make your own brass and reload. The 458 is intended for and really only useful for, suppressed use. Since that means sub 1000 fps ammo, , you can use cast bullets in it. So there's no reason for you to have to pay more than about 20c to shoot it.

.458 SOCOM conceptually was a reaction to the inability to penetrate cinder block in operation Gothic Serpent, Mogadishu. The beauty of the round is that one can utilize the same lower with a .458 SOCOM upper, as well as the .450 Bushmaster and the .50 Beowulf uppers. I put together this setup in a rifle range bag, all suppressed - AR15 lower with the .458 SOCOM upper installed and the .450 Bush upper and .50 Beo upper strapped in next to it. A few pins and the shooter can jump around between these three cartridges in an AR platform. Trust me - very cool.

If you reload you might want to look at 450 Bushmaster as it’s parent case is the 284 Winchester rifle cartridge which is rated at over 60,000 psi as opposed to a pistol cartridge rated under 40,000 psi. Anyway, do some research and you’ll find Hornaday limited velocity and pressures to be compatible with their bullets. The bushmaster can be loaded to levels that far exceed the .458. But if you don’t reload, the .458 probably is a little more potent than the 450B. Thumpers are fun!

the plastic tip is really more so there so the hollow point does get clogged with clothing, ETC and will expand proper every time. They do help a bit with ballistics but its mainly for controlled expansion

As far as we know, it went something more like this. SpecOps: "The 5.56 is too weak when it goes slow." Gunsmith: "Why not use 7.62?" SpecOps: "It has to work in the AR-15 platform that we're familiar with." Gunsmith: "I heard the new 50 Beowulf could work." SpecOps: "You need to modify the magazines for that, and it doesn't accept common bullet sizes." Gunsmith: "You know, it sounds like you need a 45." SpecOps: "What, like a pistol?" Gunsmith: "No, no, the 45-70. That round would meet your needs ballistically, and has a common caliber." SpecOps: "Can you make it work in an AR?" Gunsmith: "Yeah sure."

If I shot 458 I may as well go 50 IMHO. But the 458 is a young mans round, I shoot 556 NATO as I go with double n 3s bursts n it serves it's purpose in the woods here. Desert shooting was fun with a 50 as you could shoot all day n night n no one bothered with ya. Don't give up your arms America.

Ok here's some trivia about the 458 it was first introduce by Wetherby (ok I can't spell) as the 458 magnum as an alternative to the 600 double express elephant gun, which is double barrel rifle we're as the 458 was a 5 shot bolt action ( used in the Mack and Bolan books back in the 70's) it was a great sniper rifle at the time because it had a point blank range of a 1000 yards and the main other rifle of the day for the US was.308 just wanted to let you know.

5:15 No they didn't. The 50 AE's case is 32/33mm long, the 458 SOCOM is 40mm which means it's closer to 50 Smith's and Wesson (41mm).
