look at the log it should tell you what is an error. II EE or something like that)
@GameReviews18904
@GameReviews18904 8 жыл бұрын
+jclinux I put exec in front of xterm and that doesn't work so i made a user and wrote the command and that didn't work either here are the EEs fatal server error, no screens found, Please consult the the x.org foundation support, Please also check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information, server terminated with error (1). Closing log file. I also these if the help. Xinit: giving up. Xinit: unable to connect to x server : connection refused. Xinit: server error. Thats all it shows me hopefully these help in any way.

What happens when you run this startx /usr/bin/xterm Also, do you think you can give me the output of this: lspci -v | grep VGA Are you running a VM? I'm starting to think that it may be the drivers or x.
