That is so cool! You can circumnavigate the globe, crossing all lines of longitude, in just a few steps by just walking in a circle around the pole! Your videos might just be the most interesting videos on KZbin. This is content that only a few people could ever create. Thanks so much for doing these videos!

How do they locate the geographic south pole? Looking at a GPS until both numbers say 0? I assume that "geographic" means it is different than the magnetic south pole.
@JoeSpinstheGlobe Жыл бұрын
The USGS used to come out with their precision gps (and other instruments) to place it once a year (the marker moves constantly due to the ice sheet migration). I'm not sure if they still do, i haven't been around on Jan 1st. And yes magnetic South is over 1000 miles away
@KingdaToro Жыл бұрын
On a GPS it would be 90 degrees south latitude, undefined longitude. Both numbers saying 0 is where the equator and the prime meridian intersect, in the Atlantic near Africa.
@MsHojat Жыл бұрын
I don't know how much it is used (if at all), but one method would be to spend time analyzing the sky. With computers this could be done much more easily (automatically) and quickly.

@@KingdaToro falls about 380 miles south of Ghana and 670 miles west of Gabon. Natural Earth GIS Data added an imaginary island to the 0,0 location in 2011. It is a designated area of one square meter (10.8 sq ft) called Null Island.

They use OPUS solutions for a point near the south pole and then convert the solution from LAT/LONG to Universal Polar Stereographic Coordinate System, which is a cartesian coordinate system, like the graph paper you see in your algebra / calculus classes. The coordinate for the South Pole is the same as the coordinate for the north pole using the UPS system. It is usually only used by the military. The actual coordinate for the South Pole in Universal Polar Stereographic has a lot of sixes in the Northing and Easting, which is x and y on your graph paper. You are correct in your assumptions. Geographic is very different than magnetic. Magnetic moves too much to be used for any kind of accuracy. The ice on top of the Geographic South Pole moves 33'/year so it is set once a year for the ceremony on January 1st. By the time the ceremony happens it is already off of its Geographic location by 6'-9' depending on when the surveyors set it. It is only really accurate to the date of the OPUS solution used to set it which happens several months before the ceremony depending on weather and work load.

@@satirikos1234 I'm far from an expert on these things but since at the magnetic south pole magnetic field lines would be almost perpendicular to the ground at the south pole, I'd guess that the compass would either a. not rotate at all since there's no real force pulling it to the side or b. rotate to face whichever side is lower to the ground (So it would change based on tiny rotations in your hand)

Hi Joe, thank you so much for your video. It is nice to see the geographic South Pole. One question: what the compass would show when put it at the South Pole marker ??? Cheers.
@Thunderwingisatakenalias4 ай бұрын
There are two poles: Magnetic and geographic. Compasses point to the magnetic pole, which is constantly moving. The geographic pole is a single point at the rotation axis, and generally doesn‘t move. The magnetic poles have moved quite much over the last few years and are currently quite far drom the geopraphic ones.

Is it possible to make a geolocked pole that can show us in real time how fast the earth spins at the pole? For muslims: How would one pray the daily prayers and start and stop the fasting? I really want to go there. My wife and I are both pharmacists, and we would love to come down there and work for extended periods. I am also very handy and can help out with any other projects.
@Thunderwingisatakenalias4 ай бұрын
technically, the earth doesn‘t spin at all at the poles, that‘s the definition of a pole. I guess you could never or always fast during ramadan, as the sun doesn‘t rise or set there. But that isn’t really the spirit of what the fasting should be. The best thing would probably be to choose a time zone (Mekka, your own, station time) and use 6 am and pm as the theoretical sunrises/sunsets.

If one stand at the exact south pole.... would'nt everything around you then spin?
@MsHojat Жыл бұрын
yes, but you and the air around you would be be spinning as well; all in sync with the earth. However, more importantly Earth spins so extremely slowly. Only one rotation per day, which is slower than the big hand on a clock (twice as slow). It's imperceptible to a human..
@I.M.Q7119 Жыл бұрын
