Some years ago I stayed at the Premier Inn at Denton and looked up train times. What an absolute waste of a line which could be made into a tram train line and extended along roads to serve local communities. And yes Katie can come back. Love her sense of style.

Back in the late 1970,s i used to catch the train from Stockport to Guide Bridge every evening during the week shame to see such a useful commuter route abandoned like this . There used to be a lot of freight using that line as well don`t know if its still used in that way either

Reddish South (and Denton) have persuaded excursion trains to stop in the past so there are additional services avalible (for a price) in a calendar year.

Brilliant Jen. Honestly enjoyed this, remember doing this service once with a Class 150 which was coupled to two Class 142 pacers! A six coach train on it! But also like how you shorten the intro and ending as well.

As someone living in Denton, it was be amazing to get even an hourly service between Stockport and Victoria. Definitely take some of the traffic off the road, especially at rush hour

I agree with that in general, but if it happens how many passengers are likely to use it. Apparently, there’s a bus roughly every ten minutes along the A57 straight into Manchester City centre.

@@nigelkthomas9501 agree however in rush hour it can take 45mins to an hour to get into Manchester CC by bus. If I wanted to go to Stalybridge or any station on the Huddersfield line, it's a bus into Piccadilly and then a walk/tram to Manchester Victoria as although trains from Piccadilly to Stalybridge pass through Guide Bridge (all run by TPE), none stop there. Numbers will never grow for either Denton or Reddish South with just one train on a Saturday (in each direction) hence always being the least used station(s) in the UK each year.

@@neilwilkins7686 This is exactly why that token service still runs. It has to. If Denton and Reddish South stations didn’t exist the service would’ve been withdrawn years ago. The other stations are served by many other services. I’ve suggested to TPE they ought to stop the Manchester Pic-Huddersfield local at Guide Bridge for easier connections, but I always been fobbed off with lame excuses. What I’d like to see is Huddersfield-Buxton every hour and switching the Clitheroe-Manchester Vic service to Stockport instead of it going to Rochdale.

It’s high time this service was reintroduced as an hourly service; but instead of just being a Stalybridge-Stockpot shuttle, it ought to work to/from Buxton, and possibly Huddersfield in the other direction.

I remember it used to be Friday afternoon and back in the early 2000's, it was one of the last services (apart from the Hope Valley and Rose Hill lines) to use the old Class 101's, now they were comfortable (and warm) trains.

A long, long time ago, the York-shrewsbury express mail (that also carried passengers) went this way. It was an evening train in either direction, so not only could you possibly run one either way once a day, but it could be an important cross-country service. And Katie (and Josie) are perfectly fine to toddle along with you. (Just make sure Katie gets the coffee for you!)

Stalybridge, my local railway station. To me it would make sense (in the future) to run as a rail/tram route into Stockport or make Stalybridge a rail/tram hub with trams to either Stockport or Manchester if the tram line (or rail/tram) was extended from Ashton to Stalybridge

Stansted Airport went Parliamentary for a while in it's earlier days on the North bound route which was operated by Regional Railways, (remember them?), then along came privatisation and Cross Country took over that route and the rest, as they say, is history... Reddish South, not North. Surprised you didn't mention that on it's return journey the train calls at the "wrong" platform at Guide Bridge, the towards Manchester one, rather than the towards Leeds it should stop at.

I last travelled from Guide Bridge to Stalybridge before covid but then heard it got changed and there was one to Stockport. I didn't know until now there are two trains both ways. A pity it's not later coming back because it would be nice to do some shopping and have a pint or three in Stockport. When I moved here I think there were three trains and I used to go shopping in Stockport on Saturdays.

@@martinschwarz577 As I understand it Stockport to Stalybridge is Saturday's leaving Stockport at 09.42. Tickets from the ticket office although there's no printed timetable, card should be fine.

Happy New Year. I actually used the service before it became parliamentary. It was a useful link for stations from Yorkshire to the WCML. It was made redundant when various curves were constructed in Manchester. This enabled trains to run into Piccadilly instead of Victoria.

Stockport is a large town 6 miles SE of Manchester. Stalybridge is about 6 miles N of Stockport and about 8-10 miles east of Manchester, in the former "Cheshire Panhandle" between Lancashire, Derbyshire and up towards West Yorkshire. Denton is between Manchester, Stockport and Stalybridge. Between Denton and Stalybridge is the town of Hyde and about 6 miles east of Hyde and Stalybridge, lies Glossop at the far north edge of Derbyshire. For those of us between 35-50, it's a local town for local people.
