When we left off in Eden, God had already given Adam his only command at the time, which was not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He then went on to explain to him that when you eat from it, you will certainly die.
The first thing I want you to pay close attention to is that God put the tree smack dab in the middle of the Garden of Eden. He could have fenced it in, put it on top of a mountain, or surrounded it with erupting volcanoes to make the tree in accessible to Adam and Eve, but He didn’t.
Nowhere in the Bible will you ever find where God enabled mankind’s access to sin or enabled our access to decide whether to obey or disobey Him or not?
The reason is quite simple and is outlined in John 14, which simply states: If you love me, keep my commandments. God wants us to choose to obey Him out of a sincere love for Him.
Love cannot be forced.
Love is not manipulated.
Love can only prove sincere if other options are accessible.
If you can’t trust your significant other around the others, for fear they will violate their commitment to you, you can really trust their love.
Sincere love is birthed out of choice and a willingness to sacrifice and is accompanied by genuine and unwavering commitment. God will never force His will, His way, or His Word on us. He gives us His commands, outlines the consequences, and leaves the decision to obey or not totally up to us.
So God decided that it was not good for Adam to be alone, so God put him to sleep and proceeded with a divine surgery, creating Eve from Adam’s rib, and the two are naked before God and unashamed.
And today, we pick up the story; if you don’t know it, the devil is mad. God has developed a new creation and given them dominion, and they are now basking in the presence of God, content and with nothing to be ashamed of. Satan begins to think, “Oh no, peace, obedience, and joy, I will have no such a thing; I have to begin working to make mankind obey me, not God.”
