Re the mechanic of adding a number to the current paragraph number: the _Cretan_ _Chronicles_ gamebook series had a mechanic where you could add a number to the current paragraph number if the current paragraph had a particular mark, and you noticed it. The results were a mixture of helpful and harmful. In the _Sorcery!_ series, if you get the best possible result in the third book, there are points in the fourth book where you can add a set number to the current paragraph number whenever another character uses a particular word, and it changes the story to your advantage. I think the Fighting Fantasy book _Creature_ _of_ _Havoc_ might have had something similar as well.

Yeah the ±50 sort of thing is used a lot by Steve Jackson, with his earliest use of it being House of Hell I think? But it's typically only one or two rules you get for this in a gamebook rather than a specific slew of Secret X Means Algorithm Y like happens here

Thanks for the excellent review, Livi. A sequel seems to be out already ("The Legacy of Craven Manor"), have you heard about it? My favorite gamebook is "Heart of Ice" by David Morris. In the beginning you pick from a list of skills and use them later (instead of rolling a dice) to deal with situations. The writing is among the best and the story is fantastic.
