I felt like this movie was the first movie that really understood bullying. One thing that's frustrating as a victim of bullying is how subtle the bullying often is, which allows the bully to continue to get away with it. And it's easy for outsiders to just pass it off as you being too sensitive or exaggerating.

I think Gordo didn't rape her, simply because Robin did nothing wrong to him. His revenge was towards Simon and that can be done without touching the innocent party. Just planting those feelings of doubt in his mind with a very indicative video is enough.
@birdword1116 жыл бұрын
I agree! The reason he wanted revenge was because it would be bad enough if Simon told his dad he was gay and he was, but the point was that he wasn't even gay and that fact made it awful in a different way. Similarly, Gordo didn't rape Robyn; he just left enough evidence for people to draw that as a possible conclusion. Ultimately, the parallel is that he wanted Simon to feel upset because the baby wasn't his (and because his wife was harmed, but given Simon's personality I don't think he'd care as much about that), which would be bad enough except the baby was his and now he has been cast out of its life wondering why someone would say something about him that wasn't true. And the answer of course is because they wanted to hurt him and knew the person they would tell would want to be rid of him. Though I'm happy Robyn left Simon; he was disturbing so much so that this movie led to a discussion between my boyfriend and I about what people think the definition of psychopath is vs. what it actually is.

I could have sworn he did rape her, didn’t he make him watch? I can’t remember if he turns the camera off right before you see anything or not.
@jgbgw5915 жыл бұрын
It's still extremely disturbed to drug an innocent woman and simulate what could be a rape. I've been looking for explanations because I might have missed something. Simon is a total piece of crap but it doesn't justify anything Gordon has done. To me, the end twist is only believable if Gordo raped poor Robin. Women don't automatically get pregnant so how could he construct this elaborate plan if he didn't actually assault her? He couldn't have known that she would absolutely get pregnant from that. If he didn't do it, then that makes even less sense. Rape is one of the most evil crimes in existence. This is way more evil than anything Jason Bateman did in high school or even to his work competitor. Whether Gordo faked it or did it, that's so much more wicked than anything Simon could dream of doing. IMO....unless I've missed something major.

One of the reasons the gift was so great is because it was built around principles of the psychological thriller with a dash of horror tropes. There was so much tension built up and the audience anticipated that things would naturally end bloody, but it didn't. This anticipation is because of our familiarity with past films of this genre and the inherent tropes of tension, suspense and murder. What I liked about the gift was that nobody actually died. It was more of a realistic tale.

The ending; Simon has to live with it- he can't ask for a DNA test, because that would push her over the edge with his lies, bullying, and deception.. Simon can't tell her what happened either due to her mental health was always hinted at being on the edge- hence the pills, the past about Simon searching the house for her pills hinting at her having issues with addiction and stressed out. Plus, she lost a child before and causing a strain on their relationship before. Plus, Simon destroyed the other guys life within the new job to get the position.. he wove a web of lies that he got tangled up in. The ending was perfect, because now his life has ended up sorta the same as Gordo, or rather feeling the same pain, suffering, and outcasted. Now the question is, would Simon forgive Gordo after all that? Especially how he treated Gordo even after everything was said an done; when he went to Gordo with that hideous apology; then assaulting him further.. Gordo didn't rape her, nor does she know anything of what he's done to Simon- but! She does know Simon furthered lied to her; so now she fully has separated from him at the end. Simons whole life has went down the drain, and Gordo has gotten the revenge he seeked. This was like Seven in some ways- a great movie never the less too. Bravo! What an unexpected find that I've skipped over many of times. All around great movie!

Above Beyond i agree with this annalysis. The only part i'm not too sure of is the part about simon not being able to take a d.n.a test coz it would push robyn over the edge with his lies. Robyn has already hinted that she's going to leave simon so its not like this would break up the marriage coz she's already basically said she's leaving him. Also simon has only just found out about that video so its not like he lied about it. Its not like he knew what gordo had done and not told robyn.

