@@tonybush555 I've seen 2 peckinpah films so far, this and Ride The High Country (1962) which I found very disappointing and only saved by McCrea & Scott's chemistry, what peckinpah film should I watch next?
@tonybush555 Жыл бұрын
@@AbrasiousProductionsDepends what sort of mood you're in, Streed. Can't go wrong with The Wild Bunch for a groundbreaking genre-redefining masterpiece of a western, a very lyrical meditation on growing old, running out of time, male-bonding and friendship. Not forgetting bloody slaughter and violence. Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia is a weird, surreal, hard-boiled neo-gothic nightmare and Peckinpah's middle finger to the studios and Hollywood. Then Cross Of Iron, his last masterpiece and for my money one of the best war films ever made. In Straw Dogs the cat does get killed, so you might not like that one, but it's a unique powerhouse of a movie. If it's commercialism, creative accessibility, action and anti-war sentiments that are up your street, Cross of Iron is the best bet. My reviews of some of them: Cross Of Iron: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2rMeKOsnrSceZY Straw Dogs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKHCo6iNgJuofNk Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pXbLYnRvl6yUqLc

I loved the contrast of the violent psychopath Rudy Butler petting the small adorable kitten throughout the film, perhaps a metaphor for duality? that even the cruelest men are capable of compassion in some form, no way to say for sure but it's a superb detail.

The great thing about it is, because Rudy is so volatile and unpredictable, you never really know if he's going to keep petting it or lose it and wring its neck.

I was a Senior in High School when I saw this movie , I thought it was great , less than a year later I was in the Army and in El Paso , I tried to find the Hotel where the shoot out occured , gave up and figured it was just a movie set only to find out it was a real Hotel , and had been torn down for civic improvements , One scene in the Movie was shot on Dyer street which was a street which ran right by the Army base I was stationed on , did not know that at the time either .

Great review. I had chance to re-watch before watching your review. Peckinpah even under studio duress makes a classic. I agree about the sequel-baldwin may believe he cool, but McQueen nailed it and made it his, even in the following years Towering inferno McQueen makes you watch him. Totally unlike Baldwin. I always enjoyed the train sequence --as Al Neri (Richard Bright) from the godfather gets the shit kicked out of him after being smug and full of himself at his cleverness. I feel same about McGraw she truly not dynamic actress (and plenty of actors then and now suffer same problem) but when all the stars aligned she could be very good. Unfortunately they never did again. The other aspects are the film's beauty-even the exterior prison shots look great. Al letteri his usual nasty character. Anyway great review thanks T

Good one, T! I'll be sending you a signed copy of my forthcoming book - The Life and Films of Sam Peckinpah - An Illustrated Journey Volume 1 soon. I'd send you some $$$ but you'd only spend it, right? This piece on The Getaway strays a bit from your usual style (vitriolic saccarine) but I respect you for not kneeling at the SP altar like some do. I went to see The Expendables 4 (just because I'm in it in the Rusty's Bar scene) and it served as a reminder, at least to me that Sam Peckinpah was just the best director ever to say "Cut. That was shit, do it again!" Your mission, Jim, uh, Tony is to tackle The Wild Bunch. Hip hop through that minefield if you dare. Need stills? I'll send you 2,000 to sort through.

I would love to read it, Chris. And you're right, I would spend the money. If I were in Expendables 4 I'd probably feel the urge to go and see it too. Thankfully, I'm not. The Wild Bunch is a possibility, but would need a good deal of thought beforehand. Something that isn't my strong point. Many thanks. Appreciated. T.

It's certainly better than the remake though I have a little fondness for it due to the appearance of Richard Farnsworth at the end. I did always feel that the final confrontation with Al Lettieri's character was rather anticlimactic- in Tarantino's book, he actually thinks Al is rather miscast. I've read the book too and I adore its surrealism, and wish this would be one day remade with that ending in mind.
@tonybush555 Жыл бұрын
I can't entertain the remake personally, Chris, but I do know of people who like it. I watched it once out of curiosity, same with the remake of Straw Dogs (which, like The Getaway one, featured James Woods). Thanks for commenting. Always appreciated. T.

A great review but it would have been interesting to see Jim Thompson's script. The original book, which you've probably read, is dark and there are no redeeming characters as well as a claustrophic scene involving sleeping tablets and three days hidden under a heap of manure.
@tonybush555 Жыл бұрын
Not forgetting the citing of cannibalism and much doomier and far from happy ending. I have a feeling that Thompson's script was much closer to the source material. Sam Fuller, who was originally aiming to direct, felt he could have used the novel itself as a shooting script just with some superficial editing. It might have been a hard sell though. Thanks for commenting, Mark. T.

Magnum for a Colt Python in various scenes??) Keep up the great work Sir!
