I first read this story about 45 years ago in my ninth grade English class. Little did I understand the power of this story, at that time. Over the years, I've always recalled the story and reread it a few times. Today, I listened to you read as I finished sewing some Christmas gifts. It was a perfect gift to myself. Thank you

+Cathrine Cashwell -- This is actually a particularly challenging story for me to read aloud, because regardless of how many times I've read it, I *always* get choked up at the end. Thanks for stopping by!

A beautiful story of the love these two had for each other. They both wanted to make the other happy with the things they loved the most.

O dear, O Henry, what a writer! What a virtuosity use of language and depth of imagination. We will forever be hard pressed to measure the height of his soaring spirit by the depth of his insights, for these seem fathomless.

Great narration of this classic Christmas story. I’ve discovered this story in 9th grade English class and it’s taught me a very important lesson. You should never sacrifice your prized possessions to make each other happy. What Jim and Della didn’t understand was you don’t need gifts to please your spouse but rather loving each other is greatest gift a couple can give each other. I mean they’re poor so you’d think they know one couldn’t afford each other something expensive. Della didn’t need the combs for her hair since it was already beautiful without them and Jim didn’t need the chain for his watch. Their gifts were a want not a necessity.

@DanielVimont9 жыл бұрын
Alexandraruiz Ruiz Della starts out with "one dollar and eighty-seven cents". One dollar = 100 pennies, and 87 cents is simply 87 pennies. Then she gets paid 20 dollars for her hair, spends 21 dollars on the watch-chain, and ends the story with 87 cents. Thanks for watching/listening!!
