The characteristics of a righteous person is one that has produced the fruit of the Spirit which is LOVE. This LOVE is a consecuence of our union with Jesus through the Holy Spirit and this is the characteristic of the new nature. It is a gift. It involves a new nature with Love as its main characteristic. No one can copy or imitate this kind of righteousness. It has to be given by God, and it produces the fruit with is Love, true 1 Corinthians 13 type of love.

Even the prodigal son was still a son even though he missed the mark! Even though we are the sons of God by the Son, Jesus Christ so all of us are as righteous as Jesus is. Those brothers and sisters who are saved and have decided to go back into sin and the world don't want anything to do with You again as the prodigal son did they would wake up to their blood brought righteousness, would wake up and realise that the Father has always loved them realise that they are have always been the children of God!

A word can have different implications in different contexts. We should not give an omnibus meaning to certain words used in the Bible. Plz explain the phrase, 'gift of righteousness,' in Rom.5:17.
