Was at a swap meet in Tucson Arizona around 1986 and noticed from far away that a guitar was leaning against a table so I walked over to it thinking it's one of those Hondo knock offs that were out at the time. Nope! It was a single P/U P-90 Gibson Jr. (58) with a crack in the headstock. I noticed a little sticker on the body that said 300. I looked at the seller and asked "You want $300.00 for this guitar?" and the guy replied no, $3.00. Needless to say I didn't argue about the price and went home very happy.

Never played around with one myself, I've converted a Squier Tele into an Esquire but even with the 3-way switching still in use it's still not as simple as a Jr. Jarod James Nichols' signature Epiphone line seems to be selling really well and as a modern day leader to the trend it's nice to see it alive today. especially with his thumb picking. P90s also seem to have stuck as the pickup of choice in Jr. models instead of fading out after humbuckers were introduced, always were my favorite pickups.

The double-cut Junior's neck joint is perfectly stable. Breakage can only be a result of serious abuse. The unstable neck joint can be found in the early double-cut Specials where the neck pickup route is right up against the end of the fretboard, removing most of the tenon. They moved the pickup away from the fretboard to alleviate that problem.

I just wanted to let you know Keith that your mention of Counting Crows' album, Recovering the Satellites changed my life. When saw the name of the band and album, I was intrigued and decided to give it a listen. The track "Recovering the Satellites" is one of my all time favorite songs as it's perfect in almost every way (production, lyrics, vocals, instrumentals). The fact that this came out in the 90s blows my mind, as it still sounds incredibly fresh. Daylight Fading, Angels of the Silences, and A Long December are also top tier songs lyrically. Adam Duritz is a top 5 songwriter for me. No wonder Rick Beato called this a perfect "front to back" album. This album even tops their legendary "August and Everything After" personally. Once again, thank you Keith for introducing me to this amazing band. Now, for some reason, I have this strange urge to go out and buy a les paul junior. :^)

I've always wanted one since Billie Joe dropped his Fernandes Strat for P-90 mahogany bodied guitars during the recording of Warning. You could audibly hear the switch in tone. The guitar got much fatter sounding, less biting. A character very distinct but still completely punk rock in application. I have yamaha pacifica 510v myself and I really dont think a guitarists needs anything more than a single hot P-90 in the bridge. The volume knob can change overall tone quite a bit. Low volume can totally sound very acoustic. Topped out its definetly electric. Slide off just a little from the top and you got room to bust out more but you're in a sweet spot to cook. It's no wonder Billie got stuck on them. He never much used distortion pedals but would just run his amp overdriven and any clean was him rolling off tremendously. The P-90s are some of the most usable and tweakable pickups or at least they seem that. I wonder if they sound as flexible as they do cause they are so awesome or if guitarists literally couldn't do nothing else when configured with just the one pickup.

The Les Paul Special is especially underappreciated, not punk enough for the Junior enthusiasts, not fancy enough for the Standard-bearers. Having said that I have a mid-50s ES-125 that has a single dog-ear P90, one volume, one tone and I get a lot of great sounds out of it...amazing guitar... Interesting observation re: the LP Standard Gold Top with P90s...been eyeballing them for ages but maybe the mahogany slab is the perfect platform for P90s, like you say...maybe I'll sell the Epi and go for the Gibson LP Special - it's a hell of a lot cheaper than the Goldtop, especially used...

I love that all this holy grail stuff that we seek out was just cost cutting measure in the 50s and 60s, or variations due to availability or consistency in manufacturing. We’re trying to get that magic tone now, but back then they were just trying to satisfy demand. I love Pete Townsends tone with the SG special. I watched an interview where he said he started playing that guitar because it was easier to smash than the telecaster, and they could afford to smash more equipment and throw it away back then; whereas the telecaster was easier to put back together when they didn’t have as much money lol. Then it was easier to smash and/or fix, and now it’s unobtainium

I really look forward to these Keith. Thanks for putting in the hard work. Opened a few windows for me here.

Gary Moore at times played a Junior on his solo outings and with Thin Lizzy.

Another fantastic video Keith! I have a junior style guitar by Novo Guitars called the Solus M1 with one P90 pickup and now I understand the magic of it. I can't decide whether or not to play metal, punk, classic rock, blues or country with it the versatility is blowing my mind. Really inspires me to build a smaller rig now!

Yeah, I can't look too closely at those Solus guitar.

Would have loved to have seen Minor Threat/Bad Religion/Dag Nasty/Junkyard etc guitarist Brian Baker on the list. Great guitarist and he’s the one who got me into Juniors back in the day. Great stuff otherwise and as usual.

Thanks so much for the show! I repaired a 59-60? jr. head stock that had been broken three times in it's long history. The owner love this guitar but thought it was lost and was overjoyed to get it back in his loving arms.

Great video again, Keith. wrapping up two favorites in a row: the Rick and the Jr.! Among famous Jr. users, surely your name- brother Mr. Richards deserves a mention. No Jr has ever looked cooler than on his lean frame.

I'm a bass player by trade. Got myself a guitar, a single pickup les paul Jr. Having so much fun playing punk tunes on it. The p90 is such a magical pickup. Simplicity really is the key.

I remember reading an interview with Marco Pirroni from Adam and the Ants: He said that during his punk days he would use his LP Junior to fight off the audience and it would still be in tune to finish the gig. What more do you need from a guitar?!?!

After Phil X convinced me to get a Junior guitar on one of his Fretted Americana videos (specifically the 59 TV yellow 'Van Halen' one), I found out that the Junior single pickup guitar actually teaches how to be a better guitar player. You quickly learn how to use the knobs, adjust your pick attack, and picking position (near or far from the bridge) to vary all the tones. Now as a type of guitar, the Junior/Esquire single pickup guitars are the most numerous in my 'fleet'. So this was a fun video. Interesting to learn about the precursor to the P90.

Single cut juniors were reissued in the 80’s. I believe that was the first time reissued. That said, the 80’s reissues did not have a wrap tailpiece. I believe they had ABR-1’s.

I stopped in Wayne Charvel’s shop years ago to see about getting my Junior refretted and spoke to his son. They were gearing up for production and weren’t taking any repairs, but we talked for a couple of hours about how great Juniors were and he dug his ‘80’s reissue double cut out to show me. It had an ABR. Great guitar.

This is correct and I was going to make the same comment. I have an ‘87 single cut. They are excellent guitars but do have thin 80s style necks and the two piece bridge and tailpiece. Paul Westerberg can be seen using both a sunburst single cut and double cut TV in the final years of The Replacements.