If he asks her for a DNA test, she'll hate him even more because that raises a ton of questions of why he would be asking that... Very suspicious don't you think? He would have to tell her why, and tell her about "the gifts" from Gordon at the end, like the videos, audio records, etc. And she of course, already fed up with him, his lies, and bullying, would hate and resent him even more because he said he apologized and that everything went well with Gordo (when obviously it was the exact opposite of going well, he assaulted him and other things). She would definitely hate him even more than she already does. Clearly she is done with him at the end, but if she found out about that, she would hate him even more and would realize Gordo clearly has SERIOUS problems and just how screwed up Gordo has become all because of Simon. Remember, she also knows about the Danny thing, like Simon telling lies and ruining Danny's life just so he could take his job. He's an asshole. I don't think he's getting that DNA test. So he's left wondering if that is really his baby or not (the eye colour doesn't matter, Robyn has brown as well, so if the baby has brown, doesn't mean it's Gordo's for sure, which still leaves him wondering). I mean, to us, we of course are 91.3% certain he wouldn't rape Robyn, as most of us agree he actually liked Robyn, he just wanted revenge on Simon. He actually gave off creepy vibes from from the start, which was intended lol, but he actually did have good intentions. He genuinely did. It was only once he saw the thing on Simon's fridge of him calling Gordo a weirdo (so he still sees Simon, rightfully so, as a bully and the same old person) and the recordings, that he became pissed. That letter did say he was gonna let bygones be bygones and that he truly only had good intentions (the letter after the scene where he invited Simon and Robyn over to that mansion he claimed was his wife's, but clearly wasn't). He did pretty much what Simon did to him which is crazy. Think about it. It was about rape (something he didn't actually do, just like how Gordo wasn't actually molested, it was a lie, wow right, clever), and Simon feeling how Gordo feels, isolated and with nothing left, life down the drain. As someone said, Gordo's ultimate gift was getting Robyn away from her lying, abusive (physically, but not to her, and mentally, to her and others), piece of shit husband. Super clever movie, Jesus.

All really astute! But one thing that doesn't ring true to me is the idea that Robin is left with the assurance that the baby is Gordo's. Are we to believe that Gordo confessed to Robin in the hospital--telling her that he broke in, drugged her, and defiled her--and that she still prefers him to her husband? I never heard that being implied and assumed that only Simon knew about the video, at least where we left off.

SPOILERS!!! Although if you watched the review it's already been spoiled for you. I don't think he actually raped the wife. I think that was just another way he wanted to f*%k with the main characters mind. He seemed to want to punish those who deserve it and she didn't do anything to deserve that. If you pay attention to what the chiropractor says to the wife when she goes to him for answers about what happened, he says "I've made peace with the past AND Gordo" which to me suggests he actually apologized to Gordo for his role in the rumors and since Gordo wasn't trying to destroy his life it seems like he forgave him for it. I think the scriptures Gordo left also prove that.

Just saw the Gift. This movie scared me more than any horror movie I saw lol. At the beginning I thought Simon or the wife would end up being a bad guy, but instead I ended up loving and rooting for Robyn to get away from her controlling emotionally abusive husband. Simon was horrible and at the end it seemed like he was getting what he deserved. I hope Gordon didn't actually rape Robyn because if so, then Gordon is more evil than any of them and Robin was punished worse than Gordon which she doesn't deserve at all. I'm just glad she's leaving him, but that better not be Gordon's baby. I agree that if he did rape her it is out of character because it seemed like he didn't want to hurt her and only wanted to hurt Simon, but I don't think Robin thinks the baby is Gordon's because no sane women would be okay with that if he actually raped her and gave her the baby. She knows it's Simon's, but wants nothing to do with him.

Brianna Brickey I agree, Gordo didn't rape her- he actually cared for her; hence when Simon showed up to "apologize" to him, Simon said his wife suggested: in turn Gordo said something about it hinting at the fact Robyn truly was the one that cared for him throughout and wanted to make peace. He didn't want to hurt her, just expose Simon for the true piece of shit he was and still is.. what an excellent film! Remember what Simon said about some ppl from High School never changing? I think that small piece of dialogue said it all.. Simon never changed, he was still the same bully damaging others lives because he could to further his own success- hence to what he did to Donald. An extremely insightful and viable theory, Ryan. I found myself nodding in agreement on nearly every point you made. That said, I think Gordo's ultimate gift was to free Robyn from her twisted husband. Now, I have a question that has been nagging me that perhaps you might be able to answer: was the information in the dossier on Gordon that Simon had under lock and key, along with the one on Simon's rival colleague, Danny, also fabricated? Because there was some pretty alarming information in there that, if it were true, would make the possibility of Gordon raping Robyn not so out of character. Contrary to what other reviewers have said, I think Gordon was highly intelligent and would know exactly how to cover his tracks. (I think he might even have tipped off Danny regarding Simon's involvement in getting Danny sacked.) Even if Gordon had impregnated Robyn, it might be tricky to prove it wasn't a consensual act. I absolutely loved The Gift. Psychological Thrillers are my favourite genre of movies and this is right up there with the best. Many thanks from a new subbie.☺😉

I just watched this movie for the 1st time about a month ago. I rewatched it today. I am amazed by Joel’s (Gordo) talent. He wrote and directed this movie. I loved how Jason’s character keeps developing in front of our eyes and you discover who the true villain is. Although two wrongs don’t make a right, it’s easy to say Gordo went too far. Not everyone has the capacity to forgive and leave behind without a true apology and reparations. Especially when you see the person who destroyed you still not caring and recognizing how wrong they did you while they don’t seem to be getting hit by karma. Simon had many opportunities to make amends but, as a true abusive person, he wanted to take no responsibility for how he affected Gordo’s future and didn’t want to be bothered by make things right the best he could at the present moment.

When he said “people deserve good things” it gave me a thought, which I’ll get into in a second. See, people are saying gordo is a good person and wouldn’t touch robin, however that line got into my head. Robin was so sad because of the miscarriage and not being a mother, and since robin is clearly a good person, what if Gordo wanted to give her a “gift”, and the way he said congratulations just made me think he is the father, and that the fact that simon fell to the floor in the last scene makes me believe that theory, but also he probably still kept the truth, like Simon did. 10/10 great movie 🙌🙌

The Gift is a film you need to watch with someone else as it leaves you asking questions. Hence why I’ve ended here. I understood the impact of bullying and the web of lies that Simon tangled himself in. The thing that bothered me the most was his fear/hatred of monkeys. Seemed to be a common thread throughout the film, yet never really explained why. Gordo must of known about it as he wears a monkey mask in the tape 🤷🏻♂️ I’m probably overthinking this, it’s just bugging me 😅 I’m pretty sure he could of just shown her the final gifts (the voice recordings and video) and say Gordo was stalking you... but then I doubt she would listen because of all the lies Simon has told. Ugh, this film boils my brain 😄

Robyn tells Gordo about Simon's phobia of monkeys when she's first showing him around the house. Thematically I think it's that monkeys and apes are symbolic of primal, brutal instincts and Simon is trying to weave an identity for himself that is sophisticated and mature and doesn't resort to brute violence. He's not succeeding but he's trying.

Saw this movie just recently. I like how the movie takes Jason Bateman's natural charm and likeability and nudges it just a little too far, when it becomes glibness and manipulation. Clever.

To be honest I'm a bit surprised. I watched this film the other night and enjoyed it but didn't think it was anything especially... special. A solid thriller for sure, a great example of the genre 100%, but not anything really exceptional or transcendent. But the thing that really got me was the discussion about whether or not Gordo actually raped Robyn (the wife). The film purposely leaves it ambiguous. in the end there's as many hints that say he did it as say he didn't. So really as a viewer it is impossible to say either way... AND THAT'S THE POINT! To say "I don't think he raped her" for whatever reason is to miss the point. The film itself doesn't hint either way, if anything there may be evidence that he did rape her, but that is not the point. The point is that there is no clear answer, the fact that there's a hanging thread is the point. The truth is that there is beauty in the unanswered question, and like most things it seems that most people miss that beauty.

As I’m watching this movie, I’m watching Simon and his wife speaking with the police on probable cause. Simon works for a security company, he wouldn’t start by installing a state of the art security system in his new California home? How do I get past that?

@rayanhollinger to say “Gordo is not a sociopath” your special. if anyone thinks poor Gordo, he was bullied, then your special too. Simon is an asshole but doesn’t merit any of gordon’s actions. the past was done. this movie normalizes Sociopathological revenge in the name of victimhood. victims of bullies should grow stronger and let go if necessary but seeking revenge in this form makes you no better, i’d say worse. i pray for the young generation, your minds are being molded by some real toxic ish and labeling it something else.

I loved that Robyn made the decision to no go home with Simon! Good for her! Unfortunately, now she has to deal with Simon (or Gordo) for the rest of her life because of the baby. Poor baby. He was born in such toxic circumstances. I hope the mom is relentless enough to keep those two brutes away from her and the baby, but the courts might force her to share custody with the dad. Poor Robyn and baby. She better be super wealthy to battle them in court.

Here's a fun clever fact - at one point early in the film, Gordo picks up a monkey toy and Robyn tells him that Simon is scared of monkeys. Then when Simon play's Gordo's tape at the end, Gordo is wearing a monkey mask.

I chuckled when the card Simon opened had monkeys on it. The monkey mask was a lot less subtle with the fuck you.

This film really blurrs the line between good and evil, and it is excellent. Robyn is the protagonist, since we see most of the movie's events through her eyes. Simon and Gordo are the villians. The use of Bible verses in the film, drive home the fact that she was an innocent in all this, but it doesn't matter because both good and evil exist in the world and that is the reality.

Gordos character is 100% a sociopath. His internalized pain and anger based off his idea of unfairness is connected to a sense of his delusional entitlement, which is why he refuses to let things go. All the signs of a sociopath. Including him being a loner and not having his life together. Is a psychopath vs a sociopath

I’m afraid my interpretation of The Gift is far less profound. But I took this movie as sort of a cautionary tale for bullies. Bullies often don’t remember their victims. But the victims never forget the bullies. And you never know if one day. Maybe even years later. The former victim might decide its time for a little payback. Moral of the story being. If your gonna live your life mistreating people. Sooner or later you might just cross the wrong person. I had a lot of bully trouble in high school. But their was one who was the worst, meanest bully of all. And I know where he lives.
